Take a look at the models offered by Intusoft
http://www.intusoft.com/Models.htm , and look for the 'Varistors' link.

Also try Littelfuse. They now own the Harris/GE varistor product line:
http://www.littelfuse.com/
Do a search for the LA product series. There's a link at the bottom of the
page for the SPICE models.

Centralized DC power systems

2000-10-13 Thread Gary McInturff

Confused and missing something pretty basic here, I think.
As I look at the diagrams in annex NAB for UL 1950 or UL60950 I am
pretty confused.
What it appears to show me is a floating system -48 and -48
reference lines into the power supply system. Do I really have to float my
circuit boards etc, (ungrounded SELV?), and use the -48 reference line as
the return path rather than chassis and its bonding wire (grounded SELV).
Logic and chassis are not tied togeather until after a considerable distance
down the line?
Am I stairing into the obvious and missing the point?
Heavy sigh
Gary

Ratification of EN 61000-3-2 A14

2000-10-13 Thread CE-test - Gert Gremmen Ing. - CE-mark & more ...
The following was published yesterday by CENELEC:

  PRESS RELEASE 12 October 2000

CENELEC HAS JUST RATIFIED ESSENTIAL CHANGES TO ITS STANDARDS COVERING
ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY

Industry has been lobbying for a long time for publication of essential
changes to EN 61000-3-2 which gives a presumption of conformity to the EMC
Directive. At its Technical Board meeting on the 4th October, the necessary
amendment was ratified for publication by the end of the year.

During its meeting in Lucerne (October 3-5), the 105th CENELEC Technical
Board ratified the amendment A14 to the standard EN 61000-3-2:1995
“Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) – Part 3-2: Limits – Limits for
harmonic current emissions (equipment input current up to and including 16A
per phase)”.

The following implementation dates were fixed:

Date of ratification: 2000-10-03

Date of announcement: 2000-12-01

Date of publication: 2001-01-01

Date of withdrawal: 2004-01-01

The rapid availability of EN 61000-3-2:1995/A14 to the National Committees
will be ensured as well as the urgent transmission of the EN reference to
the European Commission for immediate publication in the Official Journal
under the heading of the EMC Directive.

With the present decision, it is ensured that from the first of January 2001
the relevant products will have the possibility of choice to benefit from
the presumption of conformity to the essential requirements of the EMC
Directive by complying either with the specifications laid down in the EN,
or those of the EN as modified by its amendment 14 and this up to the first
of January 2004. After this date only the latter configuration will apply.
This will be welcomed by many industrial circles and manufacturers
associations.

CENELEC, (the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), has
the institutional responsibility and authority in application of the
European Commission Directive 98/34/EC for proposing, adopting and editing
the European electrotechnical standards for products and services brought on
the European Market. CENELEC adopts the required standards, in co-operation
with the IEC, ETSI and CEN. CENELEC also seeks to co-ordinate voluntary
certification and testing schemes for electrotechnology. CENELEC
deliverables are European Standards (EN), Harmonization Documents (HD), or
European Pre-Standards (ENV), Reports and European Specification (ES). When
European standards deviate from International standards, they do so via
common modifications. These achievements create a unified and open market
for the whole world.

RE: A1 of EN61000-4-3

2000-10-13 Thread WOODS

Good question. This does appear to be a problem. It appears that the dates
for the Basic standards, when they are first published, are set by their
adoption in the Generic, Family and Product standards. Therefore the DOP and
DOW of those higher level standards govern when we must use the Basic
standards for the first time. But the Commission has no means to tell us
when we may (DOP) or must (DOW) adopt any revisions to those referenced
Basic standards. It appears then that we should follow the DOP and DOW
published in the revisions of the Basic standards.

RE: DC circuits

2000-10-13 Thread Joe Finlayson

Scott,

My experience of going through a IEC 60950/UL 1950/CSA 950
evaluation with a -48VDC powered product resulted in the following. The
entire box was treated as a SELV circuit requiring Operational Insulation.
UL does not necessarily require dielectric testing for Operational
Insulation. I used method (c) to comply with the requirements in section
5.4.4. Per UL PAG 5.4.4-001, there was no short circuit testing required as
the PCB was rated 94V-0, as are most PCB's these days. The beauty of this
was that no dielectric testing was required and therefore no production line
testing.

Thx,

Joe

RE: Color coding for U.S. 3 phase

2000-10-13 Thread Peter Tarver
Kurt -

Except under special circumstances, the USNEC does not use color coding for
phase conductors. There are reserved insulation colors for ground (green,
with one or more yellow stripes) and for neutral (white or "natural gray"
[whatever that is]). Otherwise, your free to use whatever color you find
aesthetically pleasing, provided there is no confusion about what conductor
should connect to where. If your product requires a particular phase
ordering, this should be identified on a wiring diagram and labeling of the
connection points.

RE: A1 of EN61000-4-3

2000-10-13 Thread WOODS

IMHO a Basic standard has a dow. The Generic, Product or Family standard may
indicate that the undated reference to the Basic standard includes the
latest version including any amendments. The dow in the revision or
amendment provides guidance as to the latest possible effectivity date of
that revision or amendment.

I do not think that "basic" standards have DOWs. I believe that they
become
effective when they are called out by a "higher" standard.

Hi,

I don't have a copy of A1 of EN61000-4-3 at hand. Please help me.
(1) let me know when is the DOW of A1 for EN61000-4-3?
(2) confirm the difference of A1 and ENV50204.
  A1: 800 - 960 MHz, and 1.4 - 2.0 GHz.
  ENV50204: 900 MHz at 200Hz/50%.

Thank you.

RE: EN50107

2000-10-13 Thread Colgan, Chris

According to BSI, the title of EN50107 is
"Signs and luminous-discharge-tube installations operating from a no-load
rated output voltage exceeding 1 kV but not exceeding 10 kV"
which looks like a standard applying to luminous advertising installations
and the like.

Dear members,

Regarding the European standards in the ENV-series, ENV50140 / 50141 / 50142,

I've heard different versions across and I'd like to hear your opinion.
