Subject: Re: EMC immunity requirements in Canada?

I was not clear enough in my original message when I said that there
ARE requirements but no per se standards. The de-facto immunity
requirements the FCC has (and the Canadians) is the responsibility the
manufacturer accepts as posted on the label. This is called out in
15.19 (in part) as follows:

(3) All other devices shall bear the following statement in a
conspicuous location on the device:

This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is
subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause
harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference
received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

Thus the FCC does not dictate WHAT the testing levels are, only that
the manufacturer must meet generally accepted design guidelines that
protect the consumer and is on the hook for meeting them at their
expense. If this is splitting hairs to anyone, it is not that vague
to me.

Warren,

Could you reference the section of part 15 (or elsewhere) where the
FCC
calls out immunity requirements? I have to speculate that you are
mixing up

other requirements such as GR-1089 NEBS with the FCC.

Thanks,
Marko

The Canadians accept FCC data, which DOES include immunity
requirements. There are no testing standards for immunity, only that
the device must accept any interference for normal operation. See the

AW: EMC immunity requirements in Canada?

2002-09-20 Thread Lehmann, Mario (Mario)

Hi Amund,

Products in Canada must conform to the following:
   * ICES-003 for digital apparatus
   * CAN/CSA - CISPR 22-96 for other devices

ICES-003 incorporates by reference CSA C108.8-M1983 or CAN/CSA-CISPR 22-96
as an alternative standard. The manufacturer can choose which one to use.

Canada has no mandatory immunity requirements. The following Industry
voluntary standards can be used:
   * ANSI/TIA/EIA-613
   * EIA 470 A (a belltap standard)
   * ANSI T1.308 (applies to central office equipment)

ICES-003 is based on CISPR 22 and FCC Part 15. Devices that meet CISPR 22
or FCC 15 do not have to be separately tested to ICES-003. Canada has a
"self certification" requirement for
EMC testing. Any test laboratory or manufacturer that can perform the tests
can certify that the product meets these standards. IC has a guide to
compliance with ICES-003 named
"Electromagnetic Compatibility Advisory Bulletin (EMCAB) - 3". This guide
is available from IC's website.

Category I Equipment and EMC
These devices must be certified by Industry Canada. The Radio Equipment
approval process is followed. The manufacturer or an independent test lab
does the required EMC testing and
prepares a test report that must be kept for 5 years.

Category II Equipment and EMC
The manufacturer or an independent test lab does the required EMC testing
and prepares a test report that must be kept for 5 years. Industry Canada
can request to see this test report at
any time. These devices are labeled as Class A or B and the notice affixed
to the device as required by ICES-003

IC accepts for the purposes of radio equipment certification, radiated
emission measurements taken using a GTEM device under certain conditions.

Engineering Bureau for more information:

A notice about GTEM testing is found at: http://spectrum.ic.gc.ca/~cert/

Canada has no mandatory immunity requirements. The following Industry
voluntary standards can be used:
   * ANSI/TIA/EIA-613
   * EIA 470 A (a belltap standard)
   * ANSI T1.308 (applies to central office equipment)

RE: EMC immunity requirements in Canada?

2002-09-19 Thread Grasso, Charles

Hi Warren,

As I understand the FCC Part 15 regs there are NO immunity requirements.
Indeed the FCC have in the past allowed the market to dictate the "quality"
of the EM design. Has there been a change??

Re: EMC immunity requirements in Canada?

2002-09-19 Thread John Barnes

Amund,
Like the US, Canada has just radiated and conducted emissions
requirements. The pertinent standard for Digital Apparatus is Industry
Canada's ICES-003 Issue 3, dated November 22, 1997.  This standard may
be downloaded from:
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/1/sf00020e.html
and the implementation/interpretation guide from:
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/1/sf01006e.html

You may want to refer to three web pages on our company's web site
about international electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electromagnetic
interference (EMC), and electrostatic discharge (ESD) requirements:
*  http://www.dbicorporation.com/ite.htm   for information technology
   equipment (ITE).
* http://www.dbicorporation.com/generic.htm for generic devices used
   in residential, commercial, and light industrial areas.
* http://www.dbicorporation.com/industry.htm for generic devices used
   in industry.
