[Elecraft] USB Sound Adapter

2012-08-23 Thread Clint
I found an adaptor based on the VIA Envy VT1620A . (
http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/audio/usb/vt1620a/index.jsp )

It is on eBay for $14.00! :
http://www.ebay.com/itm/plug-into-USB-Stereo-Sound-Adapter-Easily-Fix-Upgrade-Computer-Sound-System-/310401470794?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D1535698449564030522%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26

Now lets see if it works. Should get a chance to try next week. Grandkids
first, then home and play with K3...

Weird. The ebay item write-up says mono-mic input at one point, but it also
talks about two ADCs. Which is it?

Thanks for the info, please keep us informed.

This dongle looks identical to many being sold for less that $2.00 free
shipping that advertize as 7.1 with only stereo connections. If
anyone orders this Id be curious if its opened up as to what chip is
really in it.

Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Adapter

2012-08-29 Thread Jim Campbell
I purchased this item on a whim. It arrived Monday. I plugged it in and
installed the drivers that were included on an accompanying CD. After I
had installed the drivers I unplugged the device and found the USB end
of the device to be hot to the touch. I don't know what is going on but
am uncomfortable having a device plugged into my laptop that is getting
this hot.

I plugged the device in again just now and opened the accompanying audio
control panel. It showed two slider bars for the microphone input. I get
the impression that the builders of this device provided a stereo input
but didn't expect anyone to use stereo microphones with such an
inexpensive item.

I don't plan to use this item because of the heat problem. I would like
to hear of the experience of others.

I complained to the seller that my adapter was getting too hot to touch
in a little over a minute and the seller offered to refund what I paid,
including shipping. I accepted his offer.

Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Adapter

2012-08-31 Thread David Cutter
Typical! Low cost items are often only batch tested and the customer does
the final test.
A second one might have worked perfectly well. It's all about
probabilities.

A cheap device like this is ideal for long term noise monitoring.

Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Adapter

2012-09-13 Thread Jim LeFevre
Simple question: I also jumped at the first message, what a deal, as I would
like to get going on JT65 in a couple weeks. I ordered and received the same
bubble pack, same (looking) dongle, but it clearly states on the "manual" that
the mic input is mono. Is it not what it appears, like, is it a "stereo" jack
that takes two signals in with a common shield? Thanks, Jim WN8A

I
purchased two of these devices from Amazon right before someone on this
reflector posted that the one he bought got very hot to the touch and
the seller took it back and refunded his money.

I now have two of
these and neither has even gotten warm.  Both seem to work fine.  Can't
believe no shipping charge as they arrived by USPS from China!

But
be careful.  There are several models that look alike externally.  But
only one has stereo microphone input.  This is the one with stereo:
SYBA USB sound card
SYBA SD-AUD20101
VIA ENVY VT1620A

It works.  Haven't tested it for noise, etc., yet.

I got this card yesterday and surprisingly it produces fewer artifacts than a
card built into my desktop. Does 96k. But NaP3 freezes from time to time on
