Re: [Emc-users] Outrunners

2012-02-24 Thread Lars Andersson
While 10 RPM is pretty impressive mechanicalvise, it is only 1700 Hz on
a two-pole motor. A BLDC is similar to a syncronous three phase motor that
was used much for really high power apps in ancient times, maybe even today.
Typical example is a city water supply pump. They had to be brought up to
the right speed before being connected to the supply, they were not self
starting.

You can run a BLDC from a dumb fixed frequency three phase supply if only
you can get it to spin in the first place.

Re: [Emc-users] Outrunners

2012-02-24 Thread Erik Friesen
100K / 60 * 2(poles) = electrical rpms. You'll need to run the pwm well
over 100Khz to do this. The lowly dspic33f mc motor series will struggle to
do this, let alone any additional processing.

I think there is something else though, it seems that a bldc has less
torque from a fixed frequency than a sinusoidal wound 3 phase, but I don't
really understand it completely.

What is the reference to ancient times?

Of course, if you use hall effect sensors it would be easier. Some folks
add hall effect sensors to outrunners, it works fine.

It will probably start from rest, certainly with a soft-starting VFD,
 and will run synchronously.
However, running synchronously the phase lead will depend only on
load, and will be very small. The field will be almost 100% direct and
 zero quadrature.
The effect of this is (I think) that the back-emf is very small, and
the current very high, for a given torque.

[Emc-users] Spindle speed interfaces

2012-02-24 Thread gene heskett
Greetings all;

The spindle controller in a 7x10-12-14 is quite a bit different from the
one in my mill, so my question is:

Can it be controlled by essentially the same controller (in this case a
PMDX-106) as has worked so well on the mill?

And if so, how hard is it in hal, to tie the encoder's output back into the
speed logic in LinuxCNC? In a manner that looks like a constant SFM
control even.

Cheers, Gene

HUH? On a permanent magnet motor, the back EMF is determined entirely by
the magnets, and will be the same with or without driving current. The
BEMF will
be exactly proportional to RPM. That's not the case with an induction
motor, of course.

Re: [Emc-users] Mesa 5i25 with Generic stepper board

2012-02-24 Thread Chris Morley

Here is a hand built XML file for 5i25 with prob_rfx2 firmware.

You need to add the folder '5i25' to /lib/firmware/hm2
then add the XML file to that folder.
You will need administer privileges to do this.

one way is to open a terminal and typesudo nautilus
and then your password.

after that when you run PNCconf you will be able to select
the 5i25 board and the prob_rfx2 firmware.

I'm a bit shaky on how to configure this as I just started studying it last
night, however it appears to me that if I created a prob_rfx2.xml file,
 that I could utilize
pncconf to build my emc2 configuration.

I have the prob_rfx2.pin file that describes all of the pins that the
 firmware defines.

Am I on the right track here? Also are there any references or tips that
anyone is aware of to help me along?

I'm linux savvy and a programmer, so any work that could be reusable I'd
like to share and provide for others that may follow down this path.

I took a look at the firmware you quoted.

Yes if you make an XML file PNCconf will help you configure it.

I'll try to find time to build one this weekend.

sulfuic acid (battery acid) wont eat copper. might make a matte surface on

[Emc-users] Film Emulsion for Encoder Wheels?

I wonder if one could make an encoder wheel with a thin glass disk, coat

Or, use a thin sheet metal disk with photoresist and etch the slots?

I know these techniques are use commercially, I'm just wondering if one
