Re: [Elecraft] Short Wave Receiver

2010-02-18 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Hi Bob,

Not a direct answer to your question about favourite programs, but you would
find the frequency and time information for English language broadcasts in
the World Radio TV Handbook It is not expensive and will provide you with,
and I quote, "Comprehensive country-by-country listings of Long, Medium and
Shortwave Broadcasters by frequency, time and language". The copy that I
have includes a separate listing of international (i.e. SW) English language
broadcasts, with times, frequency and station, which saves time digging
through the main listing for English language broadcasts.

Lists of TV stations by country are also included, which can be very useful
to anyone interested in 6m or 2m DX.

I have no financial interest in this publication.

I own an Icom IC-R75 loaded with filters for both IF and I do love it either
for AM broadcast signals or SSB but certainly IF Elecraft could develop let say
the "K3R" I will be the first to purchase one,it would be like having again
another K3 without the TX inside,it could be even smaller, half the K3 size, with
same slots for roofers, same DSP,same audio PA.
I am sure would be a total sucess.

As an SWL since childhood, this is a subject near and dear to my
heart... :-)

After JRC and Drake abandoned the consumer HF receiver market there
has been a dearth of great tabletop receivers for the SWL. There are
commercial receivers but they cost multi-kilobucks, leaving little in
the middle between pro receivers and portables -- Icom R75 being the
only amateur manufacturer to offer any HF receivers, and I never cared
for their past offerings like the R71A and R72. I know many non-ham
SWLs who are using transceivers in order to get the advanced features
needed for serious SWLing (good filtering, noise reduction, notch,
passband shift, etc) without having to spend upwards of $4000 for a
pro box.

I don't know that removing the transmitter section from the K3 and
repackaging it as a receiver would knock enough off the price of a
basic K3 with KBPF3 and a 6 kHz filter (approx. $1700) to make it a
worthwhile venture for Elecraft. The $1700 price is actually quite
attractive, considering that's about what a JRC NRD-535D sold for
nearly 20 years ago. I've recommended the K3 to several SWLs recently;
whether any of them bought one is uncertain, but the price tag
certainly didn't scare anyone away.

Bob, try these two web sites:

http://www.short-wave.info/

http://www.primetimeshortwave.com/

Not sure if that helps with the "interesting" part, but certainly
helps you find English broadcasts!

My favorite stations have always been Radio Australia and Radio New
Zealand. They come pounding into Texas early mornings on the 31m band.
Haven't done much SWBC DXing in recent years but found RA and RNZ
while testing out the K3's AM synch detection and ended up staying up
until dawn listening to them, feeling nostalgic about the old days
when I used to do the same thing with a DX-160...

I hereby revise and extend my remarks to read, "Icom being the only
amateur manufacturer to offer any HF receivers with knobs and
buttons." ;-)

Admittedly, I considered the Ten-Tec RX-340 ($4000+, clearly falls
into the "pro" category) but forgot about the 320D which I'm sure is a
fine radio.

Re: [Elecraft] Short Wave Receiver

2010-02-17 Thread Robert Fish
Hi Guys,

I also was an SWL'er as a kid but haven't done much of it recently
because most of my rigs over the years have been Ham band only.
I did, however order my K3 with the General Coverage option. I am also
very impressed with the great sound when a good pair of tabletop
speakers are added to the rig. I have done a limited amount of searching
at night between 40 and 80 meters. In the day I have looked a bit between
30 and 15 meters. I have had a hard time finding interesting English
language programming. Which brings me to the question, for those of you
that enjoy
SWL'ing, what are your favorite programs. What Freq are they on and
when? I did stumble across a Morning show from an African Station one
evening late here in Ca.
I think they were in Zimbabwe. They had traffic reports, financial
reports and a couple of guys joking around in between, just like a
drive time show here in the
states I found it fascinating. So what do you SWL'ers listen to?

Sorry if this is Off Topic or too long,

Bob K6GGO

[Elecraft] Short Wave Receiver

2010-02-17 Thread Doug Turnbull
Hi Eric and Elecrafters,
I have just installed my second RX with the KBPF3. I am just now
listening to the shortwave broadcast bands and using the 13 KHz NBFM filter
and 6 kHz AM filter am surprised at how good the radio does with a pair of
micro KLH HiFi Speakers for SWLing. This is not my normal hobby but I
wonder if as others have suggested if Elecrafter may have a ready made
product for a market which may be larger than the ham market. A top end
SWL receiver might not be too difficult for Elecraft to eventually add to
their product line.

The K3 is certainly providing me with entertainment. My normally
feeling is that all bands must take second place to HF amateur bands. Six
and two meters are for me very much secondary to the best performance on the
HF bands for which no compromise should be made. The K3 however seems to
do it all. Wayne and Eric at Elecraft are truly fine engineers.
