Re: [Elecraft] K2 VOX - Straw Poll - Follow up - Long
Guys, I am amazed how dense the K2/100 really is when you take off the right cover to check to see if the cables are pinched. A suggestion would be to use double sided sticky tape and stick on on the KPA100 shield with some sort of header pins to unplug it when you remove the KPA100. Place it on the shield where it could fit in the K2 box. I am not sure what would happen to any kind of RF into the audio stage but since everything is so close in there anyway it might not be a problem. If you have some controls...gain, antivox, etcthat might be an issue that is insurmountable. Stewart That sounds like a really worthwhile project. Please keep us informed of your progress. I might actually want to fire up my KSB2 with such an "option" to help it out. 73, Bob N6WG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Stewart: To be honest I had not even considered that. I have my KPA100 installed with the KAT100 in an EC2 case. Looking at the clearance left by the KPA100 in the EC2 case I doubt that there is enough head room above the KSB2 if the amplifier were mounted in the K2. There are precious few spaces left to put anything. I need my VOX to work the way I want, so compromises must be made. I guess the solution could be done in SMD, but that's rather against the K2 ethic. Actually, I suspect there are a number of folks out there clamoring to try SMD assembly. Possibly, this could be a small enough project that they might JUMP at it. I suspect the project won't be of much use to nearly as many others, if it can't be somehow implemented in all K2s... There are a couple of reasons. First, VOX is much better in contests, where I frequently operate Phone. Second, although I have a footswitch, I'm now using an SO2R box, as well as a one-message voice keyer. Because of the cabling of each, I can't use the footswitch, so I'm forced to use VOX. I find the K2 VOX has some limitations. I've replaced R14 on the SSB board with a 3.9k resistor in order to get a bit more responsiveness out of it. The lack of anti-VOX doesn't hurt too bad. It could really use a VOX gain adjustment, however. During contests, I've often encountered a situation where the K2 just goes completely deaf to VOX. My voice keyer will drop out, even though I can trigger the rig by shouting into the mike. Since I've changed R14, this happens less often. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - VOX - Straw Poll
The VOX can be entertaining. A few months ago in the 20m CW band I heard a telephone ringing. That can happen if you get up and leave without turning it off. The microphone I use is a homebrew boom-set that has an electret element. It has plenty of output and triggers the VOX quickly and reliably. I would very much like the K2 to have a dedicated vox on/off control. Having to cycle through the menu, especially on a "hold" type button, is a pain. It is hard to eliminate a sneeze or other sounds not intended for transmission. > b) If not, why not ? I turn VOX off if I'm operating in a noisy environment, such as portable operations when the planes from a nearby airport are taking off in my direction. 73, Gus Hansen Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - VOX - Straw Poll
Hi Stewart, No I do not use VOX I do not like the inevitable clipping of the first syllable of the over. I especially do not like having to be careful not to speak when I am meant to be listening (its occasionally necessary to shout at the cat, dog, xyl or whatever :-) External noised beyond my control can trip the TX. Finally, I am quite capable of remembering to press the PTT switch before speaking :-) 73, Trev G3ZYY In message <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Stewart Baker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes Hi, I am asking for feedback from SSB operators on VOX operation on the K2. a) Do you use VOX ? b) If not, why not ?
