Do you see any exception in the Thunderbird Error Console? If not,
could you please retry and send me a debug log file?

You're right, Patrick.  The 'difficult' messages were encrypted to a subkey not
present on the smartcard.

I have removed the 'difficult' messages from the Inbox folder and rerun the
'create decrypted copy (Enigmail)' filter on the whole Inbox folder.  The result
is that a Thunderbird process stays running when Thunderbird is exited.

This happens systematically each time I repeat the run filter on folder
operation.  Running the filter seems to be the only condition necessary to cause
the Thunderbird process to hang.
