Re: [PSES] Clarifications for Functional Earthing

2014-01-09 Thread Nyffenegger, Dave
Folks,

I've got a few additional questions in addition to the use of the 5017 symbol.

I've had several consultants/inspectors comment that only a single
earthing/bonding conductor can be attached to each wiring terminal but I can't
find any actual standards calling for this (for PERMANENTLY CONNECTED EQUIPMENT
having a NON-DETACHABLE POWER SUPPLY CORD). Specifically for example putting
multiple bonding conductor ring terminals on a single stud.

The only reference I found is EN 60950-1:2006 2.6.4.3 "Separate wiring
terminals, which may be on the same busbar, shall be provided, one for the
PROTECTIVE EARTHING CONDUCTOR, or one for each PROTECTIVE EARTHING CONDUCTOR if
more than one is provided, and one or more for PROTECTIVE BONDING CONDUCTORS.
However, it is permitted to provide a single wiring terminal of the screw or
stud type in PERMANENTLY CONNECTED EQUIPMENT having a NON-DETACHABLE POWER
SUPPLY CORD, and in PLUGGABLE EQUIPMENT having a special NON-DETACHABLE POWER
SUPPLY CORD, provided that the wiring termination of the PROTECTIVE EARTHING
CONDUCTOR is separated by a nut from that of the PROTECTIVE BONDING CONDUCTORS.
The order of stacking of the terminations of the PROTECTIVE EARTHING CONDUCTOR
and the PROTECTIVE BONDING CONDUCTORS is not specified."

This specifically does allow multiple bonding conductors attached to a single
stud.Does anyone know of any standards restricting individual bonding
conductors to separate terminals (for PERMANENTLY CONNECTED IT EQUIPMENT having
a NON-DETACHABLE POWER SUPPLY CORD)?

Small motors (AC/DC fractional HP, 1,2,3 HP etc) typically have an integrated
wiring junction box which includes a dedicated chassis ground screw inside.
If such a motor is mounted to a bonded frame is necessary to connect a
protective bonding conductor to the provided ground screw? Are there any
specific standards that cover this or is it dependent on the motor
specifications/construction file?

Thanks
-Dave

Rich,

thanks for the input. I guess I need to be clear if I'm asking about
construction identification vs. schematic drawings. I'm not hung up on
physically identifying any functional earth connections (to GRN/YEL terminal
blocks) inside the actual hardware, these can be identified with approved
insulation color and/or other appropriate labeling. My question with regards
to function earth identification is primarily on the schematics. For example,
which symbol to use to represent that functional earth connection to the
GRN/YEL terminal block. Not 5019 or 5017 and I think not 5020. So that leaves
perhaps 5018 Noiseless (clean) earth (ground) or 5021 Equipotentiality. Can
anyone else cite any standards or examples relevant to using these symbols for
functional earth connections?

You stated "Since you have quoted 60950-1, you cannot use the 5017 symbol ".
Can you clarify this? EN 60950-1:2006 1.7.7.1 states "It is not a requirement
to mark terminals for PROTECTIVE BONDING CONDUCTORS, but where such terminals
are marked, the symbol (IEC 60417-5017 (DB:2002-10)) shall be used." and 2.6.2
states " − wiring terminals to be used only for FUNCTIONAL EARTHING shall not
be marked by the symbol (60417-IEC-5017) or by the symbol (60417-IEC-5019),
except that, where a wiring terminal is provided on a component (for example, a
terminal block) or subassembly, the symbol [5017] is permitted; "

Since 5019 is used (once) for the main protective earth connection my question
was to clarify that 5017 could/should be used on schematics to show all of the
protective bonding connections.

Yes.

In my opinion, you don't need any marking to connect a functional earth
conductor to a DIN GRN/YEL terminal block.

[PSES] Modem EMC testing

2014-01-09 Thread Chris Wells
I have a product where we added a Multitech modem module as per their
examples and ran it through UL/CUL safety evaluation already.

I am looking for some advice on a clean way to do EMC testing on this POTS
Modem interface.

Both emissions (looking for FCC class B) and immunity to IEC61326

I have never evaluated a modem before.

I assume there is a way to simulate a POTS interface and isolate my aux
monitoring equipment .

Any feedback would be appreciated.

A safety briefing won't help if a 400 lb EUT slips off the turntable on
to your foot. I think emergency stops are not only reasonable but would
be required by law in some jurisdictions, and I don't see any EMC
issues. Flashing lights are another matter; EMC issues exist and
implementation is not as easy as for emergency stops.

Can you show that the applicable human exposure limits cannot anywhere
be exceeded with the max amplifier and antenna?

Re: [PSES] Risk Assessments and mitigation for EMC chambers

2014-01-09 Thread Pettit, Ghery
Labs I've built in the past have an interlock on the door(s) to shut down RF to
the antennas and/or amplifiers when the doors are unlatched. Lights at the
control point show the status (red - open, green - closed). The turntables
were interlocked to the hatch for access to the turntable pit. With the hatch
open, no turntable rotation.

Client has performed risk assessment for turntables and high RF fields in their
anechoic chambers and is looking at implementing emergency stops for the former
and flashing lights warning of the later. (I've never seen flashing lights at
other labs whilst witnessing tests up to 350 V/m, and the client chamber will
only be used with amps < 250 W).

The turntable is not flush to the floor, so does present more hazard than some,
and some operation does require people to be on or adjacent to the turntable
for operation/maintenance.

There is already plenty of good "process" and supporting documentation and
everyone with access to the chambers have already been through a thorough
safety briefing.
Anyone have any documents or stories to share as to how they have
satisfied/pacified/dismissed enthusiastic Health & Safety officers who still
want to "do something"?

[PSES] Saudi Arabia Wifi 5GHz band used?

2014-01-09 Thread Chris

Folks,

Our software team asked me a DFS band KSA question below which

Question: can
we use 5250-5350MHz and 5470-5745MHz band in KSA as per CITC rules?

CITC document RI045 does reference EN301 893 @ 200 mW e.i.r.p Max mean
for 5250-5350MHz

and 5470-5725MHz band with reference EN301 893 @ 1000mW Max mean

Any KSA info from Wi-Fi manufacturers/test labs/compliance experts would be
helpful and appreciated.

regards

Christopher
