Re: Reminder | GNOME Engagement Meeting Tuesday, May 29th (and my regrets)

2018-05-29 Thread Benjamin Berg
Hi,

GUADEC is coming closer, and work has picked up again. There are a few
things that we need to announce (some of it will also be announced via
personal blogs AFAIK).

From the top of my head:
 * People need to book accommodation, there is a wiki page to
   coordinate room sharing
   https://wiki.gnome.org/GUADEC/2018/Accommodation
 * A rough schedule is almost there
   https://2018.guadec.org/pages/schedule.html
 * Registration will open later this week

It is all CC-BY-SA 3.0. But that is incompatible with CC-BY 3.0 which
youtube uses, so I am not going to mark them as CC (it is obvious from
the videos as it is shown at the start of each).

Anyway, all 19 videos are now on the GUADEC channel. I tried to put in
the correct date where available, but couldn't find it for two of the
talks.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkmRdYgttscGHGmHn0M4U3rRA7q-nQ2OU

I did double check that the title/description is all there, so I think
everything should be good.

Main thing missing are the two videos that you still have.

Thanks for finding the mail. It does look like some or all of the
videos have a license rendered into them. So I guess I'll have a look
at each and see if that is consistent.

Seems like they got lost and nobody knows what happened :-/

Aiden, do you still have any of the original files?

Hi,

People with access right now are Alberto and myself, as far as I know.

I am uploading them again right now. Will need some time to copy all
the metadata so please keep them available for now.

Do you remember the license so that they can be correctly tagged? Or
should they remain non-free/"Standard Youtube License"?

Pinged on #sysadmin, lets see if someone knows what happens.

What is the simplest solution? The easiest might be if I give you the
password for the guadec youtube account. Or I can upload them if you
make them available to me somewhere.

Too bad, that might have been useful.

Re: GUADEC 2016 pictures

2016-08-22 Thread Benjamin Berg
Hey,

I forgot to say this earlier (hat planned to mention it during the
opening).

In German law people have a right to their own picture. This means
that–unless certain conditions are met–it is not legal to publish the
picture of any person without their consent (distribute or show
publicly). Note that this can only be persecuted if the person in
question files a complaint. In the worst case it can be punished with
up to one year in prison or a corresponding fine.

As I understand it, things like the group photo are not an issue (one,
it is a gathering, two it is something historic, three it is common
knowledge that it is used for publication). Also publishing a picture
of a speaker while speaking or people surrounding the GNOME birthday
cake should be entirely fine.

But if you happened to make random photos of attendees or someone in
the city then making these photos available to the public is likely
*not* permitted by German law (as far as I know it is generally legal
to make them and show them to people in private).

In practice most people do not seem to really care about it. However, I
do think that it is generally a good idea to ask people for their
consent before circulating a picture.

Anyway, I am not a lawyer …

Benjamin

PS: Trying to translate the main section about it from the law, the
following exceptions apply:

 * images that show contemporary history (Zeitgeschehen)
 * person is not relevant for the picture (e.g. photographing a
building and someone happens to stand around in front)
 * images of marches, gatherings, and similar happenings ("ähnliche
Vorgänge") if the person was part of them
 * if the image is not commissioned and it is a piece of art

Which again has the exception that a persons "rightful concern" (or
"interest"?) must not be violated (I am not sure how to translate it,
but I think that a pretty obvious case is if the photo is humiliating
for some reason).

There are also other sections of the law which are relevant. In the end
it seems to be a pretty complicated assessment by the courts after
someone has actually filed a complaint.

We could also manually print another badge for some people. We also
have a 25mm button machine available which we could use for this
purpose.

I had quite a lot of contact with him when I first joined the community
(back in 2005) where I started to help him with art.gnome.org and gtk-
