RE: Typing Shortcuts

2001-06-13 Thread Gary McInturff

Funny how history sort of repeats itself. If there are any ol' morse code
senders out their, this should start looking like the Z and Q messages
that were sent as abbreviations.
qrk qsl qrl meant do you have any messages for me, I am caught up
and have to traffic for you. This may be the wrong letters its been many
years since I have used any but it still should suffice as an example. My
favorite was ZBM2 which asked if you were flying in a cloud cover. Generally
sent as an insult.

Useful Typing Shortcuts

2001-06-13 Thread Scott Lacey

To the group,

While the thread Re:Typing Shortcuts is quite interesting and
entertaining, there is a typing shortcut that is very useful when typing
test reports. Instead of repeatedly typing some long title such as Really
Big Widget you just type RBW throughout the report. Later you you use the
word processor's search and replace function to substitute the actual text.
I find that it saves me hundreds of keystrokes in a typical report.

RE: Detachable AC Cordset Selection for the EU

2001-06-13 Thread MCBAIN,JOHN (HP-Cupertino,ex3)

Hi Paul --

For practical purposes you have two voltage/current ranges: 100-127V @ max.
12A (if we're including Japan and Mexico) and 200-240V @ max. 10A. You
need to make sure that the ratings of appliance coupler, the cordage and the
plug meet the local requirements, and that you have any required
certifications.

If the appliance coupler is rated 15A in all the countries that use
100-127V, and rated 10A in all the ones that use 200-240V, you're done with
that part of the problem. (Of course, you might not be so lucky.) Good
luck with the remaining 3 aspects of the power cord qualification.

Subject: Detachable AC Cordset Selection for the EU

Hello group,

I am in the process of specifying detachable AC cordsets for European
distribution of my product. It uses an autoranging power supply
(100-240VAC) and is rated for 12 A max with a C14 appliance coupler. I
initially thought this would be a trivial task of matching plug and
connector variations for each of the EU countries and specifying a 12 A
cord. However, it looks like all the cordsets that are generally available
with European connectors are rated for 10 A max. I am also lead to believe
that the C14 coupler is rated for 15A in North America, but only 10 amps in
Europe. Are electrons hotter on the east side of the pond??

Amongst my circle of compliance peers, there seems to be a difference of
opinion as to what current rating the cordset should have. I would think
that the current rating of any cordset I choose for Europe would need to be
rated for 12A (Better safe than sorry, right?). But half of the people I've
talked to say, But why? The current will be about half of the 12A max, or
6 amps, due to the higher line voltage. And after all, the mains voltage
should be within 10% of nominal!! Therefore a 10A cordset is plenty good!

If I had my way, I would special order a 12A cordset (And I guess this would
change my appliance coupler?). But, it would be nice if I could buy an
off-the-shelf 10A cordset because of pricing and availability issues.

Any comments?

Thanks in advance,

Paul Hare

RE: Detachable AC Cordset Selection for the EU

2001-06-13 Thread georgea

My old Feller catalog shows a Euro plug rated 16A-250V.
It is listed as Type VII G, CEE (7) VII, 16A-250V. It is a three
wire (Class I) variety, with two male pins and a female ground
socket.

Since Feller (HQ in Austria) produces line cord sets, I would
guess there are 16A line cord sets available for Europe.

RE: Detachable AC Cordset Selection for the EU

2001-06-13 Thread WOODS

Change the current rating to be 12-X A, where X is the current rating at
240V. See Clause 1.7.1 of EN60950. Now you must pick a set of cords that
comply with the various sets of voltage and current ratings. A 10A cord will
be just fine for the 200-240V portion of the range.

Hello group,

I am in the process of specifying detachable AC cordsets for
European
distribution of my product. It uses an autoranging power supply
(100-240VAC) and is rated for 12 A max with a C14 appliance coupler.
I
initially thought this would be a trivial task of matching plug and
connector variations for each of the EU countries and specifying a
12 A
cord. However, it looks like all the cordsets that are generally
available
with European connectors are rated for 10 A max. I am also lead to
believe
that the C14 coupler is rated for 15A in North America, but only 10
amps in
Europe. Are electrons hotter on the east side of the pond??

Amongst my circle of compliance peers, there seems to be a
difference of
opinion as to what current rating the cordset should have. I would
think
that the current rating of any cordset I choose for Europe would
need to be
rated for 12A (Better safe than sorry, right?). But half of the
people I've
talked to say, But why? The current will be about half of the 12A
max, or
6 amps, due to the higher line voltage. And after all, the mains
voltage
should be within 10% of nominal!! Therefore a 10A cordset is plenty
good!

If I had my way, I would special order a 12A cordset (And I guess
this would
change my appliance coupler?). But, it would be nice if I could buy
an
off-the-shelf 10A cordset because of pricing and availability
issues.

Any comments?

Thanks in advance,

RE: Detachable AC Cordset Selection for the EU

2001-06-13 Thread mkelson

My knee-jerk guess is that you won't be able to find a higher rated cord for
Europe. If you do though, it would be nice to know who the vendor is. 10
Amps @ ~200V provides about 2000W. Does your product use this much power?

If you really need a rating above 10 Amps, you might consider using a 16A,
IEC-309 type plug.

If I had my way, I would special order a 12A cordset (And I guess this would
change my appliance coupler?). But, it would be nice if I could buy an
off-the-shelf 10A cordset because of pricing and availability issues.

Any comments?

Thanks in advance,

Paul Hare

Surge Testing of Class II (ungrounded) products

2001-06-13 Thread Chris Maxwell

Hi all,

Most immunity standards that I've seen (I work from EN 61326-1 in
particular) specify a requirement for Line to Line and Line to Ground
surges on the AC power lines. Typically, the line to ground test limit is
twice as high as the line to line test limit.

What is typically done with ungrounded products? Is it.

Choice A: All combinations of Line to Line and Line to Ground are tested
even though the unit does not connect to the ground pin?

Choice B: Only Line to Line surges are applied?

I've read through EN 50142 (the BS version of IEC 1000-4-5); and it really
doesn't specify either way.

My basic instincts tell me that choice B is correct because, if there's no
ground connection to complete the line-ground surge circuit; then there's no
surge .

But, one could reason that choice A is correct by saying that in real life,
ungrounded products will be subjected to line to ground surge potentials
even if they don't connect to ground. Such products, if poorly designed
could have an insulation breakdown between line and ground under the surge
potential, or they could be affected by the common mode components of the
surge.

Anybody care to help interpret, reason out or better yet, quote chapter and
verse from a standard that would answer this question?

Thanks,

RE: EN55022 Radiated Test Set up

2001-06-13 Thread Michael Peters

Alex,

Clause 10.2.1 of CISPR 22:1997 states that:

Measurements of the radiated field shall be made with the antenna located
at the horizontal distance from the boundary of the EUT as specified in
Clause 6 (ie 3 or 10 meters). The boundary of the EUT is defined by an
imaginary straight-line periphery describing a simple geometric
configuration encompassing the EUT. All ITE intersystem cables and
connecting ITE shall be included within the boundary.

Draw a square or a circle that that just encompasses your equipment under
test. The antenna to EUT distance is the closest edge of the boundary. The
test lab probably should move the antenna to meet this distance, however it
is customary to use the table top configuration as typical and use the
closest edge of the table as the measurement distance.

ANSI C63.4:1992 has a similar guideline in which it specifies the closest
periphery of the EUT.

Subject: EN55022 Radiated Test Set up

Hi Guys,

I have a query regarding how the 3M or 10M emissions set up should be
measured.

EMC Test Houses seem to appply the measurement of the 3M/10M differently
e.g. measurement can be to the front (or rear) edge of the EUT, peripherals
and cables setup with Turntable at 0 degrees. This means that at some point
during Turntable revolutions the EUT will violate the 3M or 10M rule i.e.
the EUT with peripherals and cables will be less than the initial measured
distance during turntable movement.
Should the 3M/10M be measured to the periphery of the EUT after monitoring
the turntable revolution? This would mean that during Turntable movement the
3M or 10M is not violated with peripherals or cables, but also that the
centre of the setup is always more than 3M/10M.

Any Ideas or better still any simply explained documents (for all EMC test
procedures) that spells this out very precisely.

Best Regards
Alex McNeil

would help (floppy disk, color screen, digital features, etc ...)
But the technical support is very desirable, and will be considered with
careful in the final decision.

Suggestions of any other analyser (up to 3GHz) will be welcome.
I think it would be better to send it only to my e-mail.

Thanks a lot.

Fellows

I am looking for a spectrum analyzer for EMC pre-compliance.
The Agilent E7401A is an option we are studying.

Does someone have any comments about this equipment ?
Did someone have experiences with this analyser, and want to share some
good or bad aspects ?

Thank you all

RE: EN55022 Radiated Test Set up

2001-06-13 Thread ari . honkala

Hi,
CISPR 22 clause 10.2.1 and Figure 2 really say
that you should move antenna back and forth to maintain
the specified distance. Words straight-line periphery
are selected.
However, if this variation is e.g. 0.5 m the effect to the field strength at
10 m is only about half a dB so probably there's nothing to worry.
I have never seen anyone moving the antenna in practise.
regards,
Ari Honkala

 Hi Guys,

I have a query regarding how the 3M or 10M emissions set up should be
 measured.

EMC Test Houses seem to appply the measurement of the 3M/10M
 differently
e.g. measurement can be to the front (or rear) edge of the
 EUT, peripherals
and cables setup with Turntable at 0 degrees. This means that
 at some point
during Turntable revolutions the EUT will violate the 3M or
 10M rule i.e.
the EUT with peripherals and cables will be less than the
 initial measured
 distance during turntable movement.
Should the 3M/10M be measured to the periphery of the EUT
 after monitoring
the turntable revolution? This would mean that during
 Turntable movement the
3M or 10M is not violated with peripherals or cables, but
 also that the
centre of the setup is always more than 3M/10M.

Any Ideas or better still any simply explained documents (for
 all EMC test
procedures) that spells this out very precisely.

RE: EN61000-3-2:2000

2001-06-13 Thread WOODS

You can find all of the official versions and amendments and their DOA, DOP
and DOW at the CENELEC web site.
http://www.cenelec.org/BASIS/celis/free/project/SF
http://www.cenelec.org/BASIS/celis/free/project/SF
You will find that the 2000 version has a DOW of 2004-01-01 which means that
the 1995 version and its amendments may be used until that time. However, as
you have noticed, it may be difficult to find and order the older version.
Try searching other suppliers of standards for the 1995 version if that is
the version you wish to use.

Hi all

I got a question about the correct standard version of EN61000-3-2.

According to OJ, the standard that can be used is either

EN61000-3-2 : 1995 + A1 + A2 + A14

However when I verify the version I have from BSI, it is EN61000-3-2

Right now I have difficulties to order the correct one. What I mean

RE: En60065 7th edition

2001-06-13 Thread Colgan, Chris

John

Thanks for the reply.

There is discussion within our company about removing power switches from
our newer products. The current standard allows us to do this as they can
be switched on and off via a rear panel comms bus connection (ie data link).

My specific questions are:

a) will the 7th draft allow us to do this?

b) will the 7th draft remove the anomaly that requires a product to have a
mechanical switch unless it has a data link or timer function? I have
always thought this to be crazy, either all products should have switches or
none at all.
For example,
Amplifier with power relay operated by front panel tact switch via
microprocessor - not allowed
Amplifier with power relay operated by data link (used or not) via
microprocessor - allowed

c) does the 7th edition define what off is? Eg apparatus does not
function, apparatus consumes less than 15W, mains power is disconnected etc.

Out of interest, how are BSI or IEC committees formed? Are members invited
to join or do you apply?

Don't bother; they were never issued as such. Amendments with a single
number reference are those originated in IEC. Amendments with a number
between 11 and 19 were originated in CENELEC. A12 and A13 were
effectively overtaken by IEC amendments before they were finalized.

BSI then further confuses the issue by numbering amendments in series,
irrespective of where they originated. So CENELEC A14 is BS Amendment 4,
but it could have been Amendment [any number].

Could someone help me out on this? Where can I get the correct version
besides
BSI? What is this 2000 version? Can I use this 2000 version?

You could, but it doesn't include A14, which you may well find not
helpful. A14 effectively relaxes requirements for many products.

This whole mix-up is due to a series of wrong decisions in CENELEC,
which people were warned about but made anyway. Use the 1995 edition
with the three amendments.

Unless you are making kitchen machines.

Later this year, the 2000 edition will be amended to include a very
slightly differently-worded A14, exactly as the IEC version will be.
