 = EFL 1.8 is Out =

We are pleased to announce that **EFL** and **Elementary** 1.8 are now out and
available for download. Also **Emotion Generic Players** and **Evas Generic
 Loaders** are available too.

Is that possible to maintain in git tree separate branch for efl-18 ?
to pick up changes for stable release and package it for distros?

Do you have a process for tagging/branching the git trees during the release
cycle
so automated systems can target those easily with git?

It'd be nice to be able to look at the git history and be able to determine
what commit
a particular release [candidate] came from.

Great job!

So.. when do we have a string freeze? This is important to translators, or
they will waste their time.

Thanks.

There are two public structures that I am not sure yet,
Ecore_Wl_Global and Ecore_Wl_Output. The latter one I think that
should be hidden too, definitely, but I can't do it right now (timeout
for me) and won't be able to do anything on the weekend, but I can do
it on Monday morning if you guys open a small exception for this
 specific case :D

I really don't know about Ecore_Wl_Global yet, it might need to be
exposed for things like the testings being done by uartie.

I just need access to the available global interfaces for wayland-fits
so I can bind to a custom interface... feel free to change the semantics
as needed and we'll just adjust wayland-fits to follow.

Anyway, in both cases they should be quite easy to be moved to
ecore_wl_private.h, as they are way smaller and less used than the
 other ones already in there.

 Great new!
Just to let you know tough: I’m trying to package efl (with default
configuration) for Mac OS’ Homebrew package manager. So far no patches are
 necessary for efl.

Yeah, amazing news, indeed!

I'm gonna work on the Ecore_Wayland.h private structure, starting from Monday!

I’ll update the status, once I’ve done it successfully.

[E-devel] EFL 1.8 coming release

2013-10-25 Thread Cedric BAIL
Hello everyone,

EFL and Elementary 1.8 have there todo list almost done by now. I
think we are good to start the release process. So if nobody object by
end of next week, on Sunday 3rd, we will enter on code freeze. As
usual, only bug fixes, test code and limited API fix are allowed.

Right now I am only aware of one major change that need to be done,
fixing Ecore_Wayland.h exposing private structure. So if you have
anything important, please share it here. I will go over phab and take
of what I can.

Time to finally roll 1.8 out !

Just to let you know tough: I’m trying to package efl (with default

I’ll update the status, once I’ve done it successfully.

[E-devel] EFL 1.8 + Valgrind

2013-10-03 Thread Michael Blumenkrantz
If anyone has recently tried to valgrind a graphical EFL app, they've
probably noticed the thousands of lines of backtraces from possibly lost
blocks, none of which were present in 1.7.

Are these blocks actually lost, or can they be ignored? If they can/should
be ignored (which is annoying), shouldn't we ship a valgrind suppression
file for them?

currently we find ourselves basically with no one able to work on efl's 1.8
release. so that's why it's delayed. as such 1.8 will thus be delayed until

I think we are a bit late on the schedule for that. It would have been
good to use composite more so that all our file_set come from the same
class for example. There is no way we can do that it time. So I do
plan to mark Eo API as experimental and not to be used outside of our
own library and example for the moment.

Perfect, that's what I want.

I would say the ridiculous amount of bugs on Elementary:

http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/query?status=assignedstatus=newstatus=reopenedcomponent=elementaryorder=prioritycol=idcol=summarycol=componentcol=statuscol=typecol=prioritycol=milestonereport=21

Several of those are on gengrid or genlist, which are probably some of
the most used widgets, and thus should work correctly.

Anything missing in that list ?

Some of the stuff I am postponing for during the bug freeze period :
 - event bug with clipped object when an evas_map is applied on them
 - optimize rendering path of evas_map to avoid generating to big
surface when not necessary (lead to rendering failure)
 - more memory reduction for 64bits system
 - test examples and make sure they work
 - eio crash
 - alignment issue with edje group item

 Anything missing here to ?

In general I would also have liked to see a tentative build on various
distribution (with a run of make lcov-check) and a test of your
preferred released application that worked well with 1.7 and should
just work as fine with 1.8. So please share your report and open task
on phab when things go wrong.

 Thanks for your help,

I will take a look at the doxygen doc this weekend, but since the
rendering can be different with the doxygen version, which version of
doxygen is the reference? (or which one is use for the website)

 - review ephysics in edje (would like to have more example and some

 - doxygen css should match our website

 - mapbuf detecting the complexity of child object and turning itself
 off in auto mode

Anything missing in that list ?

I would say the ridiculous amount of bugs on Elementary:

 http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/query?status=assignedstatus=newstatus=reopenedcomponent=elementaryorder=prioritycol=idcol=summarycol=componentcol=statuscol=typecol=prioritycol=milestonereport=21

Several of those are on gengrid or genlist, which are probably some of
the most used widgets, and thus should work correctly.

I would have put that on the bug list that need to be solved before
release, not alpha. I am more concerned about our API/ABI stability
and the feature to be in for alpha. As for bugs, yes, they should be
killed for the release, but that we have one more month with nothing
else than bug fixing to do.

I would like to review / add some physics stuff on Edje.
Anyway one month is enough for me.
Btw, does anybody reviewed it ?

It is planned since a long time. Sadly I postponed it... Well, do you
have more edje examples ? I have some idea that I could try, like
adding alternate scheme for switching between terminology terminal as
a way to do this review. That or some Enlightenment wallpaper.

Regarding the one month feature freeze, it's a great idea.
It should be time enough to drastically reduce bugs.

I'm not sure since I'm not working with Elementary trunk, but some
other devs have reported it's been very instable these weeks. Is
anybody in charge to assure Elm quality ? Is this timeframe enough to
 stabilize it ?

I hope someone somewhere close to London can roll in Exactness
infrastructure and start building test on it. That should help.

Yes Exactness is a good start. And I also will start running it. It's
been years since I didn't test it.
But quality also should be measured by human. I happily want to
volunteer for the elm quality manage.
Please assign me if anyone issues a task or ticket on phab.
Anyone else can join :)

Would be great to have a list of issues / features to be implemented

Should be put on phab I guess.

I agree, and I do that when I'm developing EFL. Actually I always did

[E-devel] EFL 1.8 memory

2013-03-14 Thread Cedric BAIL
Hello every one,

As some people may have noted I have been looking at memory issue for
a month or so. We are now almost back to where we were with 1.7 with
more feature. I am looking forward to Eo static array callbacks to
push that down even more and maybe be bellow 1.7. Except that, there
is still some small improvements that can be done, but the massive one
have been rolled in already.

You can read more there :
https://phab.enlightenment.org/phame/live/1/post/efl_memory_consumption_moo/

I would like to emphasis to developer to continuously care about
memory usage and use all the infra we have now to never grow that much
again !

Have fun,

That's a good write up. You forgot two other reasons for reducing
memory consumption. Leaves more room for other things. You know, like
EFL based apps, non EFL based apps, the OS, etc. Plus some of us work
with memory constrained embedded devices.

EFL based apps, non EFL based apps, the OS, etc. Plus some of us work
  with memory constrained embedded devices.

 Isn't that obvious ? :-)

i thought we optimize in order to floss our teeth better? :)

It's only obvious to people like you, me, and other EFL coders. Plenty
of programmers around the world don't care about memory usage, even when
they should.

Only if we can optimize the EFL memory footprint enough to run on your
average teeth flossing tool. B-)
