Actually that was fixed the other day by raster, so on your next update
it should work for you.

Ok, I just checked it. It does work. But only when the shelf is _not_

1. dnd to ibar does work. i just did so dragging a firefox icon into ibar from
the border.
2. a lot of people don't KNOW you can do it - so adding a menu to the border
menu saying "add to..." is a helpful ui feature to make it easier when people
ask "how do i add app X to my ibar?". it simply tries to make another way of
doing it obvious. dnd is NOT obvious. it is implicit and handy.

Well, space should not be an issue anymore as I recently refactored the

You should be able to drag icons to ibar from damn near anywhere now.
Applications menu, window borders, EFM, applications config dialog.

Dragging icons directly to ibar is still supported/working.

As far as this menu item being "pointless" and "won't be used at
all"...how do you know that? Some people may use it more than others but
this doesn't mean that it will never get used.

that makes things harder as some parts of menus are dynamically created and
generated by code. they are not just static things. maybe in e18 we will look
at providing more flexibility there. but history has taught me that 99% of
people never change such a thing - even if it is configurable, so we should
focus on making the default really good and smart - and then later when we have
not so many pressing things to do with e, come back and look at making the menu
more flexible.

Why not allowing the user to decide where to place some elements of
the menu ? If it cannot be done now, then maybe for next releases ?

I know users won't modify their shelves very often. But this might
rise another question underlying this one: do any users would like
to have the same menu, or best do the current menu organisation will
satisfy all users ? So I would suggest a menu configurator.

yup - things like lost windows needs to go and get hidden into some advanced

aye. the idea of it was to make it obvious and easily seen - after a few
questions of "i deleted my shelf - how do i add one back?" i thought it might
be good to add a more easily found menu item somewhere for that. they didn't
connect the idea that the shelves config dialog might do it (or that it even
exists)

yep, you´re right i can´t remember that i´ve chosen desktops from the
main menu, nut i don´t know a different category to put it in. one
good point to put the shelves item into config is that it is for
configuring shelves.

hm, it´s the same nesting level as to choose an application from a
category. i don´t think that this is too hard to get to there for most
people.

But how do you determine seldom used ? Me for instance, I never use the
Desktops menu item (for switching)...does that mean it's seldom used and
should be removed? Not necessarily because others may use it.

IMHO, nested too deep and a pita to get to. Would be just as easy to
launch config panel and goto shelves.

hmm both are good. but the lft ends up cluttering the main menu up more. i
think we want both - but the "Shelves" submenu needs to maybe go into another
submenu. we need to reshuffle i think. the Desktops menu is a little
"underused" i think with edge flip, a pager and keybindings - it is a little
redundant. i'm not saying get rid of it, but maybe Dektops (rename to Desktop)
can now hold a shelves submenu then put the current desktops submenu contents
in a "Virtual" submenu of "Desktops" and move show./hide up to the Desktop
menu. also might add a "Configure" menu item to the menu with "Desktop 1" etc.
etc. etc. in (the named desktops). which reminds me... we need a gui to
configure desktop names... in the virtual desktop config (and display them too)

main->Fav
  Applications
  Run
  -
  Desktop -> Virtual -> Desktop 1
 Shelves -> ...
 -
 Show/Hide All...
  ...

i would go with the second one, as i don´t like to many too many items
in the main menu, especially when they are seldom used, for aesthetical
and practical reasons.

just a quick idea, what about having it like this?

config -> shelves -> configure shelves (the old dialog)
 shelf 1
shelf 2 (for fast selection, if
   one wants to change
only one shelf)

i think lost windows could also be removed as one
gets these windows also with 'cleanup windows', ok that is probaly not
so obvious.. hm, and 'about this theme' could went to the theme
selector =)

Hannes

[E-devel] "add shelf" to the main menu

2006-10-15 Thread Christopher Michael
I created 2 different versions for this:

http://devilhorns.us/images/shelf_menu.png

Version 1 has the shelves listed as a sub-menu. Clicking on an
individual shelf will take you to the config dialog for that shelf.
Clicking "Add a shelf" will add a new shelf, and clicking "Delete a
shelf" will take you to the shelf list dialog, where you can select
which one to delete.

Version 2 is just a quick link to the Shelf Configuration list, where
you can add/delete/configure shelves.

Which do we want to go with?

Cheers,
devilhorns
