[Elecraft] Radios on airlines

2008-04-23 Thread jac
From long experience, including a trip to ZS6 with my K2 wrapped in newspaper
in a plastic carrier bag, just days after 911.

1. keep the radio and/or parts in hand baggage. I have even hand carried a
TenTec Hercules II to Sevierville and back from UK with only one person
asking me to open the bag ! No-one asked to see my K3.

2. NEVER ever say you have something unusual ! I made that mistake with a an
Omni-V and had to get personal clearance from the plane captain before they
would even x-ray the thing (at Philadelphia.) And others were shoving
laptops, record players and all sorts of junk through x-ray without being
challenged.

3. Don't panic - whatever happens ! If you get visibly agitated, so will
security. See 1 above. Its just my travel radio ... worked all the way to
ZS6 from UK via Amsterdam, and back again.

I once took what would looked on camera as a hand grenade, same shape, size and
bits of wire coming out of it - actually a motor on a prony brake - thro UK and
USA airports and not challenged. I suggested their equipment might need
attention and was threatened by an armed plain-clothes person at JFK!
On the other hand I was politely asked what that strange thing in my bag was at
Friedrichshafen - it was a large glass envelope vacuum relay. I was delighted
to show the guard who asked have you come from the ham radio show?

Keep your trap shut is the best advice it seems.

[Elecraft] radios on airlines

2008-04-22 Thread Charles Harpole

Many times, carry one radios are swiped with a small pad that is then tested
for whatever should not show up.

Checked bags with radios are many times opened and checked.

The bad news of this the re-packing of the radio is sometimes haphazard and not
as good as you did.

I am called on to fly with ham radio, video cameras, and laptop computer
which should I check because

they all can not go in carry-on? In Delhi, the bag guys stole the camera and
computer but I was carrying

the radio Delta Airlines who refused to replace anything.

I've traveled with my K3 and had it in my carryon luggage, they never
 even asked what it was.

Now, my Begali paddle, that was another story. It's got a Palladium
base and apparently the xray can't see through it or something.
Anyhow, it took 3 agents to finally figure that one out and approve
 it. :)

   Hello Folks,
Going on a trip and was wondering what kind of hassle I would get if I
packed my KX1 in my baggage. Would it look like a bomb? Was thinking of
putting a copy of my amatuer ticket on the box. But I bet no one there
  knows
what a ham radio operator is. Is it worth the trouble?
