Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Replacing tuning knob with one from Ten-Tec

2011-05-26 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Jim,

I cannot say for certain because I have not seen the knob.
I do have a concern for knobs that are heavy and do not fit properly
against the felt washer.
For one thing, the heavier knob spaced out from the front panel will put
extra downward stress on the encoder shaft - that is canceled out if the
new knob is in full contact with the felt washer. A bent encoder shaft
will create binds when tuning.
Secondly, a knob with no slight friction will allow the VFO to drift
when you tap on the operating table or just breathe on the knob. You
must have some friction on the knob for the VFO to be stable.

So bottom line, if the new knob makes contact with the felt washer, it
should be fine, but if it does not, be aware of the consequences.

If that knob does not work properly for you, a 'finger dimple' can be
ordered from Elecraft, and a rubber tire from the Yaesu FT100, FT900, or
(I believe) the FT847 (possibly others) can be stretched to fit over the
stock K2 knob to reduce the pain from the sharp front edge of the K2 knob.

I've searched through the archives provided by Leigh, and found that
various replacement tuning knobs for the K2 work well.
 Among others, the FT-100.

 I have a heavier-duty metal knob that I bought from Ten-Tec as a
replacement for the knob on the Argonaut V, but traded that radio in to
Ten-Tec toward an Eagle before I could install it.

This knob is no lightweight, but has the finger dimple.

Any problems with replacing the stock K2 tuning knob with this one?

I have a heavy-ish 73crc knob on my K2, and I prefer the feel with the
felt washer completely removed. It doesn't drift when bumped although it
could be that I have an especially stiff encoder. The finger dimple is
too small for my stubby finger, so I stuck an Elecraft-supplied finger
dimple over the top, making it a bit of a Frankenstein knob. So far the
encoder shaft remains unbent, touch wood.
