Re: [Emc-users] linux dual boot

2010-03-06 Thread Moses O McKnight
9.10 does use grub2, but the correct answer was given by micges. Use
Synaptic and search for "linux" in Name only (not Name and Description).
Uninstall all but the newest linux-image*** and linux-headers***
packages. You want to leave linux-generic, linux-headers-generic (if
it's installed), and linux-image-generic so it will continue to get
kernel updates. This will also clear up a lot of disk space.

Re: [Emc-users] experimental packages of the git master branch are available

2010-01-29 Thread Moses O McKnight
Actually, these packages probably will install over the top of the
current emc2 as far as I know. I think you can only get "stand-alone"
or "run-in-place" if you compile emc yourself. These new packages are
for those who want to try the latest changes without having to compile
it themselves.

What about rs232? Maybe you can use a userspace hal component to read

You can create a launcher for it. Right click on the desktop, select
"Create Launcher" Then for the command put in "gksu gedit"

This will prompt you for your password just like synaptic and other
programs do and will give you root privileges.

If you're going to recommend a command-line text editor to a newbie, I
would recommend nano over vi/vim any day! At least with nano you can
easily figure out how to type a few changes and exit, but with vi/vim
you have to learn how to think upside down with rags stuffed up your
nose, and then you have to memorize 100 commands! Every time I
accidentally run vim I have to figure out how to open the tutorial so I
can figure out how to exit the thing without killing the terminal. Then
I forget the commands before I run it next time :-) Enough of that rant
though...

The easiest editor for most people will probably just be gedit aka "Text
Editor" in the Accessories menu.

Re: [Emc-users] SheetCam TNG V0.0.24 for Linux released

2008-06-18 Thread Moses O McKnight
Hi Les,

The Ubuntu wx libs are indeed out of date. I get my packages from
http://apt.wxwidgets.org/

The line I use for Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 is:

deb http://apt.wxwidgets.org/ gutsy-wx main

These are the latest wx libs and the ones for 7.10 work fine on 8.04.
They also have versions for different distributions of debian and
ubuntu. You might be able to instruct the user to add the appropriate
line to their software sources, or you may be able to write a small
script to detect the distribution and add the correct line to the
etc/apt/sources.list automatically.

Check out this page for more information:

Re: [Emc-users] SheetCam TNG for Linux released

I would second Ray on .deb files. Another thing to consider is that
since EMC2 is primarily supported on Ubuntu, and I would guess EMC2
users would be your main linux customers, it might may the most sense to
primarily target the same platform. A plus is that the ubuntu .deb
should install fine on Debian, and with Alien you can convert to .rpm -
although I don't know how well that works. I've successfully converted
many .rpm packages to .deb with it though.
Just my .002 cents.
