RE: EMC Directive Applicability to Mother Boards

2009-06-25 Thread emc-p...@ieee.org
Really? I sure don’t! :-)

Exactly how does a PC Motherboard manufacturer demonstrate compliance to the
EMC directive?

Again, thanks for all the responses. I have a pretty good understanding now
of how the Directive applies to components & sub-assemblies.

Subject: EMC Directive Applicability to Mother Boards

Does a PC motherboard by itself fall under the scope of the EMC Directive?
Article 2, paragraph 2(a) states that for the purposes of the Directive, the
following is deemed an apparatus: "components" or "sub-assemblies" intended
for incorporation into an apparatus by the end user, which are liable to
generate electromagnetic disturbance, or the performance of which is liabile
to be affected by such disturbance.

Therefore, I think a PC motherboard (or any other commercially available PC
board) falls under the Directive. Am I correct?

A prEN is an unapproved draft, so only a member of the relevant CEN
committee is likely to have a copy.

A Google search suggests that maybe the standard was never approved. It
may be that sections of EN 60335-2 cover the subject adequately.

The prEN never made it to full EN status, but there is instead EN ISO
14159:2004 (and now :2008) "Safety of machinery. Hygiene requirements
for the design of machinery".

Type C food machinery standards tend to include hygiene requirements.

I have a copy of prEN 1672-1 if you really need to know what is says.

Nick.
