[Elecraft] KPA500 kit with problems
It appears that I am the problem. Somehow I have messed up a perfectly good KPA500 kit. I purchased the cable kit for the KPA500. I have the 15 pin cable connected from the K3 to the KPA500. The major problem seems to be a lack of two way communication between the KPA500 and the K3. Making changes on the K3 has no effect on the KPA500. The KPA500 does not change bands, or show any output on the meter. Using the band buttons on the KPA500 produces erratic results on the KPA500 display. Pushing the 20 meter band button changes the display to 15 meters. The 12 meter button changes the display to 6 meters. The strange thing is that the K3 changes to the band indicated on the KPA500 band button. I checked the 15 pin cable connections and it looks good. I spoke to Elecraft support. The suggestion was to open up the amp and check the ribbon cables. I did this and as far as I can tell, the cables were all good. Red line to pin 1. All pins covered. Of course this happens on a Friday night before a holiday weekend. Anyone want to take a shot a bailing out the guy with ten thumbs? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 kit with problems
Hi Ron I seem to recall that I had a similar sort of problem when I first connected my KPA500. I think it was either that I had plugged in the cable from the K3 into the wrong socket on the back of the KPA500 - there are two- and/or I had not enabled the KPA500 in the K3 menu. Perhaps you can recheck those. 73 Barry VK2BJ On 22 December 2012 02:42, Ron W3ZV w...@verizon.net wrote: It appears that I am the problem. Somehow I have messed up a perfectly good KPA500 kit. The illustration on page 32 of the KPA500 Kit Assembly Manual, Rev D states a 5/16 (7.9mm) split ring lock washer is placed over two 5/16 (7.9 mm) fender washers. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Kit #400 problems -solved --
Hello the problem was the 10pin ribbon cable to the I/O board. It was attached in the wrong direction on the power supply board and then therefore also on the I/O board, because the plugs are coded. I did reset the ribbon cable in the right way and all problems now solved. Bandswitching is also working perfectly. 73 de Harry, DK2GZ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KPA500 Kit SN# 133
I signed for UPS delivery at 1830 this evening. I built it over the next 3.5 hours, including two unrelated interruptions from XYL N5BW. All parts were on hand plus a couple of extra washers and screws. My only issue was that the input RF connection to the amplifier brick was not completely seated. The symptom was that the KPA power meter did not respond at all, bypass or engaged. My K3 driver obviously had a load issue. I pulled the rear panel and reseated it, then it worked as advertised. I worked everything I could hear on 20M CW late this evening at 500 watts with ease. Elecraft, you folks continue to implement impeccable mechanical and electrical design skills. [Elecraft] KPA500 kit
Just to whet everyone's appetites further, here's a one week report on my new KPA500 (ser. 077, almost matches my K3, ser. 076), built as a Field Test kit. The assembly was very straightforward, easier than the K3. It was speeded up by the fact that the parts inventory was missing from the preliminary kit manual, so no time was spent checking for completeness -- I just kept building, waiting to see if anything crucial had been omitted (nothing was). There was a pre-production glitch with a ribbon cable, but that was quickly remedied by Bob Wolbert, K6XX, the project manager, and the finished kit works great. Although this may not bear management's approval, I gave it several hours of workout in the All Asian contest this weekend, running JA's at a steady 600 watts on my wattmeter. Nary a problem, and the temperature readout never went above 60 degrees C. (it's rated for 90 degrees C.). The integration with the K3 is delightful. The amp and radio follow each other's band changes, and the K3 remembers two power levels, the standby and operate levels, and switches automatically. The KPA500 also comes on when you turn on the K3 (provided the main power switch on the back of the amp is on), so it's just like having a more powerful radio. All in all, operation is really seamless with the K3. I imagine it would be almost as good with any other radio, as the amp, when not connected to the K3, switches bands with the first dit due to rf sampling. Anyway, I'm one happy camper with the KPA500, and wanted to share my experience. 73, andy ae6y __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KPA500 Kit Build
I was another beta builder, and I did the deed on Saturday, in between a bunch of honeydoos and a dinner in a restaurant. I can confirm Ed's comments about an easy assembly from a well written manual. Found a few typos, but everything went smoothly, and I got a tour of the inside of the amp. Very nice piece, well built. I took about four hours to do it, including making notes of the typos. Others might do it a lot faster. :) Only complaint is that Elecraft STILL doesn't understand the Pin One problem. The RCA connectors for ALC and PTT float from the chassis. AARGH. Buying this as a kit is strongly recommended. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KPA500 Kit Build
I built up a KPA500 kit last night and thought people might want to hear about it, especially those who are eagerly awaiting their own KPA500 kit. Although I was told the assembly should take a couple hours, I spent 5.5 hours, going somewhat slowly and taking notes for feedback to Elecraft: 1.5 hours - parts inventory 2 hours - cabinet and power supply assembly 2 hours - RF module, front panel and button up There were some trivial details to clean up and they are worked out now for future kit shipments. There are a lot of screws, washers and such! Much more than I realized having only seen assembled units previously. The assembly manual is excellent and with every new Elecraft product I am still stunned at how well everything fits together. Ron anticipates questions that might arise at various points and heads them off with easily readable explanations along the way. It was the typical enjoyable and satisfying Elecraft kit experience with the only regret that it was over so soon. This is yet another exceptional design and execution of a top-end product by the company. 500 watts is a very conservative spec. The amp loafs at this power level and beyond. Instant on, no tuning (that was apparent to me), totally quiet, seldom any fan movement, exceptional integration with the K3, same easy firmware updating, etc. Change bands on either the K3 or the KPA500 and the other follows immediately. The controls are simple and intuitive, yet provide a rich set of functionality. A very elegant product that redefines what operating a linear amplifier can be like. [Elecraft] KPA500 kit versus factory
I'm hoping that those receiving KPA500 kits this week might post some assembly observations and thoughts on the assembly of the kit. I'm curious why there's more of a 'factory assembled versus kit' price premium with the amp versus the basic K3. Is there anything more complex required with the KPA500 assembly versus a K3? Any special test equipment or requirements beyond those required to put together the K3? Thanks all. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 kit versus factory
No, other than the need for a 1/2 wrench to tighten the big bolt that holds the power transformer in place the tools are similar to what you used on the K3 including a DMM for a few resistance checks. The KPA500 does not have as many parts as the K3, but it's a carefully engineered fit so it really only goes together smoothly one way; Following the assembly instructions will be important if you don't want to waste a lot of time. [Elecraft] KPA500 kit
I haven't seen it mentioned, but I'm wondering what the KPA500 kit plan is? Is it similar to the K3 kit, where it's akin to assembling a computer, where boards are put into an enclosure, or is it a solder some parts type kit? I'm assuming the former given the nature of the kit (having HV and big voltages floating around). I'm sure it's been mentioned by Elecraft somewhere I just can't seem to find it anywhere. Have there been any estimates on the number of hours expected to build the kit and what's involved?
