ESD Protection for 100BASE-T?

1998-03-06 Thread donnellm
Folks,

How does one provide ESD immunity for 100BASE-T ethernet
ports without interfering with the signal?

Thanks for listening.

A quick question on ADSL modems:

Do they have to meet Part 68 requirements?

 Thank you,

Jerry,

Presently, there are no rules for registering ADSL
equipment under Part 68.
Not even to prove there is no harm to the POTS line the
equipmwnt is connected to.

Your best source of Part 68 info is Mr. Bill von Alven at
the FCC Part 68 office.
He does make an appearance here now and then, but if not,
the phone number for him is 202-418-2342 or by e-mail

GTEM Cell Experiences?

1997-01-23 Thread donnellm
EMC Folks,

Does anyone use a GTEM Cell for Part 15 EMI testing?

If so , would you share your experiences, in
particular, bad experiences, problems, etc. The
advertising tells all the benefits, but I am wondering
about the downside.

Thanks very much.

I still have the problem when I remove all of the
cables from the system,
including the printer cable, etc. The emissions are
coming out of the
holes in the PC cabinet and this is a very good PC
and is well sealed. The
largest emissions seem to be coming from the fan
vent holes.

Max,
We have had problems with fans and fan vent holes very
often.

All the rules about hole sizes and emissions don't
apply when the body of the fan is mounted right up
against them and the fan itself is hot with RF. We
have had to keep the power wiring to the fan held flat
against the chassis and then put ferrites on it to
choke off any pickup from emissions inside the box.

Once we had to put ferrites on the fan leads from a
Pentium cooling fan. It seemed to pick RF up
capacitively right off the case of the Pentium it was
cooling and then the leads radiated thruout the case.

Good luck!

Re: New Canadian Marking Requirement?

1996-06-03 Thread donnellm
emc-pstc folks:

According to my records this marking requirement took effect
April 1, 1995 with publication of ICES-003 Issue 2, Revision 1.
Actually it is two sentences, one in English and one in French.
(Or is it the same sentence in two languages?)

You can ask for your own copy of the standard from the
Publications Dept. of Industry Canada at 1-613-990-4761 .
Their FAX number is 1-613-952-5108 .
There was no charge when I got it. Very nice touch, I thought.

We have been putting the statements on our labels for the last
year (for products where it is applicable). The tricky part is
getting the little diacritical marks over some of the letters in
the French sentence.

I have just been told that a standard, ICES-003 issue 02,
has
been released which requires manufacturers to add yet
another
marking to our digital products (if there is enough
space). It's
not a symbol. It's an complete sentence.

It also requires the statement to exist in product
manuals along
with shipping a written notice of compliance with each
unit. I
suppose we would add this statement to the already
existing D of
  C.

  Is anyone doing this now?
