changing the sign of INPUT_SCALE in your INI file, or physically
swapping the A and B wires will change the sign.

[Emc-users] encoder

2008-07-08 Thread Terry
Hi

I have an axis with 50800 counts per inch.

This gives me the proper amount of travel but in the wrong

direction- I am only turning the screw by hand

When I use a negative 50800 it is correct.  Will this cause

me any problems or should I flip the A and B around?

Thanks
Terry

The link is a little long, but the model # is the RCM21, the C
is for commutation.

I see they now also have an RCML15, a smaller encoder also with
commutation, and it sells for $68! Wow!

Yes, the UVW are the commutation signals, and tell a siz-step
drive what polarity to drive on which motor pins. Most newer
motors are designed for sinusoidal drive, but some work fine
with six-step. The ones that don't work so well have vibrations
at about 150 RPM.

Yaskawa uses a proprietary 3-channel scheme, where the C channel
looks just like the A and B channel, but its phase shift from
those channels tells what sextant of the motor's rotation it is
in, thereby giving the commutation info in with the index pulse.

Re: [Emc-users] OT: Perfboard Wire

2008-07-08 Thread Emory Smith
I use some Belden control cable left over from a lighting project.
It's 10 or 12 conductors of 24 ga stranded wire.
It doesn't melt near as bad as Cat 5 or phone wire.
You might check with sound and lighting companies around town
to see if they have any scraps. A 10' piece will last a good while.

AXIS already has an inch/mm display toggle.

To enlarge the font use something like
http://cvs.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/emc2/src/emc/usr_intf/axis/etc/axis_big_dro?rev=1.1
in your X resources. We've talked about some ideas for a better way
to do this (like on a menu) but nobody has done it yet.

[Emc-users] pyVCP and AXIS Position

2008-07-08 Thread Kirk Wallace
I would like to display the axes positions in larger numbers, and
possibly with an inch/mm toggle. I made an X position pyVCP element on
the AXIS display, but it doesn't change with Touch-Off. Can anyone give
my a head-start on how to make my pyVCP position match AXIS' position
display?

My lathe_postgui.hal has:

net Xpos => pyvcp.Xposition

I suppose Xpos is not the proper signal? Or I need to process it with
Touch-Off some how?

Would you happen to have a model number or link for the Renco encoders?
How do ABZ (quadrature with index) differ from UVW? UVW sounds like
some sort of three phase thingy.

No, it will NOT work.
That would make the spindle drive much

Maybe. It depends a lot on the design of the motor windings.
The only way for me to know is to try it. Especially if you
don't need the full RPM of the motor, there should be no
problem. Assuming 250 IPM is good, and a 5 TPI screw, it only
needs 1250 RPM. If it is a 2000 or 3000 RPM motor at the 198 V,
then I think there is no electrical limit.

If you want to pull one of the motors off and send it to me, I
can test it on my drives. First, I have to find out the wiring
setup to make the encoder work, then I can check it for
smoothness. Some motors run quite smoothly with my 6-step drive
scheme, some don't - they buzz a lot at around 150 RPM.
If the encoders are inscrutable proprietary ones that mix the
index and commutation signals like Yaskawa does, then Renco has
some really nice 2.1" encoders with 6 channels (ABZ and UVW for
commutation signals.)

Some VFDs will work with some PM motors, but different control
algorithms are required. If the drive maker didn't specifically include
PM control, it most likely won't work.

If you have AC servo drives already, you _really_ want to search for
docs, etc, before you give up and ebay them. AC servos are much more
complex than DC servos - if you've got drives that are matched to the
motors, use them.
