Re: [Elecraft] KPA800 @ $2.8k: count me in/out
N6XI added: I don't think the Elecraft amp is targetting the budget end of the market. You can't do that with a solid state amp - tubes are still a decidedly cheaper way to go high power. This amp is really two separate products - a very light, yet high quality expedition amp and a state-of-the-art, full power, fully automated home station amp capable of "SO2R1A." (That's running two transceivers with a single, time-shared amp.) I believe it will be competing initially in a field of one in both categories. Perhaps out-of-the-box field-of-one. A transfer relay & a little band switching logic can make any solid-state amp suitable for SO2R1A - just watch the duty cycle. Full power, of course, is somewhat relative - for much of the world market, many existing solid-state amps are already somewhat like Alphas - capable of a number of dB more than one is allowed & not break a sweat. Amplifiers are products where I have felt the multiplier from BOM to MSRP is hard to justify, as there is little room for adding apparent value. One of these is output matching - after years of driving my Ten-Tec 420E (export Hercules II) into ugly loads, I'm tempted to say I wish Elecraft current-limited the transistors too & not add cost to the product for something not exactly necessary. Or, since the K2 is like this, could it be that any fancy output matching is an option one could leave out? Wish we knew more. Between now & Dayton the design will not change if the product is to go into production soon. A frustrating little tease for those who are right now in the process of, or could be induced into making a purchase decision. ;^) 73, VR2BrettGraham ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I sent this by mistake to Stan (W5EWA) when I meant to send it to the group. Sorry, Stan! -Original Message- I seem to recall when I was a youngun and first getting interested in amateur radio that everybody knew Collins was the Cadillac of rigs. I've never owned or operated one, nor do I have any first-hand knowledge of their quality or how much they cost. I therefore obtained the following cost info off the web. It seems that the Collins 75S-3C receiver cost about $750.00 in 1967. According to an inflation calculator I found, that's the equivalent of about $4200.00 today, and it's only a receiver. Should it then be a big surprise that the IC-7800 with its two independent receivers (and transmitter) costs $10K+? <...ducks as those who think it heretical to even compare the two begin to foam at the mouth> De N3WZ - Jim > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:elecraft- > [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Stan Rife > Sent: Monday, April 25, 2005 7:03 PM > To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net > Subject: RE: [Elecraft] KPA800 @ $2.8k: count me in/out > > My idea of spendy IS 1500 bucks. 10,500 bucks for a radio is pure > H S... Re: [Elecraft] KPA800 @ $2.8k: count me in/out
$2800 (if that's a true figure) is quite inexpensive when you compare the KPA800 (if that's the correct model designator) with the closest competition on the market: the Icom PW-1 and the Yaesu Quadra. Both of those amps are solid state auto-tune and are rated at 1000 watts out on HF and 500 watts out on 6m. Both weigh in excess of 55 lbs including the built-in power supply. The KPA800 weighs 16 kg (35.5 lbs -- not 16 lbs as reported earlier on the list). The street price of a new PW-1 is $4600 and a new Quadra is $4000. The legal limit KPA1500 (if that's the correct model designator) would be in direct competition with the Alpha 87 and the Acom 2000 amps, which are both legal limit tube amps with auto-tune features and prices approaching $7000. To my knowledge, the KPA1500 would be the first legal limit solid state auto-tune HF amplifier to hit the market. IF YOU'RE IN THE MARKET FOR A QUALITY SOLID-STATE (or tube) HF AMP, you'll probably get more for less if you go with Elecraft. If you're not in the market for such an amplifier, don't flame the speculated price. What we have to do now is wait until Eric and/or Wayne gives further details about the amp on this reflector. 73, de Earl, K6SE ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Well, it all depends what you get. Without seeing it and/or seeing the specs it is somewhat difficult to make a statement about the amp. If it's auto everything in a tiny lightweight package with 1500W out on SSB and CW I might start drooling even before I get to Dayton. Does it cover 160-10 or 160-6M? Will it keep my coffee hot if I put the cup on the heat sink? Does it have a remote control head so I can put the amp in the basement and not have the heat and noise of an amp in the shack (One nice advantage of my 2000A)? How is the QSK in it? What power out with continuous modes? Does it switch bands automatically when changing bands with your transceiver, whether a K2 or other brand without having to send a dit? What kind of SWR will it handle? So, it sure seems premature to make a decision on the amp. That's what I think.
