The reason that you don't get the different line weights in drawings that
you used to is because of inkjet printers being used to output the hard copies.
As far as I am aware most standards have been changed to accommodate this.

Tolerancing is just as critical in CAD as it was on a drawing board, I work
as a CNC machinist using designs provided and also as a designer for our
own products. I have yet to receive a properly toleranced design from a
third party.

In my opinion the reason for a lot of the problems that we now experience
in manufacturing is because of the training given to engineers/designers,
they get to touch on a few aspects of manufacturing and then think that they
are experts in the field. It does not help that tooling out of China is so
cheap that no one bothers to optimise the tooling to cut down on cost.

[Emc-users] (no subject)

2008-10-18 Thread neil_macintosh
Thank you for the help that was given when requested.

Got the lathe at work up and running on Friday afternoon, found that I had
been misreading the stepconfig. Tried a program that I had programmed via
mastercam, ran for about 30 minutes and when I returned to X0 Z0 at the end
I was out by .02 of a mm in both axes. When I machined a sphere the finish
was exceptionally good and this comes from someone who programs high speed
machining centers for a living, previously we were getting bad facetting
whenever we cut anything other than straight X or Z moves and even then the
machine would stall. Currently I have managed to take a 1.5mm deep cut in
brass, not in the class of servo driven commercial machine but more than
adequate for our purposes. I thought this was not to bad as I have not yet
done any real fine tuning. I will try and make a video when I cut something
interesting and post it on the net.

The next step will be to get the threading working and then after that a
C-Axis with live tooling. Does anyone have any ideas on engaging and
disengaging
the C-Axis, I was thinking of something along the lines of a split spindle
with a disc brake to connect the C-Axis. Also any ideas what motor to use
to drive the live tooling.

I am still trying to find other EMC users in Sydney Australia or its surrounds.

[Emc-users] Step Config

2008-09-26 Thread neil_macintosh
Good Morning All
I am currently replacing the original electronics on our lathe at work with
electronics driven by EMC2. I am experiencing a problem with step config.
When I use step config initially it works but as I go backwards and forwards
between pages it stops working as in the motor no longer steps.

Is it possible to just edit an existing configuration in text editor and
bypass the step config. I have been testing the Z axis on the lathe for
depth of cut etc simply by using the stepper mill and adjusting the feed
rate percentage. I am not really that concerned about the amount of time
taken to accomplish the configuration as I feel every hour I spend now will
have benefits in the future.

[Emc-users] Pin out for Wabeco lathe

2008-09-10 Thread neil_macintosh
Hi all
I am trying to convert a Wabeco CNC lathe from PC Dreh the DOS based German
package that it was supplied with to EMC2.

I am having problems with the pinout to the controller, has anyone attempted
this before?

I am concerned that the controller will only work if I use PC Dreh and the
dongle that came with it.

I have used the PC and EMC2 to drive a stepper using a driver board that
I made myself.
