Recently ParcelFarce have started to crack down on the collection of
fees, which a few years ago were left to the "discretion" of the
postman delvering the package. If he couldn't be bothered then he
"forgot" (as happened with my K1 kit).
Now I find the ParcelFarce hold your goods at their depot and send a
letter to you detailing the charges and giving a reference number that
you need in order to pay the charge. Only after you've contected them
by phone or letter will they send it out for delivery. You can't phone
them to pay until you get the letter, becuase they can't identify your
parcel by anything other than the customs reference number!
For me this adds about 1 week to the process, as the initial letter
from ParcelFarce is send 2nd class, the depot is on the UK mainland and
I'm not, so after paying by credit card over the phone the parcel than
needs an overnight trip on the ferry.
Originally I could get goods from Elecraft in a week, even given my
offshore, remote location, but now I'm lucky if it's here within 2
weeks. It annoys me that I can track the parcel from Aptos to Aberdeen
and see it take 3 days at most, then have this stupid rigmarole of
waiting for the 2nd class letter before I can arrange to pay the
charges etc, which adds another week or more.

To corroborate what John GM4SLV says, when I bought something from the
US
(not Elecraft) last December, the first news I had of it was a letter
from a
ParcelForce depot in Leeds (not far from my QTH) asking for payment of
VAT
and their "Clearance Fee" before they would deliver. Incidentally the
letter
said they would keep it 20 days before returning to sender, so if the
system
is the same where David M0XDF lives he may not have a problem if he is
not
at home at the time.

I recently ordered a kit from the US. It arrived in 3 days by airmail.
It
was $40 so just above the threshold for applying VAT (£18 I believe).
My parcel was delivered by our postie resplendent with a big customs
label
saying £3.50 + £8 handling fee was due. Our postie looked at the
label,
shrugged and gave the parcel to my wife without collecting a penny.
I think it is the luck of the draw, and the larger the amount the
greater
the chance that someone will ask you to pay. I was lucky with my K2 -
was
not asked for VAT on that either!

Got the duty back eventually - seemed the person checking it in
couldn't be
bothered with the duty codes. Although the letter from customs made it
appear to be my fault that they had charged me.

True Tim, but their prices are very significantly higher than the US.
I always check qrpshop prices but even adding in the VAT and postage
buying
from the US direct is always much cheaper.
Bear in mind that there is no duty to pay on amateur radio kits anyway
- so
that does not enter into the equation.
As an example - a bare K2 now costs $620 from elecraft plus say $63 for
shipping. That is $692 which translates to £348.
Now add 17.5% VAT and £8 clearance fee = £417 in round numbers. Now
buy the
same item from Germany - 769 euros including VAT. Add 20 euros for
shipping
and that's 789 euros or £531. That's over £100 more! As I say, much
better
to go straight to the US and buy there.

At this point in the solar cycle 40m if you have space for an antenna.
If
you want to work Europeans on CW stay away from 7040 kHz plus minus
which
more often than not is covered by RTTY and other forms of QRM over
here.
7033 kHz down is fine.

Because Germany and the UK are both part of the EU:
that VAT in Germany is 19%, but there are no customs or parcel force
problems.
When I've imported stuff from the US to Germany either I end up going
to the
customs office here in Munich and paying them the 19% directly ...
.. or I've gotten calls from the parcel service (UPS, DPD, etc.)
informing that
they have a packet in Cologne (or elsewhere) for me. When the parcel
service
calls, then one has to try and explain what is in the package and "yes
you may
do customs for me". In this case an extra charge is added by the
parcel company.

Congratulations Frank.
First, until you pass the general class theory exam you are going to be
limited to CW only and only in the general class sections of the bands
on 80, 40, 15, and 10 meters. On 10 meters you also get voice privi's
from 28,300-28,500.
Second, while you're waiting for the K3 to arrive get cracking on the
general theory test. When you pass that you get all the HF bands and
modes.

When Fedex or UPS informs me by email that a package has been
delivered to
the nearest Parcel Force depot, I can phone the depot quoting the
tracking
reference number and pay any charges by card also get the approximate
time
of delivery to me next day. Parcel Force nevertheless sends me their
computer generated 2nd class letter ( on one occasion two!) which
arrives
here long after the package has been delivered here.
The last three items which I ordered from the States took on average 3
days
from time of shipment to clear HMG Customs in England, and over a week
to
get from England to Scotland!

Do you have any voltage at the emitter of Q11? Is that voltage getting
to U6 pin 5 (measure on the leg of U6 instead of at the socket).
Check U6 pin 5 - it could be bent under the chip or on the outside of
the socket.
If the voltage at Q11 emitter is zero, then check the differential
voltage between pins 2 and 3 of U3. That differential voltage should
result in a small voltage at U3 pin 1.
Check R7 and R8 for good soldering.

Hi David,
I use 50 to 100K resistors on my verticals for static
drain, plus arc plugs, 1:1 isolation baluns and my
feeds are either buried or laying on the ground.
Hopefully, any lightning will find an easier path to
ground than thru my rig!
My comments were geared towards folks with small
gardens and many antennas when operating. Grounding
unused antennas for one set of frequencies my be
detrimental to the pattern of the antenna you're
using.
I try to keep that in mind, particularly when I'm
phasing vertical systems. They are difficult enough
without inducing some unwanted influence from another
antenna. It's quite a challenge on the low bands.

Hi Frank,
I'd consider 80M, particularly between 3550 and 3560.
There are several groups that inhabit this area:
FISTS, NAQCC and QRPers. There's usually a couple QSOs
going on and you can find new CW ops as well as
oldtimers to build your confidence and speed.
40M is also popular (7025 to 7060), but you can run
into BC and SSB interference on popular frequencies
and times. It is more of a challenge. There's a lot of
QRP action here.
30M is a good option also. You have a shot at DX, it's
not too crowded and QRM is less likely from non-ham
sources.

Welcome to the low bands! I'd like to encourage you to try 30 meters.
It has several advantages over other bands: Since contest activity is
not
allowed you will not be up against many multi-element beams and KW+
competitors. 100W with a dipole will give you an average or better
signal.
And don't overlook the reasonable size of a 30 meter dipole and the
fact
that putting it at 30 ft or higher gives you a respectable radiation
angle
and opportunity for some juicy DX contacts.
All the bands have something to offer, but I think that 30 has the most
advantages and the best probability of success for a beginner.

I thought I was nearing completion of my KX1, but I seem to have a
problem now.
Upon completion of the basic KX1, all tests were completed as
expected. Current & resistance tests were right on and I was able to
peak the 20m & 40m trimmers as directed in the manual. I'm using an
XG2 signal generator as a signal source, set at 1uV output.
I then installed the power modification kit (2 resistors) and began
work on the KXB3080. That was an intense, eye-fatiguing evening,
particularly with the LPF1 board. However, it all went together
exactly as described in the manual. BTW, I'm using Mychael's torroids
throughout. After getting everything assembled & installed, I
repeated the current & resistance checks as directed and they were all
exactly right. However, when I went to realign the receiver trimmers,
I no longer hear any signal regardless of their setting. I hear
something akin to background noise (as I did prior to the KXB3080), so
it isn't an audio issue.
I've double checked solder joints, checked to be sure the KX1 is in
"nor" (CW) mode, and is on the correct frequency for the XG2's output
(and I tried moving frequency up and down a ways in case the KX1 freq
display is off a bit).
Where would I go from here? Thanks for any help you can provide! I'm
hoping to take this on vacation with me this weekend :).

A directional coupler similar to the Elecraft CP1 is used in many
wattmeter applications, and should not create any unusual impedance
discontinuity.
You can in fact use an RF probe (or 'scope) at the FWD and the REV
terminals of the CP1 to measure the RF voltage and calculate the power
and SWR.

Mike,
Check all the changes that you made during the KXB3080 installation.
Especially check T2 and the LPF to be certain the toroids are installed
exactly like the photos in the manual. It is important to have flush
trimmed the leads on the LPF board relay so they do not contact (and
scrape) the windings on L1 and L2.
Did you make the PC trace cut as specified on the bottom of the KX1
board?
You know the receiver worked before the KXB3080, so most of the
receiver
does work - the KXB3080 changes the components in the front end of the
receiver, so you will find your problem there.
Try using the 50 uV output from the XG1 to see if you can find the
signal - the 1 uV may be too low until the receiver front end has been
initially tuned.

The ground hardware is part of the KAT2, but the silk-screening is on
the
base top cover.
Your ground needs depend on your antenna installation. I need to go to
the

Frank,
You should be able to repair it yourself. Use wire to repair the
damaged traces - #30 wire-wrap wire works great for that purpose, but
you can use whatever your have in a small gauge wire - if there is
danger that the wire may contact other parts of the circuits, use
insulated wire.
The schematic is a guide to show you 'which connects to what' - use it.
As long as everything is properly connected, it should work fine.

As a passing comment ...
My Lady (N7HKW) and I are lighthouse hosts for the
Oregon State Parks Department from November through
April of each year.
As an amateur working at two of Oregon's lighthouses for
five years, I wouldn't participate in activating the lighthouses.
I know how some management staff ... and more importantly
visitors ... view the "occupation" each year.
I happened to be in a park office on business the day that
a local club's representative for the week's occupation came
to apply to use the lighthouse and heard the after-he-left
discussion.
Of course I understand what's behind the event, but from my
perspective of how it's viewed by non-amateurs , it's counter
productive. Almost embarrassing, actually.
We will, of course buy a few plate blocks of Oregon's Umpqua
River Lighthouse stamp. (:-))
