But with 200 kHz bandwidth, it's really only good for audio.

I think it would be a little more useful than that. It would allow you
to confirm that there really was a quadrature signal on a pair of
wires, and that it was of the right level, or see that the output of a
resolver is behaving correctly.

I am not sure that a scope is particularly useful for spotting noise
spikes anyway, unless you plan on scrolling through huge amounts of
data.

200 kHz obviously goes higher than the typical audio frequencies, but
it's still a pretty limited bandwidth. I'd still look for one that
has a bit higher bandwidth, preferably 10 MHz or more, just because
it'd be more versatile. You could probably pick up a Tek TM502 and an
SC503 10 MHz storage scope plugin relatively cheap. Or go with that
100 MHz scope that was posted earlier.

Depends on the type of noise. If it's constant, it'll probably show
up on every sweep. If it's one of those "happens once in a blue moon"
kind of spikes, then a DSO or other kind of storage scope is the only
way you are going to find it.

[Emc-users] Motion King Motors

2013-01-09 Thread Tim James
I have been reading the emails concerning these motors.

I recommended these motors and we have used about 40 of them without a problem.

We are using them with our own pcb utilising the AMC DZR servo amplifier
modules.

I would agree that your motor cables should be about 1.5 mm sq and be covered
with an overall screen connected to ground at the servo amplifier end.

The motor encoder and hall cables should also have an overall screen connected
to ground at the servo amplifier end.

One problem I did not fully appreciate was the current drawn by the two 26LS31
line driver integrated circuits mounted on the motor pcb and consequently the
volt drop over the cables we were using.

Have you measured the voltage on the pcb in the motor ?

When we experienced peculiar numbers of encoder counts being measured by our
servo amplifier we discovered we had only 4.75 volts at the motor end.

Increasing the supply voltage so that we had 4.9 volts at the motor end cured
the peculiar encoder counts.

[Emc-users] touchscreens

2013-01-09 Thread Stephen Dubovsky
I've read good things about the compatibility of the ELO touchscreen
monitors w/ LinuxCNC and have been researching one for a lathe project.
Only have room for a ~12" monitor in the panel. The 12" ELOs on ebay are
all only 800x600 which Im wondering might make me feel like Im flashing
back to the 80's. Or am I just jaded from using HD android tablets and
such? ;) Surely the buttons and DRO readout will look fine but I've never
used a touch screen w/ any PC. Is there a better(or easier!) solution or
am I overthinking it?

Re: [Emc-users] touchscreens

I think you are over thinking it. You do not want a cluttered screen with
small HD images to try to touch. The bigger the touch area for each button
the easier to touch the correct button.

The Touchy user interface was designed to work equally well at any
screen resolution. You will need to pick your fonts and font sizes
accordingly, and you may have to adjust your screen DPI setting to
make everything fit. But after you do that, it will work perfectly
well.

Before you buy the screen, you can set your normal monitor to that
resolution and try it out, just using your mouse.

AXIS originally worked at 800x600 but I'm not so sure it still does.
But for a touch screen, you want Touchy anyway.

I've gotten really used to the gremlin backplot in Axis, and I now have
a hard time imagining working without it. I imagine I'd want it in a
tab in Touchy, and I imagine I'd want it in fairly high resolution.
This is the one reason I keep waiting for a higher-resolution touch
screen for my mill.

I should try it on a normal screen with the resolution turned down,
that's a good idea, thanks!
