Re: [PSES] UL Trademark and Tradename Indexes no longer public

2015-03-13 Thread Brian Gregory
My comments are threefold. 1. Searching UL databases is not a slam dunk: one
almost never discovers exactly the details sought. The UL file #'s for PWBs
and for insulating materials are the exceptions to this rule. In the past (I
worked for a competitor to UL), I would have to use the UL file information in
addition to physical inspection and some directed references, including public
papers. From: Carl NewtonSent: Monday, March 9, 2015 10:56 AM

Subject: [PSES] UL Trademark and Tradename Indexes no longer public

I need to know what the temperature rating is on a power supply PWB and as
usual, 2. It's usually considered as an insulation system, and the temp
ratings are given by the stamping (aka, 94 V-0). The UL file can be
invaluable here, because the conditions of use (most often thickness) are
 very important.

  http://database.ul.com/cgi-bin/XYV/template/LISEXT/1FRAME/glocids.html no
longer active... I called UL and the customer service rep was as helpful as
possible. 3. Do a bit of online research; UL has LOTS of databases: even
when I had to use them several times per week, I nearly always found a new
one I hadn't known about. The new Insulation Database cited on this group
looks promising, but the class Online database is still quite useful. he
chased the question a bit is that UL will no longer make this information
public. Sounds more like a generic reply a help-desk person will give to end
the call. However, I do not believe UL is legally bound to keep detailed
records public, only Company Name file number. Hence, #3 is a valuable
 skill to have.

Re: [PSES] UL Trademark and Tradename Indexes no longer public

2015-03-09 Thread John Allen
If it is true that UL will no longer make the information publically available,
then a lot of people are going to have a lot of trouble deciding what something
is, or what materials to use.

OTOH, that info is actually highly commercially valuable to UL, but they have
been effectively giving it away F.O.C., and thus to their direct competitors,
for decades - so it's probably not really surprising if they are making this
sort of change.

The info probably is available (at least to some extent) to companies which
hold UL Listing/Recognition (etc.) agreements as they will be paying UL some
money all the time - and UL might even begin to give access rights to specific
sections of the database to others, providing they pay (though the nose!) for
it.

Could be a wait-and-see situation for the moment?

Re: [PSES] UL Trademark and Tradename Indexes no longer public

Available if you know company name when you look at the vendor's 'ZPMV2' file
number
http://database.ul.com/cgi-bin/XYV/template/LISEXT/1FRAME/index.htm

But do not understand your need to know PCB ratings. If you must evaluate
construction of the component power supply, then respectfully suggest that you
find another supplier. Or am missing something obvious?

Subject: [PSES] UL Trademark and Tradename Indexes no longer public

Members,

UL has always kept the list of their customers trademarks and tradenames
indexes public. I've always relied heavily upon that information for
ZPMV2 printed wiring board identification. I need to know what the
temperature rating is on a power supply PWB and as usual, all I have to
work with is the PWB manufacturer trademark.

The following link is no longer functional:
http://database.ul.com/cgi-bin/XYV/template/LISEXT/1FRAME/glocids.html

I called UL and the customer service rep was as helpful as possible. But
the short answer after he chased the question a bit is that UL will no
longer make this information public.

Have any of you bumped into this issue yet, and if so, have you found an
alternate solution?

Thanks,

Carl
