Re: [Elecraft] New Elecraft product: XG3 All-Band RF Signal Source
Hello Ed I tried adding further attenuators to a low output sig gen several times in the past and found that the enclosure leakage was higher than the output signal. My solution was to place the sig gen several feet away in a deep metal housing with very good coax and then use the attenuators at the work bench. With remote pc control this might be useful to you. I'd be interested to know how you get on. 73 David G3UNA *Note: I have two 20-dB and one 30-dB step attenuator so I may be able to reduce the level for testing at -150 dBm. The 0dBm level may be strong enough for use with a rotating dipole for calibrating my 2m-eme dual-polarity receiver channels (about 130 feet of space loss). I have signal sources for 1296, 1420, and 2401 MHz that runs approx. 0 dBm and are detectable over that range. Very nice tool, Wayne. Guess I will have to get one. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

As far as I know, no one on our staff has made a QSO on an XG3 yet. But keep in mind that 0 dBm is only 30 dB below 1 watt. You are an old English-speaking geezer (or at least an American-speaking geezer.) But the modern metric system (SI, the International System of Units) tries to name derived units after people so as to avoid the problem of cycle per second not translating well into other languages. (In not all languages does the word for cycle start with the letter c. After all, it was the French, not the English, who first introduced the metric system. That's why this English-speaking (and French- and German-reading) geezer likes to follow the metric system style guide, found at http://www.bipm.org/utils/common/pdf/si_brochure_8_en.pdf. [Elecraft] New Elecraft product: XG3 All-Band RF Signal Source
The XG3 is a miniature, programmable, 160-2 meter (and higher) synthesized RF signal source that puts out highly accurate levels of -107 dBm (1 uV), -73 dBm (50 uV or S9), -33 dBm (S9+40), and 0 dBm. You can find the XG3 on our order page: http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_prod_list.htm There a high-resolution color photo of the unit on the cover of the XG3 manual: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/XG3%20Owner%27s%20Manual%20Rev %20B.pdf Built into a T1-sized enclosure, the XG3 runs on an internal 9-V battery or from an external power supply. Auto power-off is provided to save battery life, but you can override this when necessary. The XG3 includes band switches and LED indicators for 160-2 meters. Harmonics of the output can be used to produce signals on bands well into the microwave range. Any of the band switches can be programmed to cover any frequency in the 1.5 to 200 MHz range (or higher, using harmonics) by connecting a PC to the unit. Resolution is 1 Hz on all bands. You can set up frequency sweeps over any range, and even use the XG3 as a VFO or local oscillator for homebrew projects. The PC application can also be used to update the unit's firmware. The primary use of the XG3 is for receiver calibration, sensitivity testing, and signal tracing. However, since it's very small, lightweight, and rugged, it's also useful outdoors--for antenna evaluation, field strength measurements, micro-power beacons, etc. Please refer to the XG3 manual for additional details. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

However, since it's very small, lightweight, and rugged, it's also useful outdoors--for antenna evaluation, field strength measurements, micro-power beacons, etc. Please refer to the XG3 manual for additional details. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] New Elecraft product: XG3 All-Band RF Signal Source
Any chance the XG3 utility could also control the K3? Set frequency on both pieces of gear and read K3 S-meter or dbV values, saving them to a log file ... like a tracking generator. You'd have to be able to communicate via two ports, of course. 73, Dave AB7E On 4/13/2011 1:43 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote: Jim Sheldon wrote: That thing really looks nice Perfect piece of test equipment for the shack and portable operations. [Elecraft] New Elecraft product: XG3 All-Band RF Signal Source
Very Nice and a lot cheaper and more portable than most signal generators. 432.66 is third harmonic of 144.22 and 9th harmonic falls on 1297.98 (a little high for 1296 but may be usable). But if the frequency can be moved by computer control, then very useful. I like that it will go down to -107 dBm (my 2m eme threshold is -152 dBm*). The harmonic energy should be 1/n in level if true to most devices like a diode. 50ppm implies 144.22 x 50 Hz = 7211 or about 7 KHz at 2m. *Note: I have two 20-dB and one 30-dB step attenuator so I may be able to reduce the level for testing at -150 dBm. Yes, the 12 frequencies selectable from the front panel buttons can be stored using your computer for stand-alone use, or the computer can operate the XG3, giving you access to any frequency in from 1.5 to 200 MHz in 1 Hz steps. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 144-1.4kw, 432-100w, 1296-testing*, 3400-winter? [Elecraft] New Elecraft product: XG3 All-Band RF Signal Source
Hi Ron, It seems to me that I have to hand carry quite a lot of Elecraft gears back to Hong Kong after Dayton. TNX 73, Johnny VR2XMC 寄件人﹕ Ron D'Eau Claire r...@cobi.biz 收件人﹕ Edward R.
