RE: EMC test software - TILE

2006-09-15 Thread emc-p...@ieee.org
So what you are saying is that he sends you an instrument driver that he has
no way of testing. If/when you tell him that it works fine, you have only
tested it using the functions needed for your particular application. It may
not work for the next person.

When I started working at my present employer, they had been using Tile for a
few years. As I understand it, the profiles they were using had been setup by
a representative of Quantum Change. They were very happy with it. However,
within short order, I discovered problems with every instrument driver they
were using. The driver for the spectrum analyzer had a problem that caused
measurement errors of as much as 8dB. Yes, Mike did fix (most) of the
problems, but I wonder how many other "happy" users have no idea they have
problems.

One problem I discovered, in the Immunity section, was that the "Max sig-gen
level" did not always work. If a certain sequence of events occured, it would
set the signal generator level way above the max level set by the user, and
way above the 0dBm limit of most amplifiers. Luckily, it has not destroyed any
equipment -- yet.

And while Tile is very flexible -- I don't dispute that -- the user interface
is lacking. While the flowchart looks a little like Labview, that is where the
similarity ends. However, that is usually the part of the package that you
will see emphasized in literature.

Yes, I am sure there are a lot of labs using it succesfully. What I am saying
is that there is a lot of room for improvement.

I always approach software as a pessimist. Instead of assuming it is working
correctly and trying to prove it, I assume it is NOT working correctly, and
try to prove that. I've discovered that I find more problems that way. :-)

Good People,

I specifically did not want to get into "code wars", but since other people
have intro'd the 'T' vs 'U' "argument", I will append to what has been said.

CAVEAT: I am NOT an EMC expert, and would not even qualify as a journeyman
EMC tech.

I have observed some configuration management problems with TILE that were
(in my opinion) design-related.

I have experienced some support problems with UL stuff.

IMO, both systems attempt too much.

If one is able and has the time (hah?!?!), I would encourage EMC test labs
to base their automation systems on Linux/BSD/Unix boxen - reliable, simple,
and timeless. Write small modular test drivers that are specific to your
needs, abstract instrument drivers, and use C only if you have multiple
years of serious experience (I like to write hardware drivers in C, and all
else in Python).

luck,
Brian

As for immunity, I wrote a lot of software for both conducted and radiated
immunity. If you need a good conducted immunity package, check out:

http://emc.toprudder.com/software/radcon/index.html

It includes some instrument drivers, but it has a facility to allow you to
create your own instrument files if you are familiar with the GPIB commands
for your instrument. If you use the National Instruments GPIB interface, you
can use the NISpy program to view the GPIB commands sent by other programs.
