Re: [Emc-users] 8255 driver

2008-05-03 Thread Dave Keeton
So here is what I have done.(Recommended by another user)

The pci_8255 showed up in both components and functions
but nothing in pins under Hal Configuration. So I commented it out and did
this...
 In the m5i20_io.hal file -
loadrt hal_ax5214h cfg=0x220_iiooiioo(Copied
from demo_mazak)
Now I show 56 I/O points in Hal Configuration and Hal Meter under
pins.Does this mean it worked I assume? Do I have to modify the driver
to get the remainder of the I/O points in pins? Do I need to go ahead and
hook up a switch or led to confirm?

   Thanks,
 Dave

If you look in the Integrator's Manual:

 http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/EMC2_Integrator_Manual.pdf

chapter four indicates that the [HAL] section of the .ini file for the
configuration you are running, has an entry(ies) called HALFILE =.
These HALFILE ='s will list the .hal files that are part of the
initialization for starting your configuration in EMC2. One of these
files will have loadrt somedriver and_options in it. You will need a
loadrt entry for your 8255, plus an entry to add the driver to a thread,
something like addf somedriver name_of_thread. You can do a Find for
addf in the manual to get more information. If you start EMC2 and if the
driver loads properly, you should be able to start Halmeter and see the
new Hal pins in the pin list.

Re: [Emc-users] 8255 driver

2008-05-03 Thread rehenry

Hi Dave. Fascinating experiment. The ax driver is intended for a 48 IO ISA
card but I'd hook up a switch to one of the inputs and see if it changes
in the HAL. If it does then we can look into that iioo config stuff and see if
we can expand. I'd try the switch on several of the inputs. One for each set
of 8 inputs. You need pull up or pull down resistors depending on the nature
of your board.

In my early experiments with this stuff I was able to lock up the PC while
doing some of this stuff. Don't be surprised if your's does.

By default the outputs of the 8255 are pulled high by a 100K

I have the gear shift component working with a simulated machine.
I have done a lot of shifting and testing on a simulated machine. It

When I load the shift component I see nan for the X position on

should I look for? Maybe I need to rename a varialble or pin?

Re: [Emc-users] Four Parallel ports

2008-05-03 Thread Organic Engines
Hi,

EMC2's parallel port driver will drive up to eight parallel ports.

Cool. Lots of I/O. Is there a preferred layout for multiple cards?
Should all my step and direction be on one and misc I/O on the others,
or one axis with associated limits and whatnot on each card? Does it matter?

The hard part is finding out the hardware addresses of the ports.
Plug-n-Pray operating systems and the PCI bus have made things
complicated. Do the ports show up when you run 'lspci' from the
 command line?

Have not tried this yet, I did the test on my non-emc Ubuntu desktop,
so I was just fooling about. Interesting is that Win XP crashed on these
cards and Ubuntu worked fine.

[Emc-users] Crash Logs and System Management Interrupt.

2008-05-03 Thread Organic Engines
Hi,

My computer keeps crashing, as in hard lockup. Everything freezes and
it never comes back until I reboot.

I don't even have to be doing anything. The same system will run Ubuntu
7.10 no problem, but it sure does not like the EMC BDI install.

When I run the latency test I see what looks a lot like the symptoms
of the System Management Interrupt.

Where or is there a log that would show or indicate what is happening
at the time of the crash?

  Thanks,
  Dan

Re: [Emc-users] CNC-Workshop

2008-05-03 Thread Jim Coleman
I'd love to come to the workshop, hopefully transportation and funds will
permit. If i can come, i will hopefully bring some of my axis servos and
drives and maybe the VFD off of my machine, just to play with. if i
actually have it running at that time i might not be able to, but i dont
know. No way i could bring the whole machine, as it's roughly 4 tons. I'll
also hopefully have a mesa card to be playin with

 Hi

I just received a call from Roland Friestad, the guy who puts together the
CNC-Workshop each year. He has had a fairly severe heart attack. Got home
from the hospital today and called me. He will try to get the web
registration up in the next week and was wondering if we could help with
 some of the coordination.

He plans to contact the other major players and want's to run the workshop
in spite of the lateness of starting up the web site. He and his wife will
get the site going and handle the registration. If you are one of those
other folk and need to get ahold of him directly, post a note to me here --
rayhswan (at) yahoo.com and I'll get back to you asap with his new cell
 number.

He'd like us to take the responsibility for all of the EMC side of
things. There is the start of a wiki page at

 http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?EMC_Fest_2008

If you'd update this page with info about when you will arrive and what
equipment you'll bring along it would be a big help. Also if there are
things that you are specifically interested in, put it in there as well and
we'll try to get a class setup for your topics.

There are other activities more directly connected with the workshop that
he could use some help with. If someone is willing to assist with the
scheduling of presentations I'll get you in contact with him. We could put
a preliminary page or two on our wiki for his classrooms and times and then
transfer info to him as things come in. If you can take the point on this
 let me know.

It would probably also help if someone could serve as a focal point for
the raffle. Twist arms for contributions and keep track of who gave what so
that Roland has the info he needs during the event. Then that person(s)
would need to keep all the stuff in one place once at the workshop and set
 it up.

I'll plan to show up down there Thursday/Friday before and help arrange
things. If a couple of you could do the same it would really help us,
 Roland, and Joe a lot.

Thanks for your kind attention. Contact me if you need to contact Roland
 directly.

Re: [Emc-users] 8255 driver

2008-05-03 Thread Dave Keeton
I tried a switch and resistor as shown in the NI manual. I set all of the 48
pins to input before I did this in the hal file. Using hal show/watch I
couldn't see any change in the pin status for all of the 48 pins. Could this
be an address issue? the pci address for the DIO 96 is showing as ff0. My
board doesn't have a jumper W1. The manual for it covers 3 different boards.
It is my understanding that if the hardware is not there then the pins won't
show at all in hal. Could this driver be somewhat different? If addressing
is this issue how do determine what to put in the loadrt command?

   Thank you for your help,
   Dave

By default the outputs of the 8255 are pulled high by a 100K
resistor. Jumper W1 will flip that.
See pages 3-11,12 of the manual.

Hi Dave. Fascinating experiment. The ax driver is intended for a
48 IO ISA card but I'd hook up a switch to one of the inputs
and see if it changes in the HAL. If it does then we can look into
that iioo config stuff and see if we can expand. I'd try the
switch on several of the inputs. One for each set of 8 inputs.
You need pull up or pull down resistors depending on the nature of
 your board.

In my early experiments with this stuff I was able to lock up the
PC while doing some of this stuff. Don't be surprised if your's does.

Make that 48 I/O points instead of 56

So here is what I have done.(Recommended by another user)

The pci_8255 showed up in both components and
 functions
but nothing in pins under Hal Configuration. So I commented it out
 and did
 this...
 In the m5i20_io.hal file -
loadrt hal_ax5214h
 cfg=0x220_iiooiioo(Copied
 from demo_mazak)
Now I show 56 I/O points in Hal Configuration and Hal
 Meter under
pins.Does this mean it worked I assume? Do I have to modify
 the driver
to get the remainder of the I/O points in pins? Do I need to go
 ahead and
hook up a switch or led to confirm?

   Thanks,
 Dave

  Dave

If you look in the Integrator's Manual:

 http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/EMC2_Integrator_Manual.pdf

chapter four indicates that the [HAL] section of the .ini file
 for the
configuration you are running, has an entry(ies) called HALFILE =.
These HALFILE ='s will list the .hal files that are part of the
initialization for starting your configuration in EMC2. One of these
files will have loadrt somedriver and_options in it. You will
 need a
loadrt entry for your 8255, plus an entry to add the driver to a
 thread,
something like addf somedriver name_of_thread. You can do a
 Find for
addf in the manual to get more information. If you start EMC2 and
 if the
driver loads properly, you should be able to start Halmeter and
 see the
new Hal pins in the pin list.

 Don't miss this

[Emc-users] minimal install

2008-05-03 Thread Stuart Stevenson
Gentlemen,
I asked a question about Ubuntu, xorg and EMC a few weeks ago. I
think I just found my answer. When EMC was running xorg was using up
to 98% of the CPU. The computer was very slow and jumpy. The DELL
desktop 1 gig processor w/ 512meg ram and the onboard video output
with 4 meg of ram was painfully inadequate to run the latest update of
Ubuntu and EMC. Using 'top' I would watch xorg slowly creep up to
95%-98% of cpu usage. Mouse, keyboard, and touchscreen response would
be horrible.
Today, I put a video card with 128 meg of ram. This helped the
response considerably but the xorg cpu usage hovered around 70%. I put
a card with 256 meg of ram. This helped a tremendous amount. The
mouse, keyboard, touchscreen response is very crisp. The xorg cpu
usage hovers around 12%.
All you need to do is use a bigger hammer. It will finally work.
It seems as if Ubuntu is taking more video resources with every update.
Is there an image of a minimalist install?
thanks
Stuart
