You are an old English-speaking geezer (or at least an American-speaking
geezer.) But the modern metric system (SI, the International System of
Units) tries to name derived units after people so as to avoid the
problem of "cycle per second" not translating well into other
languages. (In not all languages does the word for "cycle" start with
the letter "c". After all, it was the French, not the English, who
first introduced the metric system.

That's why this English-speaking (and French- and German-reading) geezer
likes to follow the metric system style guide, found at
.

I sympathize with Tom. We honor people by adopting their name for
measurements and thereby lose what the original designations provided.

Of course back in the 50's and 60's there were many who objected if we

Mr Herz was a man who passed away many years ago.

I prefer the use of cycles, because they indicate the exact type of the
measurement, but I'm just an old geezer who prefers many aspects of the old

Hello Ed

I tried adding further attenuators to a low output sig gen several times in
the past and found that the enclosure leakage was higher than the output
signal. My solution was to place the sig gen several feet away in a deep
metal housing with very good coax and then use the attenuators at the work
bench. With remote pc control this might be useful to you. I'd be
interested to know how you get on.

Yes, the 12 frequencies selectable from the front panel buttons can be
stored using your computer for stand-alone use, or the computer can
"operate" the XG3, giving you access to any frequency in from 1.5 to 200 MHz

Very Nice and a lot cheaper and more portable than most signal
generators. 432.66 is third harmonic of 144.22 and 9th harmonic
falls on 1297.98 (a little high for 1296 but may be usable). But if
the frequency can be moved by computer control, then very useful. I
like that it will go down to -107 dBm (my 2m eme threshold is -152
dBm*). The harmonic energy should be 1/n in level if true to most
devices like a diode. 50ppm implies 144.22 x 50 Hz = 7211 or about 7
KHz at 2m.

*Note: I have two 20-dB and one 30-dB step attenuator so I may be
able to reduce the level for testing at -150 dBm.

The 0dBm level may be strong enough for use with a rotating dipole
for calibrating my 2m-eme dual-polarity receiver channels (about 130
feet of space loss). I have signal sources for 1296, 1420, and 2401
MHz that runs approx. 0 dBm and are detectable over that range.

Very nice tool, Wayne. Guess I will have to get one.

2011-04-13 Thread Bill (K9YEQ)
Wayne,

Did you leave room inside for an SSB SMD board and micro tuner? I ordered
one so I just need to know. I also did the 144 transverter mod just after
noting the email for the former. In the meantime you guys slipped me a head
fake with the 144 mod so I called! I hope I don't miss anything coming out
tomorrow in this order. Like a remote 1.5 KW tuner. :-)

I think this is a first for the list. XG3 announced and in less than 24
hours [actually I think less than 12], a mod suggestion. :-D

If I didn't already have a service monitor, I'd have the stock XG3 on order.

Any chance the XG3 utility could also control the K3? Set frequency on
both pieces of gear and read K3 S-meter or dbV values, saving them to a
log file ... like a tracking generator. You'd have to be able to
communicate via two ports, of course.

That thing really looks nice -- I need one and have already downloaded the
manual and placed my order. Perfect piece of test equipment for the shack and
portable operations.
