Re: [Elecraft] OT: 2 port 50 ohm RX splitters ---TNX

2014-01-02 Thread David Anderson
I Purchased 5 used Mini Circuits 3dB splitters from China for about $28 on eBay
including shipping from half way round the world.
5-500 MHZ with SMA connectors
Model ZFSC-2-1

Lots of uses for them, splitting 10MHz standards, dual receivers on single
antenna etc.

I did previously build a 3dB hybrid from a design in an ARRL handbook many
years ago when I wanted to do some 2 tone testing on a receive converter, but
with the availability of good quality surplus nowadays it isn't worth the time
and effort!

Thanks guys. Looks like the W8JI design is easiest to build.
Mouser has the binocular cores needed.

A while back there were some postings on recommended commercial 50 ohm two

Can't find the postings. Cheaper is better. Loss for my application is
relatively unimportant since they will be signal generator driven and
followed by step attenuators. Simple HB designs may also be of interest.
 Kits would be ideal.

Of course the K3 has one built in to route the main RX antenna to both the
 main and sub rx.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: 2 port 50 ohm RX splitters ---TNX

2014-01-01 Thread Jack Smith
I would note that if you intend to use combiners with signal generators
for intermodulation measurements care has to be taken with core
selection if high performance amplifiers are to be evaluated.

After a great deal of experimentation, the limit of my 2nd and 3rd order
IMD measurement capability is +100 dBm (2nd order) and +55 dBm (3rd
order) but that required evaluating a half dozen or more 3 dB combiners
and quite a few other components as well. The best of my Norton
amplifiers press against these limits.

Some discussion and measured data for various 3 and 6 dB combiners at my
web site:

http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/6_db_hybrid_combiner.htm
http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/Documents/Notes%20on%20Building%20a%20Z10050A.pdf

I've modified my test equipment setup since the first page link was
written - presently use a pair of HP 8657A signal generators and an HP
8568B spectrum analyzer. But the ZHL-3A amplifiers remain in use and
are essential.
