[Elecraft] Friedrichshafen
Since I found myself less than a 6-hour drive away from Friedrichshafen, Germany this weekend, I decided to cross something off my bucket list and attend the world-famous amateur radio convention. Several people told me that the event was smaller than in previous years, but it still was impressive. The Elecraft booth seemed to have a constant crowd around it. Eric and the others manning the booth were busy all weekend. Eric's Elecraft update presentation Friday at noon was standing-room only. He reviewed the K4 and upcoming new firmware and products. I should have taken notes. I remember him discussing the VHF/UHF module and several firmware enhancements. The flea market filled a large hall. I am told that last year is was a hall and a half. It took me almost two hours to go through it The items on display were mostly familiar from US ham flea markets I have attended. I was surprised to see a fair amount of old Collins gear - e.g. a complete Collins S-line in very good condition for 1600 Euros. I noticed a lot more microwave equipment and parts than is usual in the US. I think that microwave operation is more common in EU. Friedricshafen is a resort area of DL land. People generally eat outdoors in the town looking out across the Bodensee to mountains in HB land. You can take ferries all around L. Constance visiting both HB and OE lands. They run as one expects being so close to HB and are not dear. No problem with English as the DLs are most understanding of our lack of language skills. Most restaurants either have English on the menu or an English menu. If you are on your own it is not difficult to join in with another group. Oh and the beer is good.We will be staying in the town at first Hotel City Krone with a split to the Select Hotel and then back to Hotel City Krone. You do not want the incumberance of a car. Hi all, It seems to me that a gathering at Friedrichshafen for us Elecrafters might be a good idea. I'll be attending with Jan G0BBL and Alan M0PUB and all of us have built K2s..we are staying in Lindau and hopefully will operate portable from Austria, Switzerland and Germany whilst we are therepossibly Maritime Mobile from the ferry to Switzerland...if Maritime is the right word...
