A statement in the product's site prep guide to say " Installation by a

Hello Group, a colleague has asked me to identify the mfg marking stamped
on
a metal surface mount fuse. Looks like a small "V" with another inverted
"V" placed directly on top in "interlocking" fashion. The UL rep has asked
us to identify this manufacturer. The fuse is installed on a purchased
PCB.
The symbol seems familiar, but I cannot place it.

Also, the engineer charged with identifying this part says he used to know
a

component

Corrected text Re: What is minimum dBA measured difference above ambient noise for pulsing alarm.

2001-10-19 Thread paul_j_smith

Folks,

It was pointed out that my quote from SEMI S2-0200e is incorrect. I would
like to restate my question to include the correction. I apologize for any
inconvenience my error has caused. My corrected question is as follows.
.
Can anyone cite a reference document / standard that determines if there is
a minimum dBA sound level variation above an expected ambient environment
that is suitable for a pulsing alarm.

In my review , I have found that SEMI S2-0200E Environmental, Health, and
Safety Guideline
for Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment states in Para. 27.1
"...Equipment should be designed to
control exposures to sound pressure levels equal to or greater than 80 dBA
continuous or intermittent sound
pressure level, and 120 dB instantaneous (impulse) sound pressure level."

Further, 29 CFR 1910.95 " Occupational noise exposure" states " . 2.) If
the variations in noise level involve maxima at intervals of 1 second or
less, it is to be considered continuous. " Are there any industry standards
that recommends a pulse level variation?

Your input on this subject is greatly appreciated.

RE: WTC - voice alarm system?

2001-09-21 Thread paul_j_smith

Folks,

The subject discussion is appropriate for the audience if it can be focused
on possible methods to continue to ensure safety compliance. Several
Standards (including SEMI S10, EN 1050 etc. ) require that a written risk
assessment also be provided to demonstrate compliance to the relevant
safety standard.

Many compliance engineers are also involved in risk evaluations of one type
or another of the following.

1. ) Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
2.) Risk Assessments
3.) Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)
4.) Reliability and /or Quality Assurance

Ed,

The name of this forum is "EMC-PSTC" - EMC and product safety.

For us a group, speculating on general matters of security is not
appropriate. There are other professional bodies and organizations created
and staffed specifically to address this very sensitive subject.

Let us focus on what were are here to do - promote the design and placement
of our products in the global marketplace. Design of annunciation systems
hardened against (i.e. immune to) unauthorized external signals is what we
should be endeavoring to create. Human dynamics should be the province of
those specializing in the subject.

I am sure that, with the enormous wealth of experience that exists within
this group, there are some real meaningful contributions that can be made
to
the general safety topic. However, I respectfully suggest that the
potential creativity be focussed into other more appropriate groups.

David:

I would agree that, hypothetically, requesting pictures of plunging bodies
would be totally inappropriate; however discussing the safety aspects of
the
WTC appears to be very on-topic for our group. Regarding the non-security
of
our group; I doubt that anything we say about the WTC can cause any further
degradation of security to that site.

Everyone must deal with this shocking event within their own reference
frame. The more technically inclined among us try to salvage some lessons,
in building design or crowd control or emergency techniques, perhaps as the
best tribute they can pay to the unfortunate victims.

Test lab with capability for thermal and humidity testing needed

2001-06-21 Thread paul_j_smith

Folks,

Can anyone recommend a New England Test lab that has the test capability
needed for the following thermal and humidity test for a three bay system
and a separate workstation on a cart?

 -non-operating, -40 to 72 degrees C. 95% humidity. non condensing.

 -operating 9 to 36 degrees C. 20% to 80% humidity non condensing.

We'll need to do both storage and operating temperature tests; as well as
control the humidity during the storage test.

The station will be moved by the use of crates. The facility needs a
forklift or pallet jack to move the unit. If questions, please contact me
ASAP.

The standards may include what formats of

If it is not proprietary, we would

I'm answering on-list as this might be useful for a number of people (and
save them answering individually).

Go to http://parts.lvctechnology.com/, click on Test Equipment Manuals,
pick
HP, and search for your model. Looks like it's a $10 item.

Well, I'm desparate.

Does anyone have a service manual for an HP6214A (twenty year old) power
supply?
Email me off-list if you can help.

Thanks!

I hope someone will be kind enough to help me.
A while back, someone posted a link to a vendor of used test equipment.
The
vendor also had an extensive list of test equipment manuals available.
In particular, I am looking for manuals for an HP 1664A Logic Analyzer.
Thank You-

Hello group,

I don't know about you, but I've often struggled with finding a central
location that displays a large number of safety agency logos and markings.
This page on the IEC CB Scheme web site has a very comprehensive list with
links to individual pages with information, addresses, logos and links back
to the agency web site.

I thought others might be interested in this as well.

RE: Verifying functionality of the equipment for Production Safety Testing

2000-09-25 Thread paul_j_smith

Folks,

My manufacturing contacts have asked for a lead on a supplier of test
equipment that I can use to be able to test the Hi pot lead for it not to
be open. If you run the Hi Pot test holding the lead in the air it will
pass . We need a way to test that the lead is not open .

The Test requirement (as far as I know) is to verify functionality of the
equipment before testing.

Hi,

I've seen this done before on low current designs. Sometimes when you
replace the batteries in this type of design the circuit voltage does not
have time to drop completely away due to the charge saved on bulk
capacitors. When the new batteries are added the circuit comes up in a
peculiar state. This is particularly true of uP power on reset circuits.
There are more elegant ways to take care of this problem but I suppose a
single resistor would be the cheapest (if one ignored battery life).

Subject: Battery Safety

All,

We have inherited a design from a company which we purchased. The product
is a handheld and can be operated from a pair of Alkaline batteries.
Inside
the unit, there is a 91 KOhm resistor across the + and - terminals of the
batteries. Since the people who designed the instrument are long gone,
some
of my collegues have asked me if this resistor could be a safety feature.

I can't think of any way this resistor would help the safety of the
instrument. I did read through the safety test report; and I found no
reference to this resistor being required. All it does is provide a
constant drain on the battery (reducing battery life). It has been
suggested to me that some designers put resistors across batteries to
reduce
the electrical noise in a product. To me a capacitor would be better for
this because it wouldn't drain the battery while it was filtering. Even
so,
isn't a battery the ultimate capacitor? I'm just drawing a blank why
anyone
would do this. I'd love to recommend that we pull this resistor out
because
it's a pain to solder and it affects battery life. However, I don't want
to
sacrifice the safety of the product.

Anybody want to take a guess at this one?

Thanks.
