Thanks! Both are quite old documents - over 10 years. Is there any latest
progress?

Scott

Understand the mains voltage is changed to 230 Vac after EU community was
established. The temporary tolerance is +/- 10% during the alignment of
voltage. What is the progress to go back to +/- 6%?

Re: [PSES] Mains voltage in Europe

2012-03-20 Thread Pete Perkins
Scott et al,

As an outsider my recollection is that the decision to move from
220V in Continental Europe and 240V in the UK was enthusiastically voted in.

The implementatin was scheduled to be a one volt change per year
with both partine coming together after 10 years with a harmonized 220V
everywhere.

The Continental Europeean change seemed to proceed smoothly. I
don't know of any issues. The UK change seemed in trouble from the
beginning; uncertainty reigned. After a couple of years the UK gave up
trying and abandoned the agreement to change the voltage.

So now the Euro voltage is 230V everywhere except in the UK which is
still 240V.

Some European folks may have a better story but, I believe, the
result is as presented here.

The lesson learned here is that the system characteristics are
deeply embedded in the infrastructure and changing something as basic as the
voltage is anathema and plunges folks into an abyss from which they cannot
recover (at least for islands).

Don't hold your breath, Scott, awaiting this to get resolved.

Perhaps someone would like to recommend that we change to a common
frequency. I'd bet North Americans would like the rest of the world to
adopt the more reasonable value of 60 Hz since it's tied directly to the way
our clocks work.

Not by Britain; we resisted for several years before a certain
government official capitulated.

The implementatin was scheduled to be a one volt change per year

That simply isn't practicable and I don't see any reason to do it.

Well, it's within 230 V +10 % most of the time in most places, but only
a relatively few supplies were actually reduced: these were supplies to
long rural feeders, where the voltage near the substation was high.

I don't think there is any chance of the tolerance going back to +/-6%.
It would be expensive and probably not bring any significant advantages.

[PSES] Northeast Product Safety Society Meeting Wednesday, March 28th

2012-03-20 Thread Matthew Campanella

All,

There will be a Northeast Product Safety Society / CNEC
Product Safety Engineering Society meeting on Wednesday, March 28th, at the
Holiday Inn, Boxborough MA.  A social hour
with light refreshments will begin at 7:00 PM and the technical meeting will
start at 7:30 PM.  Bob Johnson ill be
presenting a talk about temperature measurement and product certification with
regard to thermal safety risks..  If you will be in
the area, please feel free to join us as advanced notice or membership in NPSS
or IEEE PSES is not required.

Bob has worked in the product safety field for over 30 years at Digital
Equipment Corporation, Motorola, and currently as a consultant product safety
engineer. He has participated in the development of product safety standards
for information technology equipment IEC 60950, the new hazard based standard
IEC 62368 and on several other standards technical panels. He is a member of
National Electrical Code Making Panel 12.

If you or anyone
you know would like to give a product safety technical presentation, please
contact Tony Nikolassy by email at a.nikola...@yahoo.com.  A technical
presentation should be 45 to 60 minutes
in duration and be related to product safety.
Although the presentation may reference your company and it’s services,
the presentation must not be simply company advertising.  We would also
appreciate any slides or
handout materials be made available for posting on the NPSS web site.
Releasing presentation materials for posting
is desired but not a requirement to make a presentation.

The 2012 NPSS
meeting schedule is available on the NPSS website at
http://www.nepss.net/calendar.html.

Further information about the Northeast Product Safety Society and how
to become a member is available at http://www.nepss.net.  You can also contact
one of the NPSS officers
via links on the NPSS web site.

Directions:

From Route 495 North or South, take Exit 28 to Route 111 East

Turn right onto Adams Place

[PSES] Certification Labels in Software

2012-03-20 Thread EMC-PSTC
Hello Everyone:
Is there some sort of general understanding of being able to put certification
labels in a product's GUI a la iPhone? These would be in addition to marks and
their explanations in the equipment manual(s).

I know that labels required for safety have to be placed on the outside of the
equipment. So, what I'm discussing are things like C-Tick and A-Tick, WEEE,
China RoHS, ANATEL, etc. Has there been pushback from any agencies?

Thanks,
John
