RE: Product standard for telescope

2003-08-28 Thread Brewster, Alan
The answer to this lies in the marketing information for the product. The
target End-Use-Environment drives the choice of standards. If this equipment
is being sold to residential users exclusively then it would not be scientific
equipment. This would rule out EN 61326 and the choice would then be between
the EN 61000-6 set or the EN55014's for household apparatus, for example.
The other possible option is to use the TCF route and define specific criteria
for the telescope based on night-time, outdoor use model of compliance. This
may also have some merit if the manufacturer intends to produce small runs
with multiple options.

Subject: Product standard for telescope

Hi All,

I'm chatting with a client that manufacturers high end telescopes. Not usually
found in Walmart, Currys etc. but they may find their way into richer family
homes. These chaps are great for observing Mars at the moment!

We are trying to decide which EMC product standard may apply for EMC. Would
anyone care to share their opinions?

RE: Origin of power symbols 0 and 1?

2002-10-09 Thread Brewster, Alan

Rich,
I remember asking this question of a senior BS safety committee officer many
years ago. His opinion was that these symbols went back to steam systems
indicating the status of the boiler output i.e. the closed valve or the open
line. He went to great pains to inform me that these were not alphanumeric
and so were not binary states as I had originally thought.
We might all be wrong, however, and these may have as much real meaning as
'CE Marking'.

I am looking for the origin of the power symbols
0 (off) and 1 (on).

The earliest standards that I have are CEE 10
and similar where the standard specifies something
like:

Where a rotary switch is used for power,
the 0 position shall be off and the 1 and
   higher position shall be on.

Do you have the specific wording? Do you have
something earlier than the CEE standards?

Thanks for your help!

Does FCC require that all that information be in the final report.
Such as Product Manufacturer, Table of Contents, Equipment Units

Measurement
Data, Summary of Results...
The reason I ask is that it states that Digital devices ..are to be

say
that it needs to be in the final summary.

RE: Faying

2002-04-01 Thread Brewster, Alan

Greeting fellow vocabularians,

The root word, 'fay is ancient Scottish, meaning to have the power of
prediction. Those of you that are fay may have seen this coming.
I wonder if anticipating grounding is similar to expecting volts.

Subject: Faying

A couple of weeks ago, there was a thread discussing bonding
techniques for
ground studs. I suggested that MIL-B-5087 had some nice drawings
showing
typical accepted military practices. Of course, MIL-B-5087 has been
superseded by MIL-STD-464, but you can still find electronic copies
of
MIL-B-5087.

Jacob Shanker read through all of the 464 sections on Bonding, and
then
asked me if I knew what the term faying meant. It seems that
MIL-STD-464
uses that term without any definition, as if it's a very common
American
English word. IMHO, I consider myself to possess a rather decent
vocabulary.
But faying left me puzzled, even after closely reading the context
of the
several citings in MIL-STD-464. It's certainly not in any common
usage in my
part of the world. I certainly wouldn't want to call something
faying at
any typical US military base. So, off to the dictionary web sites.

1. Britannica says: not found.
2. Merriam Webster says: Main Entry: fay // Pronunciation: 'fA //
Function:
verb
Etymology: Middle English feien, from Old English fEgan; akin to
Old High
German fuogen to fit, Latin pangere to fasten
Date: before 12th century : to fit or join closely or tightly
3. Harcourt's Metallurgy Engineering Dictionary says: faying surface
//
Metallurgy: the interface between two metallic parts that are to be
joined.
4. Finally, turning to Google in desperation for a simple
explanation, I
find pictures at:

http://www.offroaders.com/info/tech-corner/reading/bolt-tension/bolt_tension
.htm

So after all this searching, I find that MIL-STD-464 faying is
just a 12th
Century Old English way to say facing or mating surfaces. I'm
not sure
how he did it, but I suspect John Woodgate is to blame for this.

Ed

Work in progress vs Date of Withdrawal

2002-03-22 Thread Brewster, Alan

Greetings All,
If a vendor is in the process of building equipment and has started the
manufacturing phase before the date on which a standard is superceded, can
the goods still be supplied against the old standard? In particular, the
introduction of EN 61000-6-2 on April 1st will leave some equipment
suppliers with long lead time parts in a quandary over how to declare,
especially if they might not meet the surge and dip requirements.
Is there a published guidance on the treatment of material that is Work in
Progress?

Hi Group, Dec 07,2000
I am in the process of establishing the potential for an injury from
a
hazard.
I can get a reasonable 'expression' to describe the potential for a
hazard
to turn into an accident (event). I am looking for the words that
classifies the degree of an injury. Can some one direct me to some
standard
definitions?
Do we base it on the length of work stoppage? i.e. a minor burn on a
finger
tip smarts for an hour or two. A good shock working with vacuum
tubes, 300V,
slowed you down for the rest of the day and so on.

Has some one worked out a practical scale for the degree of an
injury. It
can be numbers or words as long as they are defined. If it does not
exist
let us generate one that we all agree on.-- or most of us.

When it comes to property damage I think that a monetary replacement
cost
would be expressed in 'small', 'medium', 'large' etc where each is
defined
in 'very' general monetary terms.

Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely
