Ideally you want a spreader that you don't have to thread the wire thro:
imagine threading hundreds of feet or wire thro tiny holes in scores of
plastic parts.
I helped a friend make spreaders from the only plastic we had which was
stiff plastic hose pipe. We cut it into 4" (100mm) lengths then split each
length into 4 pieces length-ways. About 1/2" (12mm) from each end I drilled
a hole of about the same or slightly smaller than the wire size, then took a
sharp modelling knife (Stanley knife over here) to slit from the hole to the
outer edge. The wire was then pressed into the slit and held at the tight
hole.

Subject: [Elecraft] Ladder Line spacers
I've made some ladder line using plastic parts of electrical staples.
Homely Depot, Lowes, etc sell staples for large electrical cable that
consist of a plastic bridge with a nail inserted thru a hole at each end.
They come in various sizes (e.g., for 3/4 inch, 1 inch, two inch service
entrance wire). If you pull out the nails you can insert your wires thru the
holes and secure them with a dab of hot-melt glue. Plus you'll have a bunch
of nails left over.
