Here is the relationship of cell phones to popping corn.

1 Place the popcorn in a bowl with butter and salt.

2 Place one two or three cellphones in a plastic bag and
place in the same bowl. The plastic bag is to protect the cell phone from the
butter.

3 Place the bowl into a microwave oven.

4 Turn microwave oven on high.

5 Run for the hills because you do not want to be anywhere
around when the corn start to pop – that should happen just shortly after
one or all of the cellphones explode and come flying through the clear glass
of the micro wave door.

6 Do not eat the pop corn, even if you can clean it off
the walls, as it will probably be contaminated by the hazardous material from
the 2002/95/EC non compliant cellphones.

Anyone care to comment on whether popping pop-corn with mobile (cell) phones
is a reality?

A number of video c lips are appearing on the internet demonstrating it but it
could of course be contrived:

The devil is in the details.

If the Card Cage is LISTED and it has a particular model number and now you
add data cards to it and
you sell the Card Cage under a different model numbers ( that will vary
depending upon your various configurations ) the Card Cage then becomes no
longer LISTED.

You have to advise UL and have them include all of the new model numbers in
the LISTING and provide info
as to what that changes are.*and that will cost you about 800 US DOLLARS.

Bonjour Benoit:

If a PCB manufacturer buys a card cage that includes a fully listed power
supply (approved by UL or CSA or ETL or any NRTL), and stuff this cage with
his own PCBs (not listed) with no harmful external voltages or access to, and
resell this as a whole new product. Can he put that on the market without
having to re-list the new product as long as the markings on the power supply
are still visible from outside the box?

If the card cage is LISTED, then probably okay.
If a product is LISTED, then it meets safety
requirements for its intended purpose, namely
a card cage with cards provided by another
entity.

Be careful that the card cage is LISTED rather
than RECOGNIZED. If RECOGNIZED, then it is
intended as a part of some host equipment, and
the host equipment will need to be independently
certified (LISTED).

If the card cage is LISTED, and you put another
name on it to make it look like a different
product, or make it look like another manufacturer,
then you will need to get a COMPLEMENTARY
LISTING. This is where t he certification house
lists both you and the card cage as manufacturers,
and that the card cage manufacturer is the actual
manufacturer.

I hope this answers your question.

Rich

RE: ETL vs. UL

2005-03-11 Thread Reginald Henry
All,

I know that most of the general population is aware of the UL mark applied
to almost all appliances, equipment, etc, and that UL is the accepted safety
marked to have on a company's product, at least here in the USA .

However, because of UL's reduction in staff ( which is causing huge delays in
getting service ), and because of some of their harsh treatment of their
clients , I am sure a number of UL's past clients have successfully found
alternative safety labs to submit their products to.

I am investigation alternative safety labs ,ETL is a lab that keeps popping up
as an alternative to UL.

Would anyone please offer me any pros or cons in dealing with ETL ( I already
know the Pros and Cons of UL ) ?

Also , if you would or could inform me of the level of acceptance throughout
the country that ETL has, I would also appreciated that information. I am
already very much aware of the broad based acceptance of UL as THE SAFETY
INSTUTION to go to.

Reg Henry

All,

I have had the same problem in getting my EFT_Burst tester repaired by them,
and found their service to be unacceptable also.

After submitting my tester to them, 3k dollars and one and half month later
, I finally got back the tester ( from Switzerland, HQ for them ).

Their (Hipotronics) Sales Dept. appears to be much more responsible than
their technical/repair support dept.

My experience of using their service dept was an absolute nightmare !

60950 (IEC or EN) is a safety standard for Information Technology Equipment
(ITE). It is the standard for evaluation of a piece of ITE equipment for
electric shock, energy hazards, fire hazards, radiation hazards, chemical
hazards, and mechanical hazards.

60529 (IEC or EN) is the ingress protection standard. It is a test standard
which enclosures are tested for the extent to which they protect against
personnel access, dust access, and water access in various environmental
conditions.

They are not comparable, they are complementary. Say you've got an outdoor
computer. The outdoor concerns, such as rain and dust, could be evaluated
to 60529, where the electrical safety concerns inherent to computers (shock,
fire, etc.) would be evaluated to 60950.

Hope this helps.

My feeling actually. If we are here to receive and to share information,
than those in need should NOT be intimidated by their naiveté.

So, if there should be some looking up of information by the questioner,
point him or her in the direction as to where to find it without the
negative comments.

pertinent comments and also a very impolite one like This appears to be a
case of not reading the standard. Please buy a copy and read it. This last
one comes in flagrant contradiction with the other emails and with the

I would raise the question about how a power supply with only basic
insulation between input and output is suitable for PCs with male D-subs, or
for PC headphones which are not isolated for 1500V rms.

It would be interesting to see the opinion of our colleagues working in the

Hi,

Can anyone explain the electrical strength requirements for PC power
supplies (input/output) to comply with EN60950. Does basic insulation or
reinforced insulation apply? Particularly in the case that the PC

are only basic insulated PS suitable.

I found that most power supplies available on the market are only tested at

Step by Step procedure for calculating and performing Data Corre lation

2003-04-25 Thread Reginald Henry

All,

++
Sorry I forgot to include that my current tests using the GTEM is under
software control by a company called TILE. So collecting the data ( Radiated
Emission for Class A FCC ) at my end is not a problem.
++

I am working with a GTEM Cell and wish to perform self verification of our
Class A products. We have going to an outside testing house for FCC
verification and wish now to do our own verification.

*
WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR IS THE

Step by Step procedure for calculating and performing Data
Correlation between a GTEM Cell and OATS !

**

In researching what has to be done to accomplish this task, I have gathered
the following information...

1)I Do NOT have to submit the correlated data to the FCC

2) The test does require that we do three ( 3 ) separate setups and break
down when we start to collect data.

3) The correlation between a GTEM and an OATS must be performed with a
device of the type for which you wish to qualify the GTEM. The OATS must
comply with the requirements of ANSI C63.4 and the correlation measurements
must be performed per C63.4. The same measuring instruments should ( but is
not necessary )be used at both test locations.

If anyone has done the math and the setups for such testing , would you
pls contact me or point me in the direction where I could possibly educate
myself.

Regards,

Reg Henry

Hello All,

Does anyone have any regulatory literature indicating the creepage and
clearance distance reqs for a 12 VAC (RMS) input to a chassis and input to a

RE: Apples and Oranges of FCC Data Correlation / Verification

2002-08-15 Thread Reginald Henry

Ken,

I guess I stand corrected ! I spoke with Thomas Philips of the FCC, he gave
me addition info.

I had asked the same question to him that I had asking the group.

Apparently I was mixing Apples with Oranges. With our products we are
dealing (Information Equipment ) Class A part 15 sub part B ,etc.

We are looking to self VERIFY but NOT to have our product Certified.

My understanding in speaking to Thomas Phillips is that when you are
Certifying your products and you are using a GTEM Cell to do so , that is
only then that you take your test product to the OATS and perform this back
and forth between OATS and GTEM ( three (3) times ) .

You then submit this data to the FCC and show your method of data
correlation. My understanding is that this is only to be once !

This is NOT what I am actually looking for. I am looking to FCC Verify .

I evolved this same technique for a customer who was having problems
correlating GTEM and OATS data. But I made the following extra
recommendation which I believe is absolutely essential. If the EUT has any
cables attached to it, power or otherwise, then cable common mode currents
must be separately controlled, because the algorithm which correlates GTEM
potentials and OATS field intensities assumes the EUT is a point source of
radiation. This is true whether you use a software algorithm or a
completely empirical technique such as a standard site source (comb
generator driving a stub antenna). The cables are a distributed source of
radiation and cannot be properly laid out in the GTEM cell (even in my
customer's cell, in which I could stand up and walk around).

 Group,

I have a GTEM Cell that I use for CE Emission and Immunity testing.

For my FCC testing currently I only do FCC Prescreening ( using package
 software to control

and monitor the emissions in the cell )for FCC Class A, etc., then we send

the product out to a testing house in the area to get the FCC cert.

I inquired about FCC self certifying ones own site , and found it to be
a
 do able but involved

 process.

My understanding now, is that there is a way to comply with the
requirements
by the FCC using something call Data Correlation. This is where you
would
go to an OATS and take measures, and then take the same unit ( all things
being equal , setup , mode of operation , etc ) inside of the GTEM Cell .

If you document this ( emission reading of one vs. the other ) and then
correlate the data , all subsequent tests in your GTEM Cell can be
adjusted
to reflect what you would have gotten at an OATS.

My question is, does anyone know where there is an Official FCC document
stating that this is an accepted practice, or where EXACTLY is this info
located on the FCC web site?

Once again, thanking you all in advance for your assistance.

How to become self certifying for FCC (IT equipment)?

2002-06-13 Thread Reginald Henry

Greeting to all !

Does any one know what is required by a manufacture's EMC lab site to become
self certifying for FCC Class A or B
 (IT equipment) ?

Is there an Official FCC web site that would explicitly state what
would be the necessary criteria/requirement to establish such a site ?

(I would like something more tangible than just word of mouth !)

Best regards to all,

RH

I use the Hewlett Packard 3490A Data Acquisition / Switch Unit in

Not only could you monitor thermo activities but I believe you could also
set it to measure voltages.

Acutally, the term RJ is used by the FCC for designating
connectors that are part of the registration (now approval)
process. So why would you want to call a ethernet connector
by a designation used by the telephone industry?

I am not going to police the use of the term, but I wanted
to put that information out to everyone.

so if we called it an RJ-48C, would that be better ??

Although it may suprise some, and I may get flak, but
an RJ45 connector is an specific configuration used
exclusively for a programmable data connection. It
has a specific wiring configuration. The RJ
stands for Registered Jack. This is an FCC designation
of that specific configuration.

There is nothing against using an 8-pin modular plug/jack
for 10Base-Tor 100Base-T, or even microphone inputs
to my Ham radio, but do not call it a RJ45.

Now, yes, there are several vendors that produce shielded and
filtered 8-pin modular jacks. I remember using them and
working with several vendors a few years ago, but I would
suggest you look at the website or catalogs of the major
connector suppliers.

To All,

Can anyone out there tell me where I would be able to purchase a fully
shielded and filter
RJ45 connector that is Bulkhead mountable.

The RJ45 must be able to handle data rates from 10Base T to 100Base T

I will be performing CE testing in the chamber so it must be bulkhead
mountable !

Thanks and Happy Holidays to YOU ALL !

RE: RJ45 filtered connector

2001-12-26 Thread Reginald Henry

Ron,

Thank you for your assistance in getting me closer to completing my task at
hand !

I really like the different alternative solutions that you have provided for
me.

I also tend to agree with you, in terms of the speeds ( Category 3 aka ...
Cat 3 for 10 Base T,

Category 5 aka Cat 5 for 100Base T)I will be working with, does not lend
itself well to traverse

thru mixed connectors ( terminations , DB connectors, etc ).

My understanding in the little education that I have gotten since I first
started investigating

these connectors,is that the degree in which the wires are twisted ( number
of twist per xxx

distance )will make all the difference in the world if the information
(data) gets thru or not.

Once again thanks a million.

PS. I loved your comment about the flames... very appropriate ! LOL

Hi Reg,

Trying to find a bulkhead RJ45 (shielded filtered) connector for an EMC
chamber may prove to be an
impossible task as, IMHO, this type of connector might be fairly fragile and
hard to install for
such use. To that end, I will offer some suggestions:

1. Talk to chamber manufacturers. I am quite sure that they would know about
such a connector if one
exists.

2. A bulkhead mounted DB25 connector might work. These can come filtered,
however, the filtering
involved should not impact the communication speeds you will be working
with. To connect to standard
ethernet cables, use 2x(DB25-RJ45) adapters (1 inside 1 outside). The
whole thing would be
connected as Outside Cable - Adapter - Bulkhead DB Connector - Adapter -
Inside Cable. These
adapters are quite common and shouldn't need to be filtered as the DB
connectors would do that and
if extra filtering is needed, a simple clip-on ferrite might be all that's
needed (the ferrite might
even be put inside the adapter backshell). And, the DB25 connector might be
used for other
interfaces during testing, as well.

3. You shouldn't need any connector if your EMC chamber has a ventilation
opening. Just fit a cable
thru the opening and put enough ferrite around the cable (inside and
outside) to suppress any common
mode interference.

These suggestions are intended to get all those neurons firing to think of
some connector
alternatives to the one you're seeking. I hope this helps.

Comments anyone? Bring on the flames. :-)

Ron Pickard

Reg,

Look at Regal Electronics at http://www.regalusa.com. They have board
mounted RJ-45 that have gasketing appropriate for a panel.
