RE: PDF file copy method

2000-07-20 Thread Scott Lacey

Barry,
If the protections are set so that you can neither select text nor print,
you are pretty much out of luck. If the problem is that the pdf file was
created from a scanned document you may be able to print to a fax file (if
you have a fax modem card and appropriate software. Many fax programs have
OCR (Optical Character Recognition)capability. You can print to a stored fax
file, and then open it as if it were a received fax, using the OCR input
option. Some OCR programs are better than others at recovering text
correctly. It's worth a try if you or a co-worker already have the software.

Just a thought.

RE: PDF file copy method

2000-07-18 Thread Roman, Dan

One thing not mentioned in all the posts on this subject is that if the
document was scanned and not captured then the text is really graphics and
would not be selectable as text. Thankfully most documents these days are
created directly from the source document into a PDF using PDF Writer which
allows the file to be compact and the text selectable. This is not always
the case though.

Barry - what's it like being a minority?

This does not really help though does it. From Acrobat you should be able to
cut and paste text into any wp application or ascii editor.

In Acrobat 3 there is a select text tool icon and on the tools drop down
there is otions to select text or graphics.

On Acrobat 4 there is only a select text icon BUT if you hold the pointer
down on the icon it will flip to a selection of select grahics or select
column also.

RE: PDF file copy method

2000-07-18 Thread Price, Ed

Barry:

This is copied from the pdf Help file:

Copying and pasting text and graphics to another
application
You can select text or a graphic in a PDF document, copy it to the
Clipboard,
and paste it into a document in another application such as a word
processor.
You can also paste text into a PDF document note or into a bookmark.
Once the selected text or graphic is on the Clipboard, you can switch to
another application and paste it into another document.
Note: If a font copied from a PDF document is not available on the system
displaying the copied text, the font cannot be preserved. A default font is
substituted..Page 54
Using Acrobat Reader
To select text and copy it to the clipboard:
1 Select the text select tool , and do one of the following:
To select a line of text, select the first letter of the sentence or phrase
and
drag to the last letter.
To select multiple columns of text (horizontally), hold down Ctrl (Windows
and UNIX) or Option (Mac OS) as you drag across the width of the document.
To select a column of text (vertically), hold down Ctrl+Alt (Windows) or
Option+Command (Mac OS) as you drag the length of the document.
To select all the text on the page, choose Edit Select All. In Single Page
mode, all the text on the current page is selected. In Continuous or
Continuous
- Facing mode, most of the text in the document is selected. When you
release
the mouse button, the selected text is highlighted. To deselect the text and
start over, click anywhere outside the selected text.
The Select All command will not select all the text in the document. A
workaround for this (Windows) is to use the Edit Copy command.
2 Choose Edit Copy to copy the selected text to the Clipboard.
3 To view the text, choose Window Show Clipboard..Page 55
Using Acrobat Reader
In Windows 95, the Clipboard Viewer is not installed by default, and you
cannot
use the Show Clipboard command until it is installed. To install the
Clipboard
Viewer, choose Start Settings Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, and
then click the Windows Setup tab. Double-click Accessories, check Clipboard
Viewer, and click OK.
To copy graphics to the Clipboard:
1 Select the graphics select tool by holding down the mouse button on
the text select tool and dragging to the graphics select tool. Or press
Shift-V as
necessary to cycle through the group of tools. The cursor changes to the
cross-hair
icon.
2 Drag a rectangle around the graphic you want to copy. To deselect the
graphic and start over, click anywhere outside the selected graphic.
3 Choose Edit Copy to copy the graphic to the Clipboard.
4 To view the graphic, choose Window Show Clipboard. The graphic is
copied using the WMF (Windows), PICT (Mac OS), or XPIXMAP (UNIX) format. In
UNIX, the graphic is pasted in the primary selection.

Now, I didn't put in any editing. This was a single pass, highlighted in the
pdf document, copied, and pasted into Outlook. Notice that it does need a
little cleanup.

Be sure that you have the Continuous page mode selected, or you can only
copy from any one page at a time. BTW, the pdf author can set the security
to not allow copying.
