Re: [Elementary-dev-community] Switchboard Restructure

I agree on pretty much all the criticism. It's a nice aesthetic, but
functionality wise I think it has to many flaws. Nice effort, but a
no-go for me.

As I commented on the merge request I disapprove of this branch for
several reasons:

* The vertical layout doesn't really make sense to me. Displays are
typically landscape, not portrait. Remember, Switchboard is not a
static thing, it's extendable meaning that we have no idea how many
plugs it will contain. This layout seems more prone to unecessary
amounts of scrolling because it doesn't take advantage of the width of
the display. Whether it's a small 10-inch display where vertical space
is limited or a large 20-inch display where horizontal space is
plentiful, this layout just doesn't take advantage.

* Filtering just looks really unclear IMO. Not a fan.

* The animation here isn't meaningful to me. It says I'm opening a
new window and then it doesn't. The swipe animation we had before
made more sense because it gives the user a path to follow back: The
swipe animation implies a multi-touch gesture and I think it would
make sense to have a consistent back/forward swipe gesture in
elementary future with the use of NavigationBox.

* At this point in the development cycle, we need to not introduce
such drastic changes that could introduce new problems. The focus
should be on stability, the time for new features and experimental was
supposed to end with feature freeze.

etc, etc.

Obviously this isn't for Luna, but I think it's really
nice, and we can switch (heh) to it in L+1.

Re: [Elementary-dev-community] Switchboard Restructure

2012-11-20 Thread Alfredo Hernández
It's great, but AFAIK any developer can program their very own plug to
integrate it with Switchboard. If this is true, I think that eventually
Switchboard may be a pain with external plugs --which is unlikely to happen
in the current layout. mode.

Anyway, I prefer this new layout, it's classier.

Regards, Alfredo.

2012-11-20 Thread Hashem Nasarat
I prefer reading left-to-right rather than top-to-bottom:

Category
ItemItemItem ...
_
Category
ItemItemItem ...

rather than
Category | Category
Item | Item
Item | Item
Item | Item

I find it easier to parse and less distracting.
