Werner Koch has explicitly said in the past that he considers C&P into passphrase fields to be a disastrous mistake. It may be that the most recent GPG4WIN deliberately disabled that functionality. Either way, this isn't an Enigmail bug. ___ enigmail-users mailing list enigmail-users@enigmail.net To unsubscribe or make changes to your subscription click here: https://admin.hostpoint.ch/mailman/listinfo/enigmail-users_enigmail.net
[Enigmail] Copy-paste deactivated in Gpg4win 2.2.2
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 When trying to create a user on the page sourceforge.net/user/registration I get the message "System Error [F37236]". Not even Google knows what that means, so now I'll try this mailing list instead. Something changed with the recent release of Gpg4win 2.2.2 and its corresponding Enigmail 1.7.2. Perhaps it should get fixed in Enigmail or perhaps it should get fixed in Gpg4win. I'd like to hear your opinion! To reproduce: Use Windows Vista, 7 or 8. Install Mozilla Thunderbird. Add Enigmail. Run the Setup Wizard. Choose a strong password and use a password manager so you can copy and paste the password. Continue the setup, and when you are saving your revocation certificate, you are asked to retype your password. Try to paste in your password. It's impossible! You could do that in Gpg4win 2.2.1 and prior versions, but no more. You can copy and paste when you choose your say 50 character completely random password, but as soon as you need to use it, you need to type it manually. Doing so with a really strong password is EXTREMELY difficult and time consuming! So password managers can no longer be used. And as a consequence, users are forces to chose passwords that are weak enough that they can remember them and type they in manually. This weakens the protection provided by the password. What do you think? Is this a bug or has it for some reason been done deliberately? Can the issue be address in Enigmail or in Gpg4win? - -- Kind regards Anders www.PrivacyDefence.org Public key: www.privacydefence.org/?page_id=69 -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v2.0.22 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJUE0kqAAoJEKfAPQIYEF1i7j0P/1YEfuCkK03tK5YKW/mEX8u2 lqULddLxozkNFznzpD56Up2DsIU216e8NhIDJLpxD4M0i9IWJgAEWlc7R0J+fYXq Xy6x9zAx8sxQQL7OFTNGo0MrE9u3GBtdWIHRbpkuFOnNo8vABIJKpOPoXZQAdHap yA26BZLMWm+eHqGN461aPGOTBAJCGPK8lAp9aswW7f7+Pfn+QG120Yiytcs6Ehg8 5R6W70/Dn+3HIKEb9eP31EczydIP5PJms4cQM4VQ4ZQlosrbb75BptkwvCrUAoJu o0hQoLCZPyGpfOaqFZC+gcD+IwjNvc+IdvmIuj+8YexLphG4EII01okfoT/c5khz nS+BDFz0ZLtVvvdxzqkBljBUYP0gZqFFLQ/4uBcTyHJFL/NKhMSIqtvCoie1Qucc SXZLClpBARZ0ChsePKRe6Zq3tgLvGaQA+AeutAjb+7HWKSWMymwyD77GQz6dJ3sN 39sdj++dGi7gn+uFglsnadwoFz+Debw8z9YSbP83lDdKDzdeoH9Qmh5DlKXeHvJ0 jvn2WV5MV1Z0IxBgJ0YcxI5kCIYTOy60fNyh598/rxYGSGeUUigiBtUG4vB+UWvQ UcBr8N4NXq9RurDLmebd7TU467FpDPaYGuXqYBBKDLVxQZLN9vyLSw+QvCJ8sI6p N0wdeGZyFgKU2gxuRm7U =bo3D -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ enigmail-users mailing list enigmail-users@enigmail.net To unsubscribe or make changes to your subscription click here: https://admin.hostpoint.ch/mailman/listinfo/enigmail-users_enigmail.net

There are basically two possibilities: 1. Edit your gpg.conf file. Add a line like: default-key This only works if you have only one key. Otherwise maybe default-recipient-self is an option, but I didn't test it together with Enigmail. 2. Edit the prefs.js file in your Thunderbird profile directory and add the line (at best after the existing enigmail settings): user_pref("extensions.enigmail.encryptToSelf", true); Close Thunderbird beforehand! And, als always, keep a backup! I would consider the first option a bit safer, as messing up your prefs.js is usually only detected when it's too late, if you have no backup. This is because Thunderbird rewrites the prefs.js upon program close. [Enigmail] compiling enigmail with thunderbird?
Thanks to all those that responded to my question. I appreciate your help and have decided to follow the advice given by Patrick since it's probably the easiest option for many of my "not too technical" users. I wouldn't say the behavior is ideal, but knowing how Thunderbird works, it's what I'd expect. When you expand the headers, Thunderbird re-loads the message. That's like de-selecting the message and re-selecting it. The message will be shown in its original form with no verification applied. Why is it different for encrypted messages? I assume because those are PGP/MIME messages, while the others are inline-PGP? - -Patrick -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG/MacGPG2 v2.0.22 (Darwin) iQEVAwUBVBMdbck25cDiHiw+AQiidQf/ei0OaeBSeMm0Ic+mmfo0kaT1RRs8mn+c tvZrnmQ0cJ5QeQPjI/0ZZ8vO23saQrcFKoQkwAJpjMqhFLG7fpPSMbO+XYavNzic 7fl2gmLafLuD61w5nAmokg62KKPoraEPlWk2CH9AJwOGvBWPEfpHrat7J+PisYZT 4W5LxmIHgivM03dnKnIweX5K5cRXOTkUTJun7kIf5U+GS5sOWj5o27g+t8JK66/T ONy3KLF4EGB1br9H5WBaYqwPBssOy+XPJAXevgdKHb1PJRmcyxegxh3uHU5DjHlv 3Z8W7VOASkFz1QMbjzFaDlP1g05z6yeIgbP7XilTUWyyR31hY+wBXg== =S4c2 -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ enigmail-users mailing list enigmail-users@enigmail.net To unsubscribe or make changes to your subscription click here: https://admin.hostpoint.ch/mailman/listinfo/enigmail-users_enigmail.net
[Enigmail] expanding Thunderbird's header causes enigmail's verification to be canceled
T'bird 31.0, enigmail 1.7.2, ubuntustudio 1404 : I don't have the 'automatically decrypt / verify messages' option set - my choice. When I see the mention [Enigmail] appear in the Thunderbird header together with the PGP Signature ascii text below the message, I click the 'Decrypt' button and enigmail does its stuff. The enigmail coloured header is displayed about the quality of the signature. If I then expand the Thunderbird header (as I tend to do nowadays to check for the presence of an OpenPGP header), the enigmail verification header disappears and the PGP Signature ascii text reappears below the message. I have to click the Decrypt button a second time if I want to check anything in the enigmail info. Is this considered normal behaviour ? It does not happen in the case of an encrypted message - once decrypted it stays decrypted despite any activity with the thunderbird header. [Enigmail] Not encrypting sent messages with own key
