Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the kind words. :-) At this point all we're saying is before
the end of this year, which is coming t us pretty fast!

I'll have more details as we progress.

Once again, I think you folks have a real winner. I am definitely going to
watch the reflector and when the new unit is available I will pounce. It
looks like it will have all of the features I have been looking for. Do you
have any estimate yet as to when it might be available?

Re: [Elecraft] Some P3 Details

2009-08-16 Thread Brett Howard
Let me see if I can help...

A panadapter is a lot like a piece of professional equipment called a
spectrum analyzer. If you are so inclined you can read about spectrum
analyzers too but what it gives you is a plot of amplitude vs frequency.
Most often in a panadapter the center frequency is the frequency that
your radio is on and the graph provides you information about what is
going on in the radio spectrum around you. So you can literally see
that there is another CW contact going on just below you or you can tune
into the SSB portion of the band and literally see the contacts going on
then simply put a curson on a particular peak and poof you're instantly
tuned and listening to that station. This becomes handy if you're on a
quiet band as you can look at the panadapter and get an instant snap
shot of whats going on on the whole band at once with out dialing
around. And during a contest it can help you find stations and/or help
you find holes in which to call.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone know of a Dummies Guide to Panadaptors that covers:

  What is a Panadaptor?
  What is it used for?
Why a ham might want one?

One last question that I'm more than willing to keep quiet but its been
on my mind wondering as I've been in a platform defining feasibility
tick at work lately...

Can I ask what processor you've selected? ARM based?

Is there an ability for the K3 to display information on the P3 screen?
Such that it may be used as a larger output for RTTY/CW/PSK decoded
information. This way one can not only see more text but also use
decode while seeing both VFO freqs.

[Elecraft] Some P3 Details

2009-08-15 Thread Wayne Burdick
In answer to some of the questions heard at the hamfest and posted here:

- the P3 can go left or right of the K3

- the screen refresh rate will be selectable; the prototype was
running at about six times/second, but we hope to increase that to 20/
sec

- there are eight programmable switch functions that could be used as
instant K3 band selects and/or other K3 or P3 functions

- it could be used with other rigs with only firmware changes, but we
have no immediate plans in this regard

73,
