Northeast Product Safety Society Meeting Next Wednesday, January 28th

2009-01-23 Thread Matt Campanella
All,

NOTE - The NORTHEAST PRODUCT SAFETY SOCIETY has a new web address
WWW.NEPSS.NET. Please make sure you change your shortcuts and links or
you will miss out on all we have to offer!

There will be a Northeast Product Safety Society / CNEC Product Safety
Engineering Society meeting next Wednesday, January 28th, at the Holiday
Inn, Boxborough MA. A social hour with light refreshments will begin
at 7:00 PM and the technical meeting will start at 7:30 PM. Steve
Brody, Sr. Manager of Corporate Product EHS at Brooks Automation will
present this months topic concerning changes in various EU and Chinese
directives. If you will be in the area, please feel free to join us as
advanced notice or membership in NPSS or IEEE PSES is not required.

Steve has been with Brooks Automation for more than two years. Prior to
Brooks Automation he was with Thermo Fisher Scientific (NESLAB
Instruments) as their Manager of Compliance Engineering supporting not
only the local factory in Newington, NH, but also doing contract work
for other Thermo factories worldwide. His total span in the industry
covers some 35 years.

Steves presentation will cover the EU changes in the Machinery
Directive, Low Voltage Directive, WEEE and RoHS Directives. He will
also cover the latest changes in the Chinese RoHS as well as the latest
Joint Industrial Guide, JIG-101. These changes will impact your
products in more ways than one. We have found that Environmental
Compliance very often becomes the responsibility of the Product Safety,
or Regulatory, or Compliance Engineering Groups so this information is
relevant to NPSS and PSES Members. We look forward to having you join
us.

The 2009 NPSS meeting schedule is available on the NPSS website at
http://www.nepss.net/calendar.html.

Further information about the Northeast Product Safety Society and how

Northeast Product Safety Society Meeting Tomorrow, September 24th

2008-09-23 Thread Matt Campanella
All,

There will be a Northeast Product Safety Society / CNEC Product Safety
Engineering Society meeting tomorrow, September 24th, at the Holiday
Inn, Boxborough MA. A social hour with light refreshments will begin
at 7:00 PM and the technical meeting will start at 7:30 PM. Ian
Houseal, Sustainability Consultant with Jacques Whitford Company, will
present this months topic concerning supply chain carbon
footprinting. If you will be in the area, please feel free to join us
as advanced notice or membership in NPSS or IEEE PSES is not required.

Ian Houseal is a sustainability consultant with Jacques Whitford
Company. He leads the companys internal carbon footprint program,
ecological footprint program, and initiatives surrounding sustainable
procurement all steps the company has taken to walk the talk of
sustainability. In this role, Ian is responsible for inventorying and
reporting greenhouse gas emissions (carbon footprinting) to The Climate
Registry for the companys 47 facilities across Canada and the United
States. Jacques Whitford is one of ten founding reporter to The Climate
Registry, reporting emissions for 2007. Before joining the Jacques
Whitford team, Ian worked in the fields of urban planning, architecture,
and green construction. He holds a Masters degree in Regional Planning,
a Masters degree in Architecture, a Bachelor in Environmental Studies:
Natural Resource Policy and Management, and is a LEED accredited
professional.

Ians topic is Taking the Next Step Forward: Supply Chain Carbon
Footprinting. As we move into a carbon-constrained world, reducing
carbon emissions and mitigating climate change is becoming a driving
issue for forward thinking businesses. Some companies have stayed ahead
of the coming carbon regulation and manage carbon emissions in their
facilities through greenhouse gas inventories and reduction strategies.
These companies are learning about conducting business in a
carbon-constrained world and are prepared. For these companies,
managing the carbon footprint of products across the supply chain is the
next step in the effort to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate
change.

If you or anyone you know would like to give a product safety technical
presentation, please contact Paul Smith, our meeting scheduler, by email
at paul...@yahoo.com. A technical presentation should be 45 to 60
minutes in duration and be related to product safety. Although the
presentation may reference your company and its services, the
presentation must not be simply company advertising. We would also
appreciate any slides or handout materials be made available for posting
on the NPSS web site. Releasing presentation materials for posting is
desired but not a requirement to make a presentation.

The 2008 NPSS meeting schedule is available on the NPSS website at

Martin Bell, LLP, will discuss what you can do to better defend and

first place.

If you will be in the area on May 28th, please consider joining us for
dinner and the opportunity to mingle with interesting people involved
with product safety. If you are not yet an NPSS member, this is a great

Attorney Edward Butt has spent over thirty-five years defending
technically complex lawsuits. For the past twenty years his practice
has become increasingly focused to the point where now almost all of his

nationwide basis in products liability cases and consulting with them on
product safety and products liability prevention.

Ed is admitted to practice law in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan, but
he has handled cases in at least twenty-nine states throughout the
country. Ed is of counsel to the law firm of Swanson, Martin Bell,
LLP, based in Chicago. He is a 1971 graduate of the University of
Michigan Law School and a 1968 graduate of Lawrence University. In

Joint EMC Society and NPSS Meeting Tonight, October 22nd

2003-10-22 Thread Matt Campanella

All,

There will be a joint Northeast Product Safety Society and EMC Society
meeting tonight, October 22nd, at EMC Corporation's Customer Briefing
Center at 42 South Street in Hopkinton, MA. A social hour with light
refreshments will begin at 6:00 PM and the technical meeting will start
at 7:00 PM. We have two technical presentations this month with one
predominately EMC related and the other product safety related. The
first technical presentation will start at 7 PM with an expected 45
minute duration followed by a brief Q A time. Our second technical
presentation will start around 8 PM or immediately after any questions
for our first speaker. If you will be in the area, please feel free to
join us as NPSS or EMCS membership or advanced notice is not required.

Our first speaker, Dr. Cheung-Wei Lam, is a Senior Engineer at Apple
Computer. Dr. Lam will present trade-offs and guidelines for signal
integrity design versus radiated emission control. For engineers
responsible for both disciplines, an in-depth understanding of the
similarities and differences between the two is even more important. In
this presentation, key signal integrity and EMC concepts will be
reviewed. Design considerations in the two disciplines will be compared
and contrasted at the chip and PCB levels.

Dr. Lam is engaged in IC, PC board and system level EMC RD at Apple
Computer and has implemented an EMC design and analysis process at Apple
to facilitate on-time compliance at lower cost. Prior to joining Apple,
he was a co-founder and Principal Engineer of Transcendent Design
Technology and worked in Viewlogic's Advanced Development Group
(formerly Quad Design Technology). During his years in the EDA
industry, he has played key roles in the design and development of EMC,
signal integrity and ground bounce analysis software tools.

Dr. Lam received his B.S. degree in electronics from the Chinese
University of Hong Kong, and his S.M. and PhD degrees in electrical
engineering and computer science from MIT. He has served on the IEEE
EMC/S TC-9 Computational EMC committee and the SAE EMC Modeling Task
Force committee. He has given numerous papers, seminars, workshops,
tutorials, and training courses on various EMC and signal integrity
topics in the US, Europe and Japan. He was a co-recipient of the best
paper award at the 1996 IEEE International Symposium on EMC. In 2002,
he was appointed to serve as an IEEE EMC Society Distinguished Lecturer
and is listed in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in
America, and Who's Who in the World.

Our second speaker, Mr. Timo Venalainen, is the Technical Manager of
Electronic Products at CSA-International. Mr. Venalainen will present
an overview of new requirements in IEC 60065-7th edition, and a progress
report on the TC 108 work under way on the Hazard-Based Standard. Since
the New Hazard-based Standard will replace both 60950 and 60065, this
topic will be of particular interest to anyone involved with product
safety certifications.

Mr. Venalainen has been involved with certification of audio video
products at CSA for 31 years. He has been a Senior Engineer for over 18
years. Mr. Venalainen is a member of IEC TC 108 committee and working
on the maintenance of IEC 60065. He is also assisting in the writing of
the new Hazard-Based Standard to cover IT and AV Equipment.

The 2002 NPSS meeting schedule is available on the NPSS website at
http://www.nepss.org/meetings/NPSS2003Calendar.htm.

Further information about the Northeast Product Safety Society and how
to become a member is available at http://www.nepss.org. You can also
contact one of the NPSS officers via links at

Directions:
From Route 495 North or South take exit 21B to West Main Street.
Counting the first traffic light as the traffic light at the off ramp
from Route 495 South.

responsible for both disciplines, an in-depth understanding of the
similarities and differences between the two is even more important. In
this presentation, key signal integrity and EMC concepts will be

Northeast Product Safety Society Meeting Tomorrow, Wednesday April 23

2003-04-23 Thread Matt Campanella

All,

There will be a Northeast Product Safety Society meeting tomorrow,
Wednesday April 23rd, at EMC Corporation's Customer Briefing Center at
42 South Street in Hopkinton, MA. A social hour with light refreshments
will begin at 7:00 PM and the technical meeting will start at 7:30 PM.
This month’s topic, presented by Moe Lamothe, President of Lamothe
Associates, concerns IEC/EN/UL/CSA 61010-1 changes between the first and
second editions. Moe’s presentation will cover North American
deviations and compare spacing requirements of 61010-1 1st edition,
61010-1 2nd edition, and 60950-1 1st edition.

Moe is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario, Canada and has
provided companies with a professional product safety approvals service
since founding Lamothe and Associates in 1979. Lamothe and Associates
handle a variety of products with a heavy emphasis on Information
Technology Equipment, Telephone Equipment, Test and Measurement
Equipment, Medical Products, Signal Equipment Power Supplies. They
emphasize the consulting aspect of their service rather than the testing
side. They are the only service that has portable test equipment
(which they designed and built) capable of performing the CSA/UL
Telephone Power Cross Test and is a particular advantage for large or
complex equipment that is best tested at the manufacturers facility.

Further information about Moe and Lamothe Associates is available at
their web site at http://www.lamothe-approvals.com/CVMoe.htm.

The 2003 NPSS meeting schedule is available on the NPSS website at

Glyn Garside’s SEMI S2 safety guideline presentation will provide an
introduction to SEMI S2 and concern issues such as:
- Is a guideline the same as a standard?
- Is it mandatory?
- Why are there no shall statements in the standard?

Reminder - NPSS Meeting Tomorrow on Wednesday, February 26

2003-02-25 Thread Matt Campanella

There will be a Northeast Product Safety Society meeting tomorrow,
Wednesday, February 26th, at EMC Corporation's Customer Briefing Center
at 42 South Street in Hopkinton, MA. A social hour with light
refreshments will begin at 7:00 PM and the technical meeting will start
at 7:30 PM. David W. Simmerer, former Director of Product Reliability
at Olson Manufacturing Company, will present this month’s topic on
Failure Mode and Effects Analysis.

David’s presentation will provide an overview of FMEA and it’s
methodology with an example analysis using a Ford car door. He will
illustrate FMEA application with past experiences such as brain shunts
for JJ in Switzerland, Otis Elevator, and some actual hospital process
FMEA's that have done to prevent patient mix-up of diagnosis and
prescriptions and stealing of infants, etc. David will condense what is
normally a two or three day seminar into 1 hour, and still leave time
for QA and discussions afterwards. If you have never taken part in a
FMEA this will be a new insight for you, and if you have, then this can
provide some refresher information.

David W. Simmerer is a management consultant with over 40 years of
experience in all areas of quality improvement. David is a former
Director of Product Reliability and Human Resources at Olson
Manufacturing Company. David studied mechanical engineering and
graduated from the WPI School of Industrial Management. He is past
chairperson of the American Society for Quality, Worcester Section.

January NPSS Meeting is Tomorrow, January 22nd

2003-01-21 Thread Matt Campanella

There will be a Northeast Product Safety Society meeting tomorrow,
January 22nd, at EMC Corporation's Customer Briefing Center at 42 South
Street in Hopkinton, MA. A social hour with light refreshments will
begin at 7:00 PM and the technical meeting will start at 7:30 PM. John
Freudenberg, NPSS webmaster for the last two years, will be presenting
this month’s technical topic concerning the history and future plans for
the NPSS web site. His discussion will show how any compliance
engineer with zero web experience can become a novice NPSS webmaster in
10 minutes.

The presentation will be followed by a brief training demo in which a
brave volunteer with no previous web experience will be shown how to
make an actual live on-line modification to the official NPSS web
site.

Time permitting we'll also invite as many members as possible from the
audience to lead a 2 minute (max) presentation of their company web
sites

o Manufacturers will be invited to highlight their site and point to
ways in which the web has been used to distribute compliance
information. An LCD projector will be available but you'll need to be
prepared with your own laptop and way to get through your company
firewall.

o Vendors will be invited to highlight their site and point to ways in
which the web has been used to provide useful technical information to
potential customers.

In the live session we'll download one of the web pages using a free
public File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program, make minor edits to the web
page and upload (implement) the revised web page back to the NPSS web
site. The demo will be useful to future NPSS webmasters and to others
interested in being webmaster of a web site for your own home, family,
sports, non-profit organization or business equivalent to www.nepss.org

Reminder - Joint EMC NPSS Meeting Tomorrow, June 26th

2002-06-25 Thread Matt Campanella

All,

Our joint NPSS and EMC Society meeting tomorrow, June 26th, features two
speakers. Due to the extensive technical program, the social hour with
light refreshments will begin at 6:30 PM and the technical meeting will
start at 7:00 PM. The joint meeting will be held at EMC Corporation's
Customer Briefing Center in Hopkinton, MA. The first technical
presentation will start at 7:00 PM with a 45 minute expected duration.
Our second technical presentation will start around 7:45 PM or
immediately after any questions for our first speaker.

Doug Smith, IEEE EMC Society Distinguished Lecturer, will present this
month’s first topic concerning Computer Security for the Engineer, 'The
Knock in the Middle of the Night'. What is the worst thing that can
happen to your computer? It may be much worse than just losing your
files or having them posted on the Internet for all to see. Doug’s talk
will cover some of the things that can happen and how to avoid them.
Screen shots from an attack on Doug's computer will be shown to
illustrate some of the things that can happen. The remote diagnosis
feature provided by many laptop manufacturers, including Doug's, leaves
them wide open to attack from hackers. During a recent trip, that
weakness was probed 4 times in 2 hours over a dialup by hackers! Bring
your laptop with a modem and check it out real time. As food for
thought, a recording of the emissions from Doug's home computer as heard
on a short-wave radio will be played to show that different computer
activities, such as surfing the Internet and printing, can be
identified.

Vincent DeGiorgio, Senior Risk Consultant for ArupRisk Consulting will
be presenting this month’s second technical topic concerning the risk
assessment process and it’s application. Risk can be found everywhere
such as when you are driving your car, entering your place of work or
taking an airplane flight to start your vacation. By definition risk is
a measure of the potential for loss in terms of both the likelihood
(events/year) of the incident and the consequences (effects/event) of
the incident. In order to measure the level of risk, a systemic
approach known as the risk assessment process is employed. This process
can be used to assess a wide range of risks related to facilities,
equipment, seismic, 911, etc. This presentation will examine the risk
assessment process and see how it can be applied to address risks that
may be of concern to you.

The 2002 NPSS meeting schedule is available on the NPSS website at

Does San Diego Require NRTL Marking to Install ITE

2002-04-12 Thread Matt Campanella

All,

Is NRTL marking a mandatory requirement to install a CMTS router in a
cable head end in San Diego?

We have a 48 VDC powered CMTS router which needs to be installed in a
cable operator’s head end in early May. Although the basic UL
evaluation of the product has been completed without incident, marking
authorization is not expected until late in May after the line filter
vendor has approvals for the line filters.

I have heard that a letter from UL or some other NRTL indicating that
the product is under evaluation and listing the NRTL project number may
be sufficient to install the product. If San Diego is a municipality
that requires NRTL marking to install an ITE product, can a project
notice letter or other procedure be used to allow early installation of
the ITE product?

Any assistance or information will be appreciated.

Regards,

Matt Campanella

Re: Concept virus fix

1996-09-19 Thread Matt Campanella
John,

The Scanprot.dot file is attached. I think it is still available
somewhere on Microsoft's web page if you have any problem unencoding it.
If I knew the path to it on Microsoft's web, I would have sent it rather
than the actual file. Fortunately there were only a few email messages
complaining about large file enclosures.

Hope it helps,

Matt Campanella
