Re: [PSES] phishing e-mail from an old account of yours?

2019-04-02 Thread Bill Owsley
I got one, an extortion email, using an ancient ID and password from a
Netscape account, how long ago?  Like AOL is secure ?  Don't they own the old
Netscape? But the amazing aspect is that it came to my less than year old Corp
email ID.
My guess is that not only has some old database been hacked, for ID and
password, but also google or whatever is tracking and matching ID's all over
the internet. How to connect an over 15 year old defunct account to a brand new
ID on a Corp account is a mystery.
It appears to be bot driven, as each week I get the same from a different
sender.

Re: [PSES] phishing e-mail from an old account of yours?

2019-04-01 Thread Doug Nix
Colleagues,

No website breaches or mail account hacking is required for these kinds of
scams. All someone needs is to scrape your email address from a public website
(think LinkedIn, but a corporate site can be it too). Once you have that it’s a
pretty easy job to spoof someone’s email.

Re: [PSES] phishing e-mail from an old account of yours?

2019-03-29 Thread John Allen
I've had several probably "nasty" emails from sources that appeared to have
spoofed some of the email addresses used by myself and several people that I
know, but please don't confuse me with John R Allen of Product Safety Inc.

FWIW, I don't think the data breach in question was specific to UK email
addresses because there was a huge one a few months ago of a web address
data base on a particular website.

Ther are press reports in England of a major email leak - up to a billion
addresses, it is alleged.
