Re: [Elecraft] TS-890 vs K4D performance?

2023-10-25 Thread Keith Trinity WE6R
Anyone that posted in this thread after Eric's post, that were not
discussing the TS-980 vs K4D, were inappropriate.

(except mine of course)
I stepped in only because folks kept bickering and I am list Manager.

Contemplate it this way; What if every 7,000 plus members jumped in with
their comments that had nothing to do with the topic.

How would anyone be able to find info pertinent to the topic?

You know what Eric meant.
Folks have appropriately emailed me directly, that is fine, shoot may
any questions or if you just want to vent.

Please let's get back to discussing radios.
I believe there are some list guidelines from Eric in the Archives, if
someone can search and email it to me directly, that would be great.

(Ham-Radio pays my mortgage!) hi hi
I have plenty of work here to get folks their radios.
Thanks,
Keith WE6R list Manager

Well said Mark and thanks for doing so.

I also monitor several Elecraft groups. Because, like you, I have other
Elecraft equipment.

One thing I would ask of any new subscribers to our K4 group is that you supply
both your name and callsign. This saves us a lot of problems trying to verify
genuine members, or having to email the prospective member, asking for info.

Re: [Elecraft] TS-890 vs K4D performance?

2023-10-24 Thread Mark Musick
Guys,
As I mentioned in an earlier post to John, WB5THT, this reflector is really not
the place to discuss at any length anything about the K4/K4D. There is a
dedicated reflector for that at Elecraft-K4 @groups.io.
Bob, N6TV one of the K4 testers is on that reflector and answers many
questions. I'm not saying the K4 shouldn't be discussed here. I'm just pointing
out that on the K4 reflector you will get a much more in depth, varied and
informative answer than you will on this reflector. Most K4/K4D owners do not
monitor this reflector. By the way there are over 1500 K4s out there at the
point.
The very question of this thread was discussed at length sometime ago on the K4
reflector. The thread not only discussed a comparison to the 890, but the 7610,
990 and other radios such as ANAN.
Rob Sherwood is on the K4 reflector and owns an 890. He put his thoughts out
about the two radios. He also discussed other radios he has used as compared to
the K4. Others who have owned or do own an 890 gave their thoughts as well.
All one has to do is subscribe to the K4 reflector and search the archives. If
you ask the question, Bob, N6TV will probably answer by providing you with the
link to the thread.
In the files section there is a huge file that has many questions and answers
that have appeared on the reflector. Also, many questions on programming macros
etc. also exist in the files section.
If you are wondering why I monitor this reflector, I have a K3, 2-K3S, K2,
KPA500, KAT500 and KPA1500. This is the place where that equipment is
discussed. As to my K4D I monitor both reflectors. Quite honestly, I can't ever
remember a K4 question being asked here that wasn't already asked and answered
on the K4 reflector.
By the way you don't have to own a K4 to join the reflector. Anyone interested
in the K4, weather they own one or not, is welcome.
Those are my thoughts Gentlemen. I'll go back to sleep now.

Thank you Eric. I certainly didn't want to start a conflagration on the
list, I do appreciate you stepping in here. I used the K3 reflector
because I have a K3s and this is the one I'm subscribed to and read.

As a slight tangent I've noticed in the past the topics have

in, perhaps a good policy for the users here?

Almost never, unless it is a new product that was not available at the
time of original purchase.
I do my research, analysis, comparison shopping, etc. /before/ I buy.
Saves a lot of mistakes and regrets.

For instance, I spent about 6 months researching my purchase of an ALL
BANDS transceiver in 2016.  I chose the Elecraft K3s because overall, it
was the best made, performing, supported transceiver line on the planet.

I arrived at that position after a great deal of research, demos, etc,
etc.  THEN, I spent hours studying the assembly and ops manuals.  Etc,
etc, et al. ad nauseum.

I am very deliberate in my decision-making.

LMAO! Yes, because anecdotal story-telling on this list by various
un/under-qualified people making comments on equipment they cannot even BEGIN
to understand MUCH LESS operate anywhere near its capabilities.

This is the Elecraft manufacturer's list. It is here to discuss ELECRAFT gear.
Ask Wayne or Eric. It belongs to THEM.

IF you choose to talk about NON-Elecraft gear, be prepared to field very
pointed questions about your qualifications and testing methods. Because if you
are acting a 'fool", it WILL be revealed that you do not know what you don't

Be well!

Just saying. there are numerous other venues to discuss your Asian

Elecraft radios taught me to always have a spare, so considering
similar ergonomics, I also acquired a TS-590.  Before all of these I
had a Kenwood TS-870 that was flawless for 13 years.

True Elecraft service has been fine, the problem has been I've needed
too much of it.  My Kenwood stuff has never required service, so I
can't comment on it.

The notch filter on the '890 isn't automatic but the beat cancel is
and quite effective.  I used to say about my '870 that Kenwood wasted
valuable panel space by putting a noise blanker switch on it and the
'890 isn't a whole lot better. The K3 can be, if you don't mind 400+
different adjustment possibilities.

Sorry I can't comment on the K4, since obviously I don't own one, and
I doubt that I ever will, that ship has sailed.

Hi all,

Long time fan of Elecraft, I have a K3s and a KPA1500, both are
currently in service. My primary HF radio is now a TS-890, I bought
it about four or so years ago after giving up waiting on the K4's to
be off the shelf ready to purchase.

So on to my questions about the two rigs. For those who have fairly
recent experience running both the TS-890/K4's I would greatly
appreciate anyone's thoughts and comments about the two rigs. I
really like the 890 after I finally figured out how to run it (hi
hi). I like the visual representation of adjusting the high and low
bandpass filters on the waterfall. One feature of the 890 I don't
like is the notch filter isn't automatic unlike my K3s.

I know there's a lot of complaints about relatively poor DSP noise
reduction on the 890 and I do agree it's not in the same class as my
K3s but nonetheless it's still quite effective. Receive sensitivity
on my 890 is outstanding, I'll have to give it a subjective 5 stars
and my K3s 4 stars.

One huge bonus of Elecraft is factory service which I've had to use
a couple of times with my K3s. I give it 5 stars :-)

Any helpful comments are greatly appreciated and please be brutally
honest.

No sir, that was not the least you could say.  You could have kept your mouth
shut and keyboard silent.

You are also WRONG.  I was NOT rude.  I was patient and courteous.

I can assure you that you most decidedly DO NOT want me to SHOW you "rude".

Now...  pull your panties up and start acting like a grown man, not some "soy

2023-10-22 Thread Mark Musick
HI John,
You really should ask this question on the Elecraft-K4 groups.io reflector.
There have been discussions there comparing the K4 to the 890. There are
several on the reflector that have owned both.
You will get a better answer there.
Rob Sherwood is one who has owned or used both and if you look through the
archives you will find his comments.

Subject: [Elecraft] TS-890 vs K4D performance?

Hi all,

Long time fan of Elecraft, I have a K3s and a KPA1500, both are currently in
service. My primary HF radio is now a TS-890, I bought it about four or so
years ago after giving up waiting on the K4's to be off the shelf ready to
purchase.

So on to my questions about the two rigs. For those who have fairly recent
experience running both the TS-890/K4's I would greatly appreciate anyone's
thoughts and comments about the two rigs. I really like the 890 after I finally
figured out how to run it (hi hi). I like the visual representation of
adjusting the high and low bandpass filters on the waterfall. One feature of
the 890 I don't like is the notch filter isn't automatic unlike my K3s.

I know there's a lot of complaints about relatively poor DSP noise reduction on
the 890 and I do agree it's not in the same class as my K3s but nonetheless
it's still quite effective. Receive sensitivity on my
890 is outstanding, I'll have to give it a subjective 5 stars and my K3s
4 stars.

One huge bonus of Elecraft is factory service which I've had to use a couple of
times with my K3s. I give it 5 stars :-)

Any helpful comments are greatly appreciated and please be brutally honest.
