Philosophy for old designs with new requirements.

2000-06-19 Thread Don_MacArthur

I would appreciate some feedback on the following:

Let's say I have several existing designs which meet the requirements for CE
Marking today (EMC & Safety). What is the requirement for these existing
designs when a new standard comes out, let's say six months from now?

I think the older designs must be re-designed to meet the new requirements or
not be sold into the EU. Is this true? What ammunition is out there for me to
prove this fact to the higher-ups?

Thank you,
Don

SLIM

2000-06-19 Thread Gail Birdsall

Greetings Colleagues,

We heard form a reliable source who attended the June meeting of the EU
Commission on the SLIM Initiative, of discussions to limit the certification
of product family EMC standards to notified (competent?) bodies. If this is
true, it would effectively close the self testing and certification route
for manufacturers required to test to product specific EMC Standards. We
understand that, possibly the Generic Standards route would still be left
open to manufacturers who wish to self declare.

As you all know, currently where product specific standards exist, they
supercede the Generic Standards. My company has spent hundreds of thousand
of dollars on EMC equipment and facilities to enable us to test and self
declare our products. We originally tested and certified to the Generic
Emissions Immunity Standards, but have recently switched to EN61326:97
AM1:98. If the above action is true, it would seem to be big victory and
financial windfall for EU test laboratories and designates. At the same
time, it would be a terrible blow to both EU and US manufacturers who
invested heavily in test capability to self declare their products.

Does anyone know of the validity of the SLIM action to require testing of
product specific standards such as EN 61326 by Notified bodies? It has
always been my understanding that the SLIM Initiative was to make things
easier not more complicated and expensive by requiring 3rd party testing.
Can anyone tell me if it is truly the plan of the EU Commission to take away
self testing and declaration? We have heard that the new EMC Directive
incorporating the SLIM Initiative recommendations may be out as early as the
end of the year.

Thank-you for your input/s

Gail Birdsall
Hach Co.

VBS.Stages.A virus info

2000-06-19 Thread Rich Nute

Here is some info from the Symantec web site about the
virus apparently distributed by EMC-PSTC listsever:

VBS.Stages.A

This worm appears as an attachment titled LIFE_STAGES.TXT.SHS.
Execution of this attachment will open a text file in Notepad
displaying the male and female stages of life. While the user
is reading the text file the script is executing in the background.
This worm spreads itself using Outlook, ICQ, mIRC and PIRCH.

SARC suggests that corporate customers configure their email
filtering systems to filter out or stop all incoming emails
that have attachments with .SHS extensions.

Beta quality definitions for this worm are available here.

Also known as: IRC/Stages.worm, Life_Stages Worm

Category: Worm
Infection length: 39,936 bytes

Virus definitions: Certified definitions pending.

Hello Peter & all,

regarding Brazil, for telecom & radio equipment
subject to
ANATEL approval, a new scheme is going to be adopted in short (it
was
scheduled for final May). In this new scheme, draft regulations
containing
safety & emc requirements were also published.

On one side, EMC draft includes both radiated and
conducted
emission requirements, EMI and strength requirements, based on IEC
and CISPR
standards with some modifications. On the other side, electrical
safety
draft contains protection requirements against acoustic shock, fire
risk,
electrical shock and overheating, based on IEC and ITU standards.
However,
they are less restrictive and do not cover some important issues as
mechanical strength, protective earthing or information to be
included in
the users and operations manual.

For other goods, as far as I know, there exists
voluntary
standards based on standards from the Brazilian Standardisation Body
(ABNT).
EMC standards are based on CISPR standards. Regarding safety, some
comments
were sent to this list and it seems like Brazil is going to adopt a
similar
scheme for safety as the one adopted in Argentina (harmonisation for
MERCOSUR).

If somebody out there has additional/different info,
I would
appreciate your info/corrections.

Requirements

Hello Peter & all,

regarding Brazil, for telecom & radio equipment subject to
ANATEL approval, a new scheme is going to be adopted in short (it was
scheduled for final May). In this new scheme, draft regulations containing
safety & emc requirements were also published.

On one side, EMC draft includes both radiated and conducted
emission requirements, EMI and strength requirements, based on IEC and CISPR
standards with some modifications. On the other side, electrical safety
draft contains protection requirements against acoustic shock, fire risk,
electrical shock and overheating, based on IEC and ITU standards. However,
they are less restrictive and do not cover some important issues as
mechanical strength, protective earthing or information to be included in
the users and operations manual.

For other goods, as far as I know, there exists voluntary
standards based on standards from the Brazilian Standardisation Body (ABNT).
EMC standards are based on CISPR standards. Regarding safety, some comments
were sent to this list and it seems like Brazil is going to adopt a similar
scheme for safety as the one adopted in Argentina (harmonisation for
MERCOSUR).

If somebody out there has additional/different info, I would
appreciate your info/corrections.

Bye for now,
