Re: German Equipment Safety Law

1998-04-30 Thread Art Michael
Hello Richard,

Although the following is not a direct answer to your query, it
appears to be relevant to your interest/s.

In the current issue of TUV Rheinland's newsletter "World News"
(March-April 1998) on page 5 there appears an article titled, "New German
Law Closes Gaps". Therein it is stated, "Germany is enforcing a new
product safety law, made effective August 1, 1997, entitled, "Law to
Regulate the Safety Requirements for Products and Preservation of the CE
Marking" (translated).

It further states, "This law, which implements both a European Union (EU)
Directive and the Product Liability Law of 1989, closes remaining gaps
among the product-specific safety laws, such as the Pharmaceutical, Food,
or Equipment Safety Laws (GS Law)."

Shelly,
Do we know the most probable failure mode. We might get this information
from the supplier of the PS.
Richard Haynes

P.S. I have included a copy of this e-mail to one of the leading experts in
the Field of Accelerated Testing: Tony Chan at AT&T Bell Labs.

My copy of the Equipment Safety Law has a revision date of 1980. Does anyone
have a later revision or can verify that the 1980 revision is the current
revision?

RE: LEDs and the Laser standard - question

1998-04-30 Thread Peter Tarver
Heber -

This may depend on who's doing the certification of your equipment. I've
heard of certain agencies ignoring faceplate LEDs, but not yet of any
wanting to test. According to Jerome Dennis of the CDRH (at the 1997
International Laser Safety Conference), discussions at the IEC TC76 meetings
indicated acceptance of manufacturers' data sheets as an acceptable means to
determine compliance. This may, however, require conversion of units from
candela or lux to units consistent with IEC825-1.

ISO Standard for SI units (Metric Directive)

1998-04-30 Thread Russell, Ray
Greetings,

Thanks to all who have provided information on the metric directive.
As I was researching this issue, I went back to the FAQ by Bill Lyons.
What a great resource. However, I was not able to find the standard
that would be used to comply with the directives. Could someone please
forward the standard number that spells out the metric units of
measurements?

BTW I sent an email to NIST (from the information supplied by this
group) and here was Mr. McCracken's response:

Mr. Russell,

At this time no meeting is scheduled to discuss the EU metric-only
directive. The EU technical staff has proposed a ten year delay of
the
directive. Until we know more on the subject a meeting is not
warranted.

We will continue to make information available.

Jim McCracken

Thank you for your assistance,

Ray Russell
