A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

Should have been in quotes, since it's a citation (from Ralph Waldo

Another instance of foolish consistency.
In writing code, consistency is often useful.
In an email, it is much less important.

inconsistent childish MS bashing

2007-01-05 Thread Chris Moore
I just noticed the following text in the docstring for buffer-file-type:

This variable is meaningful on MS-DOG and Windows NT

If we're going to refer to MS-DOS as MS-DOG, shouldn't we demonstrate
that we're consistent in our childishness by also referring to Windows
as Windoze or Winblows?

Alternatively we could use the proper grown up names MS-DOS and
Windows NT.

Or on the other hand, we could just relax and think about something
important, like the latest cricket scores in Botswana.

True.

But FWIW, I also dislike the childish MS-DOG moniker every time I
stumble upon it in Emacs.

P.S.: Don't you agree this reflects badly upon us?

I would suggest using 8.3 or FILENAME.EXT where appropriate
instead of MS-DO[GS] filenames, for instance:

  C:\bin\emacs\HEAD\lisp\finder.el
 ;; MS-DOG-type filenames.

Being grown up is definitely not one of our goals.

Also, we don't have to be consistent in our childishness.
