Not really going backwards if your hardware is up-to date

If you use old hardware, old kernels are often better, if you use new hardware
very good performance is possible with new MBs and new kernels:

Heres a current MB running Preempt-RT (RTAI is even better, in the 5 usec
region)

it sounds familiar, I have seen this before.
A google search on "ubuntu 10.04 black screen" turns up a

Ubuntu 10.04 had one major area of problems, and that was
graphics drivers. Very generic devices worked OK, but all
sorts of slightly unusual graphics cards caused headaches.
If you do a bit of googling on Ubuntu 10.04 and the GeForce
card, you will likely find lots of moaning, and a few tricks
that somebody used to make it work. Usually adding
something the the grub boot line to alter the graphical mode
the system starts up in.

First, hold down the shift key as soon as the machine starts
booting. This will get you into the grub command line.
Then, from your google searching, hopefully you have a video
mode number to add to the command line. The e key lets you
edit the boot command line, to add additional parameters to it.

[Emc-users] trying to get out of the freezer

2015-08-30 Thread Michael Dark
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,
I could sure use some help getting out of the freezer here.
I've been running emc2.4.6 on ubuntu 8.04 no worries since, well a long
time...

But as my OS is frozen, and I'm still alive, I think, and I'd like to move
forward...
Having display problem with NV10 GEFORCE 256 SDR

So I zsync Mr. Radek live 2.6 debian wheezy and burned to dvd and booting...
First Live option gives video state undefined, ie blue BSOD...
Second Live option fail safe, video works fine.
So I decide if fail safe works then I'll install the OS and tweak it L8ter,
right?

Well I did the graphical OS install, which had perfect graphics BTW.
And let it install grub to my first HD...

I know my way around the shop ok, but please someone, how can an OS install
itself graphically and then boot to a graphically undefined state?
cntrl-alt-f1 etc nada cntrl-alt-f7 nada

Ah maybe, too old, too old LOL
Thanks for any and all pointers

Best Regards,
mic
