[PSES] Any 'official' opnions on Laboratiry Equipment Machinery?

2013-12-23 Thread Crane, Lauren
Dear Experts,

I am now facing a decision that had until now been nicely absent from my
work Is a *slightly* mechanical piece of laboratory equipment (a microscope
with an automated stage) a machine in scope of the MD?

I have reviewed the archived PSTC discussions about fans, and similar threads
on LinkedIn.

This is how I summarize them

1. "small mechanicals" fall within the definition of Machine in the MD.

2. The MD specifically excludes 6 types of products that potentially also
have "small mechanicals" in article 1.2.k, but none of these are "laboratory
equipment".

3. The MD specifically excludes machinery where the hazards referred to
in Annex I are wholly or partly covered more specifically by other Community
Directives.

4. It is reasonably arguable that lab equipment with "small mechanicals"
are specifically covered by the LVD.

5. The LVD references mechanical hazards in its essential requirements.

6. 61010-1 (an LVD listed standard) addresses mechanical hazard issues
relevant to "small mechanicals".

Does anyone know if any significant authorities have weighed in on this
question since it was last addressed in this forum (~July 2011). I have
Googled, and found nothing on which to hang this hat.

Regards,
Lauren

[PSES] Cardboard display stands in store

2013-12-23 Thread Scott Xe
We have a customer requesting 5,000 cardboard display stands with some demo
units in stores. They are used to display and contain the goods for eye
catching purpose. They are not sold to customers. How can we treat such
stands? Consumer products or others? Do they need to comply with LVD, EMC,
RoHS, REACH, etc. like consumer products?

Thanks and regards,

Scott

Good addition John, completely true

I should have written "universal ground"

While most of what you say is true, there IS no 'universal ground', not
even a conducting sheet, if it's bigger in any dimension than about 0.1
wavelengths, and, at lower frequencies, has a surface resistivity larger
than that necessary to reduce the voltage between any two points to a
negligible value. (What is negligible depends on signal levels, of
course.)

The case in this thread is that there was a separate 'chassis plane' in
the stack. In terms of emissions, it's probably misleading to call it
'dirty', but for immunity, it certainly is dirty, because it introduces
into the internal circuits stuff picked up from incident emissions.

With seasonal greetings to all my readers. (;-)
