[PSES] High voltage versus High tension

2020-08-03 Thread Regan Arndt
Hi folks,

I never encountered this before but am curious if anyone had any problems
in using the European verbiage ‘High Tension’ in lieu of ‘High voltage’
during their 61010 assessment on their labels and documentation.

Unless I am mistaken on the Group & National differences, IEC 61010-1 does
not mention anything specific on allowing this alternative language.

I also want to know if ‘High tension’ would be a problem in the USA and
Canada during a Field evaluation or NRTL certification? (I only ask to
avoid having 2 labels/wording on a global product)

Thanks for sharing any experiences you had.

The terms are international, not just EU.
If you look in the IEC Electropedia terms and definitions there is

high tension
HV
voltage having a value above a conventionally adopted limit
Note – An example is the set of upper voltage values used in bulk power
systems.

haute tension f
HT f
tension électrique de valeur supérieure à une limite adoptée par

Re: [PSES] High voltage versus High tension

2020-08-04 Thread Edward Price
I think the key question is the use of the word “tension” in describing an
electrical potential. Tension has a very specific definition in the world of
Mechanical Engineering and Physics, and I think using “tension” to describe
anything but mechanical tension is a misuse of the word.

My non-expert opinion is that no English speaker would not comprehend the
warning being given by “High Tension” although I would prefer “High Voltage.”
In times before the IEC, the Germans were labeling their high voltage gear with
“Hochspannung.” I did a search on Safety Hazard signs and found only this one
German example of a multi-lingual warning sign (maybe it’s a BCB transmitting
antenna):

[File:High voltage warning sign Beromuenster.JPG - Wikimedia Commons]

Perhaps the “High Tension” usage is too well-established in Europe to allow for
rationalization or perhaps the Europeans have a huge sign inventory still to be
used.

Re: [PSES] High voltage versus High tension

2020-08-04 Thread Pete Perkins
Ken et al,

Remember that the standard EE definitions are: Low Voltage
(up to 600Vac), Medium Voltage (e.g. neighborhood distribution - 10s of kVs)
and High Voltage (transmission voltages maybe 100 kV and up).

What we work with in electronics is, for the most part ELV
(Extra Low Voltage) which has multiple definitions but all selected to be
'safe' in some way; the most common definition is 30Vac/42.4Vpeak (with
higher limits for DC). Further sub definitions also exist; IEC 60950
promulgated SELV (Safety ELV) with specific requirements and has been used
by the computer and electronics folks for 40 years.

So, were the folks promoting this usage really considering
High transmission voltages?

Re: [PSES] [EXTERNAL] [PSES] High voltage versus High tension

2020-08-03 Thread Ted Eckert
Hello Regan,

I’ve only seen “high tension” in reference to overhead power lines. I cannot
recall the term ever being used with equipment. There may be a more basic
question than whether or not it would be accepted by an NRTL during a field
evaluation. Would the meaning of a label stating “high tension” be clear to the
user? Warning labels should be as clear as possible and intuitively understood.
Most Americans likely wouldn’t know what the hazard would be if a piece of
equipment was marked “high tension”.

Best regards,
Ted Eckert

The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of my

labels/wording on a global product)
Thanks for sharing any experiences you had.
