Re: [Emc-users] DNC Mode

2007-02-12 Thread Ray Henry

Hi Lie

I'd be willing to bet that you only need one seat of PowerMill. If the
project were mine to do, I'd put low-cost older or new but "slow"
computers to work doing the motion for each router. EMC2 can easily
handle a stepper driven router.

In theory it should be possible to run more than one router with a
single computer as long as the motion for each router is identical. It
would be much more difficult to run three instances of EMC2 on a single
PC.

I know of several installations where the individual motion computers
run headless. They are controlled from a central computer that displays
the GUI's for each. In this arrangement the motion computers do not
even have to run any windowing system.

Since the g-code file size is not a issue, I've run g-code files that
are many meg in size, the computer running PowerMill can send files as
they are completed to each router. As long as EMC2's interpreter has
access to the file it will be happy when you press run.

Re: DNC Mode
Thank you for the reply.
We have 3 units of small CNC router required 3 pc for controlling each machine
(PowerMill and MACH3 installed in each pc).
I am thinking of reducing investment in our next project.
Is it possible to use only one pc (with EMC2.1.0) to control and download of
G-Code.

That reminds me Ray, not exactly related but close:

I'm planning to take my paper tape punch/reader to CNC Workshop in
June to read some tapes for Mac.

If anyone else needs some tapes read and put on modern media (USB
stick, floppy, email, ...) I'd be happy to do it.

Assuming it still works.

I'm wondering if Lie Seng Thok wants to use EMC2 to drip feed an older
mill control or if he has an old drip feed editor with programs that
he'd like to run on an EMC2 controlled machine.

Because EMC2 runs on a fully functional computer, you can use
networking, USB sticks, and many other ways to get the GCode to the
controller. For a better answer you will have to be much more
specific about what you want to do.
