Nick,
With all due respect and caution, please don't think that allowing for
lightning to come into your radio with your radio's input being routed to
your dummy load is "better" or provides any level of protection whatsoever
over "being solidly connected".
The proper use of a lightning arrestor(s) OUTSIDE your home on all coax
lines and control cables is the only way to protect your station.
Disconnecting your feedline(s) and all control cables from your internal
shack wiring is a good idea too.
The thing to keep in mind is that your intent should be to keep lightning
outside your shack so it cannot do any damage.
When lightning comes inside, there is no limit on the damage it can cause
throughout your home.

Speaking of the powering down housekeeping routines, here's one I
wondered about a while back. Maybe it's a proposal ...
I generally just use the ANT1 connector and do my antenna switching and
disconnecting ahead of that, externally. ANT 2 is currently connected
to my dummy load. Assuming the antenna relays remain latched in their
last selected position when off, it might be a good enhancement to have
the rig switch to a defined position when OFF, as an option. In many
cases, that could provide modest protection against lightning induced
transients entering the rig.
Not as good as disconnecting, but better than being solidly connected,
in my opinion.
