[Elecraft] KPA500 kit with problems

2012-12-21 Thread Ron W3ZV
It appears that I am the problem. Somehow I have messed up a perfectly good
KPA500 kit.

I purchased the cable kit for the KPA500. I have the 15 pin cable connected
from the K3 to the KPA500. The major problem seems to be a lack of two way
communication between the KPA500 and the K3. Making changes on the K3 has no
effect on the KPA500. The KPA500 does not change bands, or show any output on
the meter. Using the band buttons on the KPA500 produces erratic results on the
KPA500 display. Pushing the 20 meter band button changes the display to 15
meters. The 12 meter button changes the display to 6 meters. The strange thing
is that the K3 changes to the band indicated on the KPA500 band button. I
checked the 15 pin cable connections and it looks good.

I spoke to Elecraft support. The suggestion was to open up the amp and check
the ribbon cables. I did this and as far as I can tell, the cables were all
good. Red line to pin 1. All pins covered. Of course this happens on a Friday
night before a holiday weekend.

Anyone want to take a shot a bailing out the guy with ten thumbs?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 kit with problems

2012-12-21 Thread Barry Simpson
Hi Ron

I seem to recall that I had a similar sort of problem when I first
connected my KPA500. I think it was either that I had plugged in the cable
from the K3 into the wrong socket on the back of the KPA500 - there are
two- and/or I had not enabled the KPA500 in the K3 menu.

Perhaps you can recheck those.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Kit Assembly Illustration Clarification

2011-11-04 Thread Roy Morris
The illustration on page 32 of the KPA500 Kit Assembly Manual, Rev D states
a 5/16 (7.9mm) split ring lock washer is placed over two 5/16 (7.9 mm)
fender washers. The illustration either shows TWO 5/16 split lock washers
or the single lock washer is reflected off the fender washer giving the
appearance of two split lock washers. Which is it? Thanks. Roy Morris

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Kit #400 problems -solved --

2011-09-19 Thread DK2GZ

Hello

the problem was the 10pin ribbon cable to the I/O board. It was attached in
the wrong direction on the power supply board and then therefore also on
the I/O board, because the plugs are coded. I did reset the ribbon cable in
the right way and all problems now solved. Bandswitching is also working
perfectly.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Kit #400 problems

2011-09-18 Thread DK2GZ
Hello

just finished the kit #400 but have someproblems:

Fan do run at all:

after 5 minute CQ I got the high temp message. I checked then the fanspeed
levels, nothing happend
Then I did same further investigation.

I checked the U3 on the power supply board. The tab should be isolated
from the srew, I get around 900 to 1200 ohm resitance with the DMM when I put
the leads on the tab and srew.

Next I checked there the fan pluged into the power supply module. Should
als be o.k. I got a 3 PIN connector an the red wire is close to the big black
C(elko). P7 there has no wire connected.

Bandswitching with the K3 do not work on all band:

I have the original AUX cable connected.
If I tap on the K3 or KPA500 the Band-tap the following happen:

K3 KPA500
1.81.8
3.53.5
7.0 7.0

14 1.8
18 3.5
21 7.0
24.924.9
28 28
50 50

If I then send a single dit, then the corresponding band ist on the K3 and
the KPA500

Cannot connect the KPA500 with the utility:

using the same PC and cable as for the K3 and cannot connect the KPA

May I got a defective front panel?

Looks like Elecraft has busted through the early April log jam of initial

ship within 3 weeks. Good news for everyone waiting for a KPA500 kit.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Kit SN# 133

2011-07-05 Thread Mark Stennett
I signed for UPS delivery at 1830 this evening. I built it over the next
3.5 hours, including two unrelated interruptions from XYL N5BW. All
parts were on hand plus a couple of extra washers and screws. My only
issue was that the input RF connection to the amplifier brick was not
completely seated. The symptom was that the KPA power meter did not
respond at all, bypass or engaged. My K3 driver obviously had a load
issue. I pulled the rear panel and reseated it, then it worked as
advertised.

I worked everything I could hear on 20M CW late this evening at 500
watts with ease.

Elecraft, you folks continue to implement impeccable mechanical and
electrical design skills. Thank you once again for another fantastic
product.

I was recently talking about my Elecraft experiences with a fellow
broadcast radio engineer and referred to you folks as the Nautel of
Amateur Radio

[Elecraft] KPA500 kit

2011-06-20 Thread Andrew Faber
Just to whet everyone's appetites further, here's a one week report on my
new KPA500 (ser. 077, almost matches my K3, ser. 076), built as a Field Test
kit.
The assembly was very straightforward, easier than the K3. It was speeded
up by the fact that the parts inventory was missing from the preliminary kit
manual, so no time was spent checking for completeness -- I just kept
building, waiting to see if anything crucial had been omitted (nothing was).
There was a pre-production glitch with a ribbon cable, but that was quickly
remedied by Bob Wolbert, K6XX, the project manager, and the finished kit
works great.
Although this may not bear management's approval, I gave it several hours
of workout in the All Asian contest this weekend, running JA's at a steady
600 watts on my wattmeter. Nary a problem, and the temperature readout
never went above 60 degrees C. (it's rated for 90 degrees C.).
The integration with the K3 is delightful. The amp and radio follow each
other's band changes, and the K3 remembers two power levels, the standby and
operate levels, and switches automatically. The KPA500 also comes on when
you turn on the K3 (provided the main power switch on the back of the amp is
on), so it's just like having a more powerful radio. All in all, operation
is really seamless with the K3. I imagine it would be almost as good with
any other radio, as the amp, when not connected to the K3, switches bands
with the first dit due to rf sampling.
Anyway, I'm one happy camper with the KPA500, and wanted to share my
experience.

comments about an easy assembly from a well written manual. Found a few
typos, but everything went smoothly, and I got a tour of the inside of
the amp. Very nice piece, well built. I took about four hours to do it,
including making notes of the typos. Others might do it a lot faster.
:) Only complaint is that Elecraft STILL doesn't understand the Pin
One problem. The RCA connectors for ALC and PTT float from the chassis.
AARGH.

Buying this as a kit is strongly recommended.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Kit Build

2011-06-02 Thread Ed Muns
I built up a KPA500 kit last night and thought people might want to hear
about it, especially those who are eagerly awaiting their own KPA500 kit.

Although I was told the assembly should take a couple hours, I spent 5.5
hours, going somewhat slowly and taking notes for feedback to Elecraft:

1.5 hours - parts inventory
2 hours - cabinet and power supply assembly
2 hours - RF module, front panel and button up

There were some trivial details to clean up and they are worked out now for
future kit shipments. There are a lot of screws, washers and such! Much
more than I realized having only seen assembled units previously. The
assembly manual is excellent and with every new Elecraft product I am still
stunned at how well everything fits together. Ron anticipates questions
that might arise at various points and heads them off with easily readable
explanations along the way. It was the typical enjoyable and satisfying
Elecraft kit experience with the only regret that it was over so soon.

This is yet another exceptional design and execution of a top-end product by
the company. 500 watts is a very conservative spec. The amp loafs at
this power level and beyond. Instant on, no tuning (that was apparent to
me), totally quiet, seldom any fan movement, exceptional integration with
the K3, same easy firmware updating, etc. Change bands on either the K3 or
the KPA500 and the other follows immediately. The controls are simple and
intuitive, yet provide a rich set of functionality. A very elegant product
that redefines what operating a linear amplifier can be like.

[Elecraft] KPA500 kit versus factory

2011-05-23 Thread John Grimm

I'm hoping that those receiving KPA500 kits this week might post some assembly
observations and thoughts on the assembly of the kit. I'm curious why there's
more of a 'factory assembled versus kit' price premium with the amp versus the
basic K3. Is there anything more complex required with the KPA500 assembly
versus a K3? Any special test equipment or requirements beyond those required
to put together the K3? Thanks all. John / K0YQ

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 kit versus factory

2011-05-23 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
No, other than the need for a 1/2 wrench to tighten the big bolt that holds
the power transformer in place the tools are similar to what you used on the
K3 including a DMM for a few resistance checks.

The KPA500 does not have as many parts as the K3, but it's a carefully
engineered fit so it really only goes together smoothly one way; Following
the assembly instructions will be important if you don't want to waste a lot
of time.

why there's more of a 'factory assembled versus kit' price premium with the
amp versus the basic K3. Is there anything more complex required with the
KPA500 assembly versus a K3? Any special test equipment or requirements
beyond those required to put together the K3? Thanks all. John / K0YQ

[Elecraft] KPA500 kit

2011-04-10 Thread Jeff Kinzli N6GQ
I haven't seen it mentioned, but I'm wondering what the KPA500 kit
plan is? Is it similar to the K3 kit, where it's akin to assembling a
computer, where boards are put into an enclosure, or is it a solder
some parts type kit? I'm assuming the former given the nature of the
kit (having HV and big voltages floating around). I'm sure it's been
mentioned by Elecraft somewhere I just can't seem to find it anywhere.
Have there been any estimates on the number of hours expected to build
the kit and what's involved?

Thanks,

Jeff N6GQ

2011-04-10 Thread Mike Fatchett
I want to say that I read something that the kit would be like the K3
with boards to install.

The KPA500 kit is a no-solder kit similar to the K3.

[Elecraft] KPA500 kit?

2011-02-10 Thread John Harper
By kit does this mean K3-style solderless or old-school K1, K2, KX1 style?

Thanks and 73,

Way less than that for both the kit and build versions. We haven't set
the final price yet, but the kit version should come in about $1995.
